True, I don't think anyone in Denmark, me included, demands them to speak perfectly danish, but I think it's fair to say they have to at least try to speak the language. Being able to speak a foreign language perfectly is extremely hard!

Christine, my point is that so many immigrants have come here in such a short space of time, our own English accents are being eroded. Gradual immigration would of prevented this, and "first gen" immigrants prove this, as they speak like us and behave like us.

And as Katadunkass pointed out, far, FAR too many people come here now and don't even try to speak our language, and this is a problem a lot of western Europe faces.

We have areas near me - Manor Park and Tower Hamlets, where we've put Arabic writing on sign-posts because there's so many people that doesn't speak or read English.

    How can ANYONE defend that?

We live in a multi cultural society. Its the norm, get over it. Its not going to change.
    Racism anyone?

Many Westerners of this generation have been raised with the idea that their own culture isnt good enough, that it must be enriched and the white ppls noses must be rubbed in beautiful diversity. Many European polticians have declared the multiculture a failure, but it is still living in the minds of the population.

We live in a failed multiculture, and millions of ppl are fed up with it. Thats not going to change, get over it.

The multiculture btw, refers to the model in which the different cultures live together. So it does not mean you hate foreigners. It just means you may see problems arising the direction this is heading. Personally, it requires less and less imagination from me to think this will end in wars. And im one of the most positive persons i know. Can you imagine what a more pessimistic person would think of this?

I don't think accent Is that important so long as you can speak the damn language. Some people don't even bother to do that .

To me, accents are important, as they're still part of us. But as you say, some people (a lot nowadays) don't even bother to speak our language (or the language of the country they've moved to).

Yeah but honestly, a personal observation is that people often appreciate those who try. It's the ones that just shit on the place they immigrated to that get people heated up. Of course, there's the few discriminators who are just scared of a color or an accent, but this is really a minority, at least in Western Europe. Most of the people who are now often accused of discrimination are just extremely pissed off by the immigrants that behave in a terrible way.

And why should they adapt to England anyway... they were born there and are British too, so they have as much right to do their thing as other British ppl. It is a multiculture, and "you must adapt"

It is hard, yes I admit this (I do A level German and it saps all energy from my soul on a daily basis) but, to live in a country and make no effort to learn the language is downright disgraceful. They will be used as cheap labour by companies and people who live in the country all their lives will be faced with job seekers allowance and benefits.

Yes, if you're going live in another country you'd better learn how to at least speak basic phrases and not expect that population to adapt to you. We have many cities here and a large section of the southwest that are mexican immigrants who make zero effort to speak English and expect us to learn spanish...screw that! When I studied in Paris a few years ago I made a huge effort to learn and speak French, and did so with every French citizen I encountered. Its really not a difficult thing if you put some effort into it and respect the culture/country you're visiting or living in.

Hear hear! I have full respect for people I meet to have broken English but are at least trying their hardest.

How the hell does immigrants going to affect the English accents??

Are you seriously worried that your grand children will speak with an Indian accent in the future?!

I consider myself English and so does my family. I came to UK when i was 5years old so hence why i have a Mancunian accent as i grew up here most of my life but at the same time my parents still have the asian twang accent as they were older and it will never change even in 30 years time. So its my parents fault that they can speak perfect english but with non-english accent? Should they go to english accent classes to fit in? Are they less worthy to be considered English because of their accent? BS. They worked hard all of their life and pay their taxes like everyone else.

English is just a another language and accent means FA. What about other Europeans? Germans, French, Spanish with their english accents? Are you threatened by those as well?

Behave like US??? What do you mean by this? How should we behave like? Smoke and drink every wkend? Explain.

The immigrants who dont bother to learn the language or even bother to integrate into the english society pisses me as well. Nothing winds me more than anything when every time i go into my local shop to buy some food and the Indian shop owner is there talking to his friends in Indian and i dont have the foggiest idea what the hell they are on about(may be about how silly my spiky hair looks) and they dont even acknowledge in any english. Just plain rude. :/

P.s By the way, all those children in the picture at the school mentioned will be speaking fluent English within 5 years and with a perfect English accent within 10 years.

    So what does that mean?

It's up and coming that Dutch youth with a low education speaks with a Maroccan accent.

For me Non-Resident Indians are totally disconnected with the cultural progress made by Indians back home. They're rooted in a bygone era and refuse to change or adapt. Its not just rude its annoying. The problem is that many who migrate to Britain simply cant hack it at home or are some rural farmer's kids. They have money to spend and send their kids, who cant speak 2 words of English straight to a low ranked UK uni.

And the cockney accent (native to East and South London mainly) has all but been eroded. No kids grow up speaking it now, instead they speak with a mix of that and Jamaican and Indian.

Perhaps, KI, you should read this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10473059. Wake up man! I haven't pulled these fears from thin air.
