Hi guys.
This is my third guide, a VERY useful one.
The most important thing in this guide is that you are going to save up MUCH money.
Lets compare.
Usual Set up:
. Serato sound card -----> 500/600 euro or dollars
. CD players -----> need it in the other set up too
. Mixer -------> need it in the other set up too
. Mac Laptop -------> 1500 euro and more
This set up:
. The sound card in your computer ------> 0 euro
. Cd players
. mixer
. Any computer.. no USB or Firewire needed, just a PC that can run properly VDJ
So we have saved up like 2000 euro, and the most important thing, we can try it without spending money.
Step #1: Timecoded CD or vinyl.
- First you need a Timecoded CD or vinyl. The vinyl can be purchased in some shops (dunno where) or via internet. The CD can be burned at home w/ an special mp3.
The timecoded source must be special for VDJ.
note: You can pm me and i will send you the timecoded MP3 for VDJ.
Step #2: ASIO drivers.
- Serato and other soundcards have asio drivers, but here we need the drivers for our normal soundcard.
Can download it in: www.asio4all.com (http://www.trancefix.nl/www.asio4all.com)
You ll also download in the .rar a .pdf that shows how to configure the drivers properly.
Step #3: Setting up VDJ.

Inputs:
Single timecode: you will control just 1 deck in VDJ.
Timecodes: You will control the 2 decks in VDJ (two different soundcards are needed - but a normal soundcard is very, i mean VERY, cheap-)
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/5707/outputtl5.jpg
Outputs:
We ll select external mixer to use all our external gear (CD players and mixer)
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7374/asiodriveriq6.jpg
Sound Card(s):
Select Asio driver (this is used for Serato, Asio4all -this method- and other special sound cards).
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1518/finalgw4.jpg
Finally:
Asio4all should appear when you selected asio driver. If it doesnt appear you have to reinstall the asio4all drivers.
output channels: you could read the other guide if you are not sure how to configure it and what means..
Step #4: Connecting them all!
- Connect your CD decks with a mini plug-->RCA wire to your soundcard line in.
(if you are going to connect two cd decks you need -read above- two soundcards. you cant connect two "ins" to the same soundcard. Maybe you can steal a soundcard from an old pc, or buy a normal PCI one.. about 10 euro??)
- Then introduce your timecoded CD in your cd player(s) and check if the soundcard detects the timecoded audio (read asio4all instructions - is pretty simple).
- connect the "outputs" to ch 1 and ch 2 of your mixer.
- connect the mixer to the amps (obviously dont you think?)
INFO: what happens when you mix?
- your cd players will send an special sound to your pc (to VDJ) and the soundcard will reencode it. VDJ will know when you use pitch bend, change the pitch range, press play an pause. VDJ also knows in which part of the track you are located. VDJ dont know when you hit the CUE button, it thinks that you have pressed pause button (coz the signal has been paused). However, when you hit play again VDJ realises that you're in the beginning of the track.
note: all the things you made (not in the mixer, just in the cd player) have a little delay (some mili secs), but you can correct it with the bend. if you want ZERO delay, you need a serato or final scratch.
- then you ll load an mp3 from your hdd to the virtual dj and youll be able to control it w/ your cd players. So you dont have to record cds and that stuff, just store mp3 on your hdd and search and play them easily (and externally!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and thats all!
hope it helps!! try it out, is very funny and enought cheap to do at home!
PS: if you want to scratch or do some fast movements in your cd players or turntable you cant use this guide, coz the delay will spoil the mix. but this guide is excellent to mix electronic music (slow movements and no scratch)
Again? lol i dunno why im asking it again :D
