It was just seen as unimportant cheesy electronic dance music, like DJ Sammy - Sunlight. Or Sunclub - Splash. Or Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone. That sort of genre. It wasn't hammered by any trance deejay. Nor played as classic in that first decade.

Whether it's trance... or not... that's always a debate of course.

Paul van Dyk played it right before it blew up in popularity. Of course, once everyone knew about it, no reputable DJ played it again.

Sandstorm is unquestionably trance; more specifically, it is anthem trance. What do people think it is? Pop? Hard house? Euro-dance?

Of course it's pretty close to trance. At least to whatever we all called trance in 2000.

But because it's pretty straight forward, rave-y, happy commercial appealing, it also leans towards what a lot of people call clubhouse, or clubtrance. So, the style of the Klubbheads and sort. The question is, does Sandstorm belong between these?

Or, does Sandstorm belong between tracks like Cygnus X - Superstring, Veracocha - Carte Blanche, Rank 1 - Awakening, Tiesto - Lethal Industry. Etc etc.

In my opinion, it's in between these two genres. Which is probably one of the reasons it became such a love-or-hate "is it trance?!" kind-of classic.

Sandstorm is less cheesy than something like ATB - 9 pm, but more cheesy than BBE - Seven days and one week. That's all I have to say on this most fascinating topic.

It's anthem trance, so it belongs right next to Transa - Supernova, Transa - Transtar, and the rest of tracks like that. You can see more examples of "anthem trance" as defined by Ishkur here.

1. Cascade - Transcend
2. Steve Morley - Reincarnations
3. Agnelli & Nelson - El Nino
4. Pulp Victim - The World
5. DJ Tandu - Velvet
6. Transa - Transtar
7. Cold Turkey - Sunflower (Transa remix)
8. Flutlicht - Icarus
9. The Generator - Where Are You Now?

I personally think it's not. It's sort of a rave/dance music more than it is trance. It does absolutely nothing melodically, atmospherically or otherwise. It's just a repetitive acid line with a bit of a 4x4 kick and that's it. I absolutely see it as the same style of music as Here We Go and Better Off Alone than proper trance classics.

I just don't see it as trance, nor as any of its subgenres.

I'm sorry, but "anthem trance" is not a genre at all in my books.

That topic you linked to is (in my own personal view) full of strange debatable choices and errors. Better Off Alone called "Epic trance" ? That's just wrong. "Epic trance" is also not a subgenre in my books. Nor is "Dutch Trance".

Ayway, I've said anything I can about Sandstorm and the genre I believe it's in.

When the bassline of sandstorm gets mixed in, it sounds so badass actually. with that high tempo. Must have been a night that night!

Btw, sandstorm is a mix of hardbounce, hardhouse and trance? Ofc its not pure trance. But people should really question more "obvious" classics if this gets questioned,

They all belong to the umbrella "uplifting trance." Also, Better Off Alone is literally trance. It's not "pure," and it's heavily influenced by euro-dance, but it's still trance.
