View Full Version : Why is everybody attacking PVD?

I've been noticing lately that a lot of people have just been giving back comments about Paul Van Dyk while I see that he's amazing , this guy plays tracks from 1998 till 2006 , he chooses every single track for a reason while all the other djs just spin the new stuff and that's it.
As a producer , everybody knows that his tracks are just incredible, the classic best trance track of all time " For an angel" , aslo "we are alive" , "time of our lives" and much more , I can't remember off the top of my head right now.
As a mixer, this PVD mixes in every single way possible during his sets, lots of energy all the time, I saw him in New year's eve 06 and it was just amazing , the best night of my life.
A lot of people are in favor of armin van buuren , but I've listened to his set in Nature One 06 for example and I wasn't that impressed at all , and I've seen him in los angeles last year and he was ok.. of course tiesto is out of the comptetion now.
Post back your opinion because I am wondering why a lot of people don't support PVD?

Well first of all i think you should take out the "everybody" part in the subject.
Maybe ive been sleeping but i really don't see many people bitching on him on this forum.
To me he's a big DJ, maybe one of the best of the world but certainly not the best.
I also don't agree whith you saying that everyone is in favor of Armin.
Maybe it's like that in LA but in Holland the people are less positive, i think he never reached the level that Tiesto had.
I also don't think Tiesto is out of the competition.
I will always follow him, and if he will produce a big hit then all out of the sudden everyone loves him again.
Back to your topic, for sure the fact that he's the nr 1 of the world now also plays a role in which expectations people have when going to PvD. People start to expect more from him, are yalous etc etc.

I apologize for the way I used my words Tribalismo, I changed some words in my thread , but I can't change the title , you're the one who can , so please feel free to change "everybody" in the title.

P.V.D is awesome he is very smart in live shows he knows what to play during his sets(iv met him before) his set was absoloutly emotinoal. i guess armin has a very lovely maner maybe thats why ppl love him alot he is a very positive man maybe his sets sometimes sound repeatative but still worthy to listen.
about tiesto i say the only things hes been doing for a while is just spinnig in live shows maybe thats why hes not the center of attention for a while and u consider him at of the competiotion but believe me man this man is awesmoe
4 months ago i was in his live show in vancouver i only knew like 3 songs of what he spinned but the rest i didn know (mostly unknown tracks) but the set was still 100% amazing hes awesome:wors:

Tiesto is the man!! All the others are just toothpastes!! No one will ever reach his level!!

There will be enough other DJs to reach or go past Tiesto's level... It's only a matter of time :icon_thumright: But for now... Tiesto remains one of the best DJs in my book!

I'd put PVD ahead of Tiesto in my ranking but not ahead of Armin based on what I've seen of all 3 this year.

I can tell PVD is good enough to be one of the best, ive heard a few of his sets, but he hasnt re-invented himself as producer i think.
After all cheers 4 PVD :)

PVD's ok, I still can't get over the fact that he uses Ableton Live AT PARTIES... it's just really weird for me because the past years EVERYONE loved the way he actually SPINS his sets... it's just strange that he's become a laptop DJ live even though most of his live edits are pretty good..
im awaiting on his new album (when is it coming out?) to see if he has come down to earth a bit or not...

ok heres why EVERYONE is bashing PVD.. because PVD used to be really amazing and top of his game.. but for the past few years he's definately been lacking.. showing up to gigs with sets that he's premixed entirely already on his computer sitting at home doesn't help his cause.. he shows up with a set already done on ableton and messes around with looops and other shit.. and his sets nowadays are random, i heard an amazing set from him from the club or love from above or soemthing, and then heard 2 horrible sets from him from fritz soundgarden.. within a few weeks. pretty dumb.. i think his sets are random. after hearing pvd on sets i've downloaded for years i saw him live @ 11/11 this year at roxy, there were times where i was having the "time of our lives" and there were times where i wish i had bought my pillow with me so i could take a nap in the bathroom. this kind of randomness and inconsistency's does NOT impress me, he's not as good as he WAS.. and i hope noone thinks he's at the top of his game production wise either.. saying his new track stormy skies was the best track he's done is the dumbest thing i've ever heard, the track is mediocre and boring at best, very lacking in alot of areas, not what i had expected from pvd, although its similar to "the other side" it's still a step down from that track too.. and that track wasn't all that good, pvd i think is on the low for a while until he decides to stop showing up with premixed sets and do some live work again.. and stop playing inconsistently.. Armin has been better than PvD overall this year.. and noone ever said tiesto is out of the game, he was taking a break haha.. he's coming back.. you heard his set at global gathering.. was simply amazing!.. tiesto is coming back. not the same tiesto from 00.. but a different refined tiesto. times are changing and he has too.. but pvd isn't as good as he was.. then again nor is tiesto.

not to say that PvD is bad or anything, still one of the best dj's. but he's not the PvD that i fell in love with when i first started listening to trance years ago... PvD, tiesto, and armin have all changed.. and for the worse i feel, but they are all still good, and i still consider them all in the top 5.. along with sander van doorn and markus schulz.. SvD is getting up there really fast, good stuff. all in all i'd say armin is better than the rest at the moment when it comes to Djing.. although if you've heard the past few ASOT's before you see him live, he won't surprise you much.. thats why i stop listening to ASOT's a month before i'm going to see him, so i get surprised with the goodness.. tiesto doesn't have that problem with no radio show. and pvd's randomness means he'll have his ableton set to play anything from anytime, you never know what's going to happen.. but it's not always going to be good =(

