I would probably have their blood tested for the presence of certain forbidden performance-enhancing drugs as well.

This must tickle you @Daysleeper

Its a cool goal, but tbh I dont find it the most elegant or beautiful goal. Its def an acrobatic skill from that position. They relied on zlatan to be the driving force for so many year. Sweden hasnt had a quality TEAM since the 90s. They shine like once every 10 years or something. Their tactic is always aim-for-one-point 0-0 trying to out-tire their opponent.

My prediction before the game was a draw, but England performed worse than I hoped. Sadly not a great team really

Yeah, they havnt built a good teamwork really. Didnt feel like the players were in harmony. Sterling was too horny with the ball and played diva. I liked the guy with that modern blond haircut. He ran alot and felt like he wanted to play atleast. Kane did a decent job.

From what I've seen so far (and it's not much), my fav is Italy. Not my fav to win, just my fav. Played unexpectedly well, hoping they can go far. First love doesn't go away, I cheered for Italy from the beginning of the '06 WC (because of AC Milan)...oh the times.

I am totally disillusioned with modern football. Yeah, the players are bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic...but everything is too schematic, tactical and robotic for my taste. The players barely trying to beat their opponent one on one anymore.

Give me players like Zidane, Ronaldo (the fat one), Giggs, Del Piero, Figo, Cantona, Stoichkov, Bergkamp Ronaldinho, Beckham...

I donr watch football as much or follow the different leagues as some of you in here, but maybe. Maybe its going the same route as pop/rock music. The death of the rock star ? But this reminded me of swedish forward Andreas Isak yesterday. He did the only like one-on-one run and got past several opponents. I havnt followed him at all so cant speak, but the commentators said something about he had a style they hadnt seen for a long time. I actually thought Foden from the england team reminded me of Beckham in how he moves on the field.

Aaah, its up:

Still find it werid you can go through to the next stage with 3 points.

After England's performance last night, I dread to think who we may get in the last 16... I'm sure the group of death is coming our way.

I think England avoids the group of death if they finish 2nd in the 1/8th, and in the 1/4th they could meet.

So technically drawing with Scotland could be blessing. If we play like last night, I think we may struggle whoever we meet.

This became very evident in the ongoing belgium - portugal match. Very schematic. No drive, ploddy, no soul, no ones take risks, no soul :D

4 portugal inside belgiums penalty area just standing still and waiting for the ball to just land in their pocket.

Both matches today arent great in terms of football quality. The Dutch were terrible.

Yesterday was not much better either. The Danish are likeable but lack individual quality.

Italy was a let down too, but won in the extra time.

Well I'm sure there's much much more to it, especially tactics - and I'm not talking about whether it's a 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 or 8-4-193 - but rather off-ball movements to create space in certain areas of the pitch, or to have an advantage in the other. There's much more nuance to it. And opposing players know that too, they know their off-ball movements to counter the ones by the attacking team. So it's basically a chess-match at a very high level, which just misses anyone who doesn't know much about such things - hell, even me.

There's just too much money in it, and analytics and tactics have come to a very high level such that the players have no choice but to follow the game plan entirely, or else they risk their team losing cohesiveness and creating weak points for the opponents to attack. Only top players in their team can have some creative freedom, but even that is only because the match plan is built around that. Coaches just know much more than players. Risk-taking is acceptable only when you have no other choice.

And trust me, no pro athlete likes to lose.

Compare it to tennis; you just can't have an all out top-spin shootout. Sometimes you need the boring slice.

That's partly why I'm moving more and more towards NFL and gridiron football in general. It's the same there, but at least every play is dynamic and explosive, and can change the entire game.

Still find that football has a shock factor and drama that is rarer to find in other sports. When special games take place it cannot be beaten in terms of dynamic entertainment IMO. The heartbreak and glory is real!!!!. The stakes are so high and even with mere minutes left everything can change, no matter what. The Champions league 2 years ago had me in utter disbelief in what I was watching sometimes, like how could events even dream of unfolding in that way. Love it. Even if I don’t watch games I will always follow the story of what’s happening

Mind blowing day for football! Incredible tournament so far.

That finish at 90 minutes from the Swiss is the stuff of dreams. Pogba's goal also so nice. Had to be Mbappe to miss the last pen.

Loveee it! Sterling proving all the critics wrong and glad Kane has got off the mark, hopefully warms up now. Squad so defensive, hopefully next round we use Foden, Sancho, Grealish more...
