    Luminance - Plutonium (1999)

Good question and I'm not 100% sure. Archives of various dance music magazines from the 90's are available on the net. A glance through those would reveal the answer. My guess would be that tech trance was a term used in the 90's. When you hear a production like The Freak & Mac Zimms -...

    Luminance - Plutonium (1999)

One of my favourite tech trance tunes. Sounds simple but really well made. The B side on the original release was called Grace, the original mix of which does not seem to be posted anywhere on the net.

Philippe Van Mullem - The Secret Folder [1999]

I've loved Part 1 ever since hearing it on Paul Oakenfold's essential mix in 1999. Something about that melody that is rather unique and really grabs your attention. The whole track is really well composed actually, with lovely pads, sub melodies and other effects. It stood out for me even among...

    Activa & Marcos - Elevate / Factoria - Sculptured [Borderline 100]

Interesting listening to the Extended mix of Sculptured versus the Activa rework.... Activa clearly realised that the original had the generic steroid bassline/kick/synths/energy. So he made a few tweaks and turned it into a classic sounding trancer. Gave it more breathing space, made more use...

    Activa & Marcos - Elevate / Factoria - Sculptured [Borderline 100]

Elevate is technically well produced but is musically uninspiring for me. A fairly obvious trancer that's been done many times before. Sculptured (Activa rework), however, is an absolute beauty. As a previous comment said, the melody contains lovely melancholic vibes. Nice epic pads too. A great...

    Enigma State - Illuminate

Apart from Enigmatic, I've found ES music to be way over rated. It sounds old skool but so what? Had it been released back in the day it would have been regarded as average at best. The thing is not just to sound old skool, you have to add some originality and inventiveness to it too. Having...

What criteria would you use to properly evaluate trance tunes?

I believe that evaluating music is mainly objective. Otherwise, you get complete newbies telling you that the latest Darren Porter track is the best thing ever. The main criterion is looking at the historical context. The year was it released, what were its influences and what came before it...

Aerium pres. Avalon 62/ LJR - Eneabba / The last Satellite

Man... I didn't realise that Aerium and LJR were one and the same i.e. Jetflag. I assumed two different artists were lumped under the same release by the label, just because. But this is an absolutely stunning release. It's next level trance and elevates Jetflag to the top echelon of producers...

Mephista - Out Of The Blue (Virtua Trancer Remix) [1998]

For me the original is the masterpiece here. MIKE remix is OK but he has done much better thngs. The original is a unique slice of dark trance and was first relased on the German Taaach label.

The Olmec Heads - Spiritualised (Original Mix) [1999]

Yeah, this is a beauty. It was played a lot in the first half of 1999 just as I was getting into trance. The breakdown in the original mix always struck me as unique. Like the energy and the harder edge of the Astral mix too.

(Why) are there no new ideas in trance?

You're on the right track. It's more to do with the ecosystems that existed in music pre internet. These were thriving, profitable and self sustaining. Artist releases music on a label. Sales from vinyl/CD bring in money. Track gets licenced for CD compilations, more $$ comes in to keep the...

    Hallucinogen - LSD [1994]

The original is untouchable for me. Especially the section from 02:16 to 03:47 is out of this world.

OUT Activa - Movement: One (Mix compilation) [Black Hole Recordings]

Yeah, this is one of the best compilations in ages. Lots of tracks that I shall be purchasing. The aim was to recreate the feel of classic compilations. And to a degree they succeeded. There was enough variety to make it stand out head and shoulders above pretty much all modern compilations...

MurZo - Kiss The Night [FSOE]

I have to say that I find the comments calling people 'trance haters' ridiculous too. That is just an attempt to shame people who don't agree with a certain point of view. Instead of name calling and trying to shame, why not address some of the criticisms that are being made. As far as I can...

OUT You Are My Salvation — Remnant / Desolated (incl. Enlusion, Slam Duck Remixes)

Slam Duck remix very good. Nice drive. Similarities to Struggle for Life. Wish the main riff went on for a bit longer.

MurZo - Kiss The Night [FSOE]

Almost totally generic and unimaginative. Template production. Cringe, sugary vocal: Open up the sky, hypnotise the stars and kiss the night goodbye. I do like the strings in the breakdown. I imagine it's 15 year old kids who buy this kind of stuff. The target audience for FSOE.

The files I download from iTunes are actually .m4a. Bit rate varies from 242 to 300 kbps. They actually sound better than Wav. The only format I've heard that sounded better was .Aiff

    iTunes

Anybody else noticed that the sound quality of files purchased on iTunes is better than everywhere else? A fuller and richer sound pretty much every time. It might be to do with Apple's patented technology. After all, they were the industry leader when digital music became popular in early...