Vascog, I thank you so much for your opinion , and you've put me in the corner and I can't really disagree with you , thanks for all of this , but I am going to see Paul Van Dyk and Armin and Markus in the same night , http://monstermassive.com/2006/tombofdoom.html , so I am really looking forward to see who's better when they meet face to face , but I thank you again:bg:

@Vascog
I agree with you on the Tiesto has changed in a bad sort of way, but Armin has definitely not. I saw him at Trance Energy 2006 and have listened to many other Sets this year, although I do not always like his live sets, this year definitely has the best Armin sets out there! But I guess it all goes down to opinion.
You know what DJ is really lacking these past years? Johan Gielen. I don't like his sets anymore and his radioshow is doing nothing new, not that I dislike that, but he isn't "changing" as you put it. It's really a shame
But with every DJ gone bad, there comes a new DJ with a lot of promising talents.:x_hypocrite:

My only criticism of PVD is that it would be good if he played a little bit more melodic trance rather than just hammering for whole sets as he sometimes does

@ commander: yeah you're right armins sets this year are the better than his older sets i agree, my opinion on him was on his state of trance shows, i heard a few of his older asot sets and they were a much darker trance than some of the stuff he plays today, i'm a big fan of dark trance, hence why i am liking SvD alot
@ pharoah.. i just checked out that event you posted, in-FUCKING-SANE god i hate you.. seriously haha, times like this i wish i moved to california more than anything in the world.. but i'll move there soon enough.. watch next year they have this one in new york though, and i'd damn myself for moving to california... such is life.. that lineup is so incredible... but the venue is only open from 8:30 -4 or something, and they prob won't start it until 12 or something... 4 hours isn't enough to get a good idea of everyones sets.. for all the dj's they are having it would have to bee open from like 8pm - ... 8pm to get a strong set from all the dj's.. i can only dream..

i agree on with vascogs theory PVD is random , i live in sydney , australia and ive seen PVD sets , at the time he was promoting politics of dancing 2 and i didnt think it was as good as he was supposed to be according to critics , thats my opinion on PVD but Armins performance in sydney always goes off no matter the set i think its just the atmosphere of having Armin in the building or the fact that everyone is on drugs which really doesnt dissapoint their affection on the music being played but over all i still think Tiesto always has something up his sleave and in due time he will come out of the closet hahaha anyways ...

uhh you do know fritz soundgarden is PVD's GERMAN RADIO show that he just mainly introduces new tunes or tunes that he really likes.., not @ a party ?
i don't know where you get the idea that he premixes his sets to use at live parties, because in many interviews he's ALWAYS stated that he plays/selects the tracks depending on the MOOD and feeling of the crowd.
just because Tiesto spins one decent set in a year doesn't mean he's coming back, he's been consistently bad ever since he went hardcore mainstream (pirates of the carribean, nice shit Tiesto!) and um, no one says Tiesto is out of his game...? is this the only trance site you read? way more ppl dislike Tiesto than PvD, Tiesto's basically enemy #1 to the majority of the main, and REAL EDM fans out there... dunno where the hell you've been but I guess its cause you live in the US and are surrounded by robots who think Trance revolves around Tiesto haha...
as for Armin, well he's turning more and more like Tiesto. just spins the same old usual shit that is played to death and that every other DJ plays, and he seems real desperate to claim #1 DJ on DJmag, plus his ASOT sets lately have just been fucking mediocre and stale.

I didn't post this discussion for a fight or anything , and still you don't have anything to back up your comments, and you're getting a little bit too personal and bringing a bad vibe over here ! and don't insult a dj like you said "He is fucking shit" every dj has his own personal message, maybe if you spin yourself you would understand.

i think we've become somewhat spoiled with pvd. i remember in the old days we were hunting for sets because there were few and far between. NOw, its become so much easier to get sets than before. thus, we see similar tracklists from week to week and people complain

oh sushi my friend, I don't think you're being fair here , really look the tracklist for his livesets and the ones that he plays on the radio for example. it's so different.
of course there are few songs repeated in the livesets because it's the hit of the year and he goes around all the world, and I think if you would see him, you would want to hear every single song that you think he plays too much.
anyway , that's your opinion , and thanks for sharing it.

Tiesto is for the masses, PVD is for the genuine music lovers. Anyone with any idea about Trance will know who the real genius is. Tiesto has had is moment and i doubt he will again. Some of his old tracks were good but know he is being left well behind.... I have seen him 3 times and they were all clean cut mixes, just very poor tunes for the clubs.

Why is everybody attacking Tiesto? Why is everybody attacking Oakenfold? WHYYY?!?!?! WHYYY?!?!?!? Because some people just don't like popular DJ's, no matter how good they are, and some people just have different tastes and opinions about good DJ's. For that reason DJ polls are complete nonsense and should come to a halt ASAP. Just like questions like this. MMM, just got an idea....

Quilty of charge! These day if find myself slaging him of very often. Hes style has change a bit over the last 2years, Ok yes has always played electro, house, techno etc in hes sets. but these days hes just plays a hell lot more of it, i prefer nice uplifting trance. Saw him 5times last year, 1 was the worst pvd set ive ever heard, the other 3 was very avg, and hes set at slinky was really good. And hes doesn't produce as much these days, last year he won the the best producer award with mixmag, wtf? he hardly did anything!? i know hes busy traveling etc, so i'll cut him some slag there.
IMO Best dj in the world between 2003-2004, now i won't even put him in my top 8.

for starters, he looks like a corpse behind the decks... ive never seen him really get into it with the crowd (even though he thinks he interacts) and i also dislike his whole political agenda. he just bothers me.
edit: plus he plays stuff at like 145bpm! and thats just way too fast for me :P
