I've noticed that quite a few of the big name trance DJs wear ear plugs when DJing. A good idea, but wonder how they can judge tone levels (treble/bass levels), unless the earphones reduce sound volume by the same amount for all frequencies. Anyone know?

There are special ear plugs for artists & DJ's. Those are made like that you can protect your ears eventhough you're a big room DJ.
The pro's of these are: more accurate, and less hearing damage due to very good isolation, so lower volumes are needed. The only downside I can imagine is that you have to take more time to take them on/off your ears than a headphone, and when accidentally the gain is very high you damage your ears more due to the signal coming from nearby your eardrums. Custom earbuds are the most advisable ones, I heard Sleek Audio Custom earbuds are very good.

they do lower the whole level by their stated amount i.e. 20dB but mostly you'll lose the high mid to high frequencies more. this said I have a pair of the normal ear plugs £15 worth and its still the same experience, nothing lost. I imagine those specially designed/fitted ear plugs do the same thing and only wish i could splash out on a pair that could handle headphones on top of them!

Where did you get from that they attenuate the mid-highs? If you have proper earplugs they evenly block sound across the whole spectrum (like mine, custom made, specially for musicians, and I must say I am pretty impressed by them). (they cost a bit, but how much are your ears worth ( especially if you are a DJ)?

Isn't the best thing to get pro DJ headphones ? ive got Koss headphones with great sound, why earplugs, ? well, you have to buy what you want for yourself, but after my experience, headphones are the best . Cheers
If you read it is about protective earplugs, which you put in your ear and a HP over.

well yes, i didn't mean that it only covers part of the frequency spectrum, but its what you notice more, when you consider that some of the low end frequencies are actually felt more than heard, therefore you notice less of a loss in the respect and perhaps more for the other end.

I think that the custom-made earplugs that top DJs use affect very little the frequency spectrum and the result is a volume reduction of all frequencies, only trouble is that these things are very expensive. :(
Nevertheless, there are universal earplugs which are acceptable IMHO (I have some) but you have to get used to a slightly different sound. For sure they protect the ears very well ;)

Hey,
I'm doing dj work for some time now(trance). Also at big places, i use the same stuff armin does. They costed me 170 euros but there made for me custom and it really works. Some people will never get used to them, but me myself am already used to it. Music means a lot me and i want to enjoy music in full fequency when i'm 40. So when u think of a big dj cariere i'll advice u to buy them. When ur using good earsplugs u'll still be able to mix. Some people say u'll hear bad and stuff. But that people really havent worked on big stages. On big stages u dont hear the beat. The base is just one massive wave and u'll hear nothing. So u'll need to hear the beat by high monitor freq and u'll need to putt them louder, that is able when u use earplugs. And the best thing there is, you wont get deaf, no pieeep. Nothing. I would advice to all dj's who would like to be professional to wear earplugs. Because else u will be soon a bad quality dj/producer.

What brand of earplugs did you use? I heard some stories about Schoonenberg and Earmo, the Schoonenberg ones cost 165 and the Earmo 130, but I got them for 85 (custom fit), and I am happy with them! I also use them when going out, little harder to talk to eachother but that wasn't easy anyways :P

I use just beterhoren.nl and there i got the artistplugs with 15db filter. With those earplugs I don't got noise in my ears, and my voice stays steady, because i'm able to hear myself good enough. That's really nice, i can really recommend it. I just bought the most expensive ones because, to invest money in your hearing as a musician is never a waste. You have to do everything with your ears. So why set ur ears off with cheap stuff. But that's my opinion. Grz
