It dependson how much you have to spend and if you need a new pc/mac.
Myself I use Cubase and loads of vstis and plug-ins, but ive been producing for years and years now as before I used hardware synths and samplers. Your gonna need a half decent pc running 3 gig p4 at least but you can pick up dual cores that can match them now for less. You are gonna need a load of memory (I have twin 120 gig hard disks and a 100 gig external drive to).
A half decent soundcard (I use an M audio Deltaphile, old but really good).
A midi keyboard (Not essential but to be honest your gonna struggle with just a mouse).
Software wise its up to you, for the sequencer most start on Fruityloops (FL Studio) or Reason as they tend to be easier to pick up (And are very capable sequensers), I started and have stuck with Cubase as its awesome!!
Synths, well thats down to what you want to make, I make trance and prog and dabble in techno and use the Vanguard, Nexus, Pro-53, z3ta+,V station, Atmosphere, Juno x2, Komplexor, Absynth etc etc. There great for dance.
Softsampler, well I use Halion but Kontact is great and easy to.
Plug-ins, depending what sequecer your using it varies, I have a load of PSP plug ins, waves, tc plug ins. And most come with them built in that are pretty good to.
As mentioned its personal preference as to what you end up going for, your best bet is to get everyones opinion, or go talk to some experts in shops or online shops and they will sort you.
Best of luck, hope I was of some help.

Fruity Loops 7 if ur just starting. Get some sample CDs in the genre u want, then maybe a couple of VSTs (soft synths and effects) to go with Fruitys own ones. Then u can expand from there, keep it simple to start with ;)

to make it easy to compose your own music, do the traditional style. that is know/learn basic music theory, buy yourself a keyboard, compose your songs & play them....

djfewz.. yes there is a pretty big start up cost if you buy everything legit. studio monitors (speakers) generally cost anywhere between $500US-4000US and can go well beyond that...
As well sequencers, audio cards, midi controllers, VST plugins and so forth really add up quickly!
Plus lets not forget you need a powerful computer to handle all of this.

A midi keyboard (Not essential but to be honest your gonna struggle with just a mouse).
if u have any other talent it doesnt matter
It's certainly a big investment but there is no greater reward than producing your own tunes!!

don't you find that the headphones tend to colour the sound quite a bit?
I used to use DJ headphones as well for those late nights working but then i switched over to the AKG 240s and can never go back to my DJ phones.

My main style of compositions and music productions is classical metal or soft rock. What program will serve me the best?
I am using FL Studio 7.0 XXL Producer Edition . Is there anything better for that?

if i was you, i would proberly just get some simple software like fruity loops or reason (I found reson easier to work out). Then after a few months u like it and want to take it further, then go buy a midi controller and monitor speaks, sound card, eg.
