This is probably my no1 track of the year, in Ambient Trance style. Genuinely feels like something I might find in an oldschool 96 ambient playlist on Youtube. Gonna have quite a few ambient-trance tracks in my final list likely, was just that kind of year for me.

Lovely track but the rhythm of it and just overall doesnt represent trance to me. Its two steps outside the norm what trance is imo. I really think we should stick to 4x4 trance as close as possible. It just get wacky otherwise.

The scene is a in a strange place. For me one thing is for sure… uplifting trance is completely dead. A causal visit into r/trance on Reddit however and you’ll find the opposite statement. The scene is fractured and separated, and it seems indefinitely. We’re all here sharing the same word for vastly different sounds, and with wildly different benchmarks for the measure of quality.

It makes it hard to know if things are getting better or worse, because the traditional scene continues to move tragically onwards with generic, stale sounds, with no signs of really caring or changing. The underground in contrast takes these huge liberties to bend the definition of trance in an attempt to make things fit. We get the creativity and sound execution, but there’s still only a handful of tracks to claim at the end of year and the majority of the scene cannot relate or find any connection in them.

Voted Arhetip — Reflection as my album of the year.

I will have to try this

I really liked this year overal. These two below were my biggest surprises and really in a style I love, they will both be featuring. Enigma States remix of From The Sun will be my number one probably. Standard Form Crimson Dust (Spirit Mix) and Damate - Reflections was amazing too. Chris Johnson - The Infinite was my favourite Borderline release.

A different perspective. Sure, the content of /r/trance is stale, but it's because there is a market for it. Casual & new fans getting their supersaw breakdown kicks, and good for them really. Many do not care or know the evolution of the sound. The underground stuff you mention however, is not trying to fit the more recent definition of trance. Think of it as the rejection of what trance has become. I do wish there were more outright melodic tracks, but in digging deep this year I've got 140ish tracks in the 'best of 2022' part of my library that are truly trance & prog trance with little bending of the genre. The rest (400+ tracks) of the 2022 haul is quite eclectic, but it makes mixing more fun for me as I explore adjacent sound of breaks, acid infused trancey electro, dark hypnotic goa, and everything in between. The fact this area of music is not all just trance is actually a major plus for me.

As for the scene relating to it, nothing but excitement from my observations. Most people however aren't looking or aren't aware of its existence. Tracks are selling, mixes have plentiful numbers, and the scene is growing slowly. NuTrance mixes won the last two years of /r/trance mixcomps. Been discussing with olschool tranceheads and some are actually mixing new music for the first time in 15 years (the pre-2005 only crowd). And it's so bloody diverse there is something for everyone. If the scene has to regrow to thrive, and i don't think it will happen fostering the same old idea of what it is. It's coming from the roots of that old tree of music people forgot. Bring it.

I clearly have some thinking (and listening to do). I don't know half the tracks on the google sheet, but will have a review this week and put some votes down most definitely. I have 5 I know for sure! I was a big Borderline fan. Mac & Monday could be contender for best producer, he had 4 or 5 good tracks. My pick was his Sanctum Stories Remix.

Also this is was an underlooked track

Voted but will most definitely be changing once I review my Spotify playlists, your spreadsheet and other scene favorites I may have over looked. I wouldn’t say I kept on top of the scene much this year.

Yeah true this one is a bit of stretch calling Ambient Trance, but not massively. Some of the rhythms for 90s ambient was a bit more all over the place like this. What genre would you call this from your perspective? Don't mind a little liberty here and there in the list, happy to have very trancey progressive breaks (like Aeriums track Shards track) or very trancey house etc

Yeah, I might be a bit too strict btw. Isnt it just a good ol 'downtempo' piece?

My favourite this year. Would be even better if it was more trancy and not so hard techno ish but oh well. Love the mid part.
