It's early spring weather here, but I can't even take a walk because I'm up to my neck in work for the next 7 days. The only time I see the sun is when I walk up to my car to get my brother from and to work.

Have to get something off my chest.

Been stressed out for weeks now. Don't have time to relax, unwind or even meditate, still have tons of shit to do and only 2 days to do it. If I don't, I have to pay the 'client' (a girl who can't pass a course) back, but I need that money for a new laptop because the one I have is utter crap - which increases my stress tenfold because it's so slow that I can't work fast at all. Oh, and the project I'm doing, I'm doing work for more than 2 students, instead of just one. My head hurts every time I have to wrap my head around the entire specification.

It's just overwhelming, and all of those days, even hours, when I didn't work as hard have come back to haunt me. On top of that, this wasn't the only deadline this month - I had another project to deliver past Saturday (which I did), and a Machine Learning project proposal due tonight. And there's just a small breather after this, I ain't done yet.

Sometimes, in times of such stress, I ask myself, am I really that weak? What happens when I get a job and it's like this all the time? Will I even succeed? I always thought I was capable of achieving much more - and was told so by many people - but am I? That's what's killing me the most. Well, apart from the fucking laptop.

Sounds like someone is going to get very little sleep within the next few days.
All I can say is that your work environment will depend a lot on your company. I am not familiar with working environments in Serbia specifically, but my impression of ML is that it can be hectic if you're at a start-up or a small company (& you're basically the in-house ML go-to person). On the other hand, if you do something more like software development/software engineering at a large company, chances are that you will have a good work-life balance. You can find out those things while interviewing and by reading Glassdoor reviews.

I had those same fears starting work, too, if I'd be a good enough (chemical) engineer. It turns out that at a large company there's a lot of downtime, and I've had days where I basically just chilled/read documentation while waiting for training to happen (b/c I don't know enough to contribute to larger-scale, pressing projects or don't have access to a specific company system).

Sleep, what's that? Is that a requirement in the project specification?

Yeah I know, but just the face of immense pressure can get me into this mood. Eventually, my brother thought of making a pizza tonight, so while we went to the store, prepped it etc., I was already in a better mood. Just needed a short break I guess, which I don't know if I can afford.

But when I think about it, whenever it was hairy like this, I managed to succeed. I know how, just need time and a bit of luck. This project is not about ML, it's a store (pharmacy+) website, with a lot of different users and entities. It's just huge and packed with must-have functionalities, which makes it a pain in the ass to make.

I'm jealous of your job, my dream was to do nothing, get more and more money and be at some higher levels of hierarchy, among the decision-makers. :D

Also, did not know about Glassdoor, love the website!

Damn.

Haha, right now I'm just like this because I can only do small-scale things on my own right now. I'm hoping to get more responsibilities within the next few weeks.
Glassdoor is great to understand what it's like to work at a company beyond just the recruiter's spiel and what your interviewers tell you. Most reviews will be from people who feel strongly enough about the company to post online, which is something to keep in mind. You might not have the issues that a jaded ex-employee from 5 years ago did. That being said, you can look for trends and see if a company generally overworks its employees or has very high turnover (huge red flag for me, since that means most people don't stick around beyond 1-2 years).
Glassdoor is also good to find possible interview questions for whatever role you're applying at that company.

@dmgtz96 it's difficult to use the website as it forces you to share information before you can access it. But I don't have a job, I don't get why would they put this up to annoy the unemployed...

Just registered to volunteer as a judge at a robotics competition!
Not sure if I'll be chosen, and I really don't have robotics experience, but it looks interesting.

Gonna get a new laptop soon! Finally I'll be able to see what a modern Ryzen/Intel processor can do, along with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Gonna be a beast, but the drive space will for sure be a limiting factor, unfortunately.

So I'm cleaning up my old one now, deleting stuff I won't need (so as to ease the transfer process), including over 50 GB of music I've hoarded over the years. Whether that was legal or not is none of your concern.

It's incredible, discovering music I've downloaded from even 2010 (transferred from my old PC), it's like going through my electronic dance music journey throughout the first few questionable years full of trouse, sledgehammer uplifting and Armin.

The girl from a few posts back, for whom I worked my ass of on a project, seemed to have failed getting a grade today. Tomorrow she has to go out in front of a professor and the TAs, so it's not final as she'll maybe get a chance to present her arguments, but to it seems like she won't pass. And I feel absolutely terrible about it, and don't really know what to do moving forward.

It's absolutely my fault, too. I don't care about her at all, I'm just angry with myself that I didn't deliver on my promise and disappointed myself first. The money, well, I'll miss it for sure - who wouldn't - but it's not the last 100$ I'll get or lose.

The solutions, as it seems to me, if she fails, are:

a) do the entire thing again (but much better and much more) for the next September, ask for payment then, with better control and oversight over my project (which means I'll have to work again on an already tight schedule, but it's more right), and
b) say goodbye, try to keep the money I've gotten in advance (and be somewhat of an asshole)

Lol, I still listen to Tiesto's Club Life Vol 1 every now and then.

Wait, so has she already paid you?

Ive been doing that for the last 12 months lol. I had around 50 000 songs when i started. Not only trance but all kind of electronic genres. And i deleted almost 80 % of it by now.

Now i have a few thousands left to go through but its going very slowly as im sick of it to be honest lol.

Also when im finally done then the worst part begins. I will organize it a lot better genre wise and sorted by release year.

Its funny though, some songs i cant understand why i even liked before. Delete delete delete. And then on the other side of the fence are the songs that where just mediocre to me 10-15-20 years ago, many of those are the real gems now.

What happens when I get a job and it's like this all the time?

I found college deadlines, tests and projects to be far more stressful than any job Ive had. And when jobs get stressful you can always take some solace in that youre getting paid. Hang in there man

@Bluemoon I've found any organization/classification pretty pointless down the line. If a track is incredible enough, I'll remember it. If not, I'll discover new stuff. Even the tracks I've favourited on Deezer (close to 800 now), I could throw out at least 50% out of there.

@Hensmon that's good to know. Gonna work on getting better at everything until I get a job.

Best of luck!!
Have you interviewed for jobs/internships yet? Are you familiar with the recruiting timeline for those positions?
I don't know what it's like in Serbia, but in the US my classmates in computer science were among the first people to get jobs from the entire class. Although we all graduated in May, they started applying as far back as August/September and interviewed throughout the Fall semester. By ~December some people in that major had jobs lined up.
If you're graduating this May, it's probably no big deal - just keep applying and keep getting better at interviewing. It's a learned skill, and in my opinion it just takes practice and repetition. Took me a while until I finally left an interview thinking "damn, that went well."
One interview question you might run into is "Tell me about a time when you needed to prioritize multiple tasks" (or the related, "Tell me about a time when you worked on multiple tasks. How did you manage your time and prioritize?"). I think your recent experience dealing with all those software projects, including the one for your classmate, could make for an interesting answer for that question.
(... just don't mention that the project was for someone else, hahaha)

I've done a month of internship, no interview though! They just called me and said we start soon. I'm not that scared about getting a job, but I am worried about the job itself.

In any case, getting into a company with a great culture, like my internship company (which was great), would be preferred.

Got sick 6-7 hours after the first jab (high temperature, severe joint and muscle pain). Took some NSAIDs but still had mild temperature during the night. Now I'm feeling better but fatigued. Yeah, didn't liked the side effects.
