Why do producers use a drum roll instead of just bringing the beat in with a small effect? I actually feel like that rolling drum is damn annoying. In for example Cape Town - Metaphorique (Ferry Tayle's Neverending Story Mix) it sucks and screws up the end of the breakdown.

Its true the are a cliche but sometimes they are needed to fill in the gap, if you just dropped in the beat it would sound empty. I try not to use them as much myself, i prefer to mess with drum hits or use the kick drums as a roll.

A drumroll may sound annoying... But if its not there you really miss something if you ask me.. Its also a way of creating a sort of feeling like there is something coming. I use the drumroll almost in every song I produce but most of the times I combine it with some other effects!

Yeah I agree. I think it just has to be there.

Well in some songs like Fly Away (Cosmic Gate Remix) it's done ok and not annoying, and it's pretty short, so it's fine with me. But that song has very powerful elements, so a drum roll is more in place there, same thing goes for Rush Hour, etc. But in easygoing songs like Cape Town - Metaphorique (Ferry Tayle's Neverending Story Mix) of my first example, it's just annoying, especially because it's built up out of full-on beats.
Drum Roll is the key to up to trance, but sometimes its annoying, like long enough stupid drum rools. But it depents on what music or bpms. I use it everytime but its short, not long. its crap.

it creates tension and build up...really long drum rolls can be annoying but short and simple drum rolls can be very effective to build up tension for dramatic effect...
do you mean snare-roll, or kickdrum-roll, or just both in general.
