Well, on the one hand it should help separate the wheat from the chaff - the serious producers who really think they have a shot at a pro release from the newbies who go around sending demos of unfinished stuff (like I did back in the day). It will make it easier for GO to pick releases because there's less boring demos, and he'll have much more time for other stuff - if he manages the label himself completely. And also, it will get him some straight cash, which will definitely help in times of the pandemic.

Of course, he has the choice to do whatever he wishes. But he doesn't run a prestigious label (in fact, what's it called?), and it doesn't make releasing music on his label accessible to all. I mean, consider the cost of software, hardware, tutorials, samples etc., that's enough to get you in some proper debt, and then you have to pay this loon 10€ on top of that to maybe get your track released from which you will surely not profit at all!

If it's a prestigious label, then I maybe would've understood his decision, because an ASOT (label) release almost guarantees a play on the most popular trance radio show, which might result in some gigs, maybe. But GO hasn't got much to offer, and compared to more popular labels where the submission fee is 0€... You have to be a loon yourself to pay.

I think it's a nice idea. A small entry barrier to stop anyone and everyone flooding his inbox with tracks and also paying him for his time to listen to the submissions he is given. Trance tracks are usually pretty long so it must take a substantial amount of time to go through and find new material. It also means his label has another source of revenue which is good for them, as lets face it, no one is buying music anymore.

Depends on the individual circumstances tbh. Someone who can afford all the production equipment comfortably will think whatever of the 10 EUR fee, but someone who is struggling to get by will see this as a waste of money.
I don't think it's a bad idea to have some kind of QC.

I thought the thread should be closed because I approached answering it from every point of view, but I just missed that "pay for his time" argument. Nice one.

The thread about the CERN Message remix has me thinking,
What kind of sound is GO aiming for in this label? With such a high barrier to entry, I would hope that GO is looking for something *new,* innovative, and well-crafted. If this is Yet Another Steroid Label, it will be trash.

One of the biggest issues facing trance today (and, in fact, for the past decade+) is that labels only release the same cookie-cutter steroid 138-140 trance because that's the only sound that fits with the label's style. If you have such an exclusive label you better damn well screen for talent instead of releasing the same trash being released everywhere.

I think its the wrong solution for a real problem.

The producer is offering his product. If anything, the producer should charge the label.

Obviously, there are too many below average releases. But Im not sure this i the way to go....

Look at it this way, the label is offering more value ((up until now) free promotion), though I guess it depends on who's the producer and which label is it. The label makes money for that promotion. But it's all negligible, really.

LOL! Producers started charging money for the feedback, what's next? Paying labels to sign music when you want?

Why not though? He is taking time of his day to listen and then giving a kind of professional consultation. Many other services in the world operate like that. He does have an expertise that could be beneficial to a lot of people if the feedback is good.

In my world that's unacceptable
No.
Unacceptable is the predatory journal model, in which a researcher pays to get their work published but the work goes through no peer-review, so anyone can release any garbage.
G.O.'s label is reviewing the actual submissions, which is fine. At least there's some Q.C. involved.
Complain once a label starts charging for submissions and releases everything without any Q.C.

He's found a way to make some extra money and if it works good luck to him. Not sure how much feedback he will provide, a whole essay?? Obviously if you like his work his feedback will mean something to you but what kind of music does he produce now. Isn't it fairly generic 138 stuff?

With $10 I would be surprised if the feedback were anything larger than a paragraph

The problem with "feedback service" is how do you say someone - your current customer (that you want to retain in the long term) - that their work sucks? Is there any practical advice for uninspired work that sounds well-mixed/mastered? How do you give feedback on lack of (good) musical ideas? Because if you don't mention it, then besides being dishonest, you're also not contributing to the proper development of artists or music, only your bank account.
