Not that i can speak. ( having not released dance music yet) but its bought about an interesting question. When a producer goes to their studio, do they try to write a style, or just go with the flow and direction their inspiration is taking them without restricting it by only creating a sound or melody that fits a specific genre.
I think restricting in this particular way ( for me but perhaps not everyone) could bring about more predictable results and less creativity.

Maybe there should be a genre called, “Freedom Trance” . But whatever genre is tagged or labelled there will always be blurs. But in order to search a kind of tune that ‘ might’ have the feel we desire. There has to be a communication system of description, and a way for a website to categorise in order to help a search otherwise many are in the dark.
There begins the sub category of sub genres. Freedom Trance or Victory Trance as Armin mentioned back in the past of Andy Blueman.

I am not discounting what you said.

Prog House is million times better than it was when guys like Axwell put their releases there. It's not comparable.
Yes, I know Luke Chable put up a petition to have them changed over. If it wasn't for him I think we would be seeing hardwell or david guetta under progressive house. It should have been dealt with years ago like in 2006 otherwise not many people would have quit. I still feel that the quality is missing in progressive house compared to what it used to be in the past.

At first I thought this will just be a category for plod prog and trance-wannabe-melodic-techno, but I was wrong.

Currently on the top 10:
1. Greece 2000 remix (Armada) ok, this one is lol
2. New Maruwa remix
9. Alpha Tracks

Many tracks from old school thread is under Raw Trance. I don't care how they called it, but it's definitely an improvement for discoverability.

Now I wish Beatport would do the same with prog breaks.

Ah, apologies. I see. - I wasn’t aware of Armin saying that.

Maybe there could be a catogory called something like ‘Experimental Trance’ but that also would have pitfalls, although with it I think, like the new system, the positives definitely out weigh the negatives. In reality, only time will tell how things turn out, but overall i am more optimistic now. Its great to see the effort that has gone into this. If (decent) Trance comes back as a more appreciated style of music, then its a wonderful thing. I think on balance this new change will really help.

My dream is that in the not too distant future, a Good trance track will enter the UK Pop charts. This would maybe both reflect and continue to boost the scene (including the underground scene) as a whole if it happens. - As long as nothing obviously too EDM ish gets mixed up with the ‘genuine’ Trance.

Its been around 20 years since trance was last in the popular charts. But Remember…
Trends Usually Repeat Themselves This should give hope. 🫶

Let me just leave this quote from John 00 Fleming here. I agree with every single word there.

If people want new genres, they need to work on it, not just rant on social media. It was mega hard to separate the underground sounds from the commercial asot stuff. These guys like Armin and Ferry don't give a F about the darker, hypnotic sounds of Trance, they don't play this kind of music, so we (JOOF, Forescape, Landscapes etc.) don't need to have anything common with them.

This change is exactly what we all needed. Just check out the Top 100 tracks in the new genre, the quality is there right away. I just couldn't be any happier now.

I think they do care but they are keeping silent and focusing more of their energy on expanding their brand to the bigger audience rather than bitching and moaning about it.
Jokes aside, Trance should be split, but Mainstage, Raw, Deep and Hypnotic were never sub-genres so I find it odd they go there first. The irony is that listening to a recent JOOF there is very little I would put in the new Trance area anyway.
I agree

I have yet to see a trend repeat itself. This big room dance and electro fad has been around since 2005. Especially the aggressive kind as well. I like to see more focus on melodic trance like what Jonas Steur or if you want uplifting trance then something like Alan M – Famicom (Temple One Remix)

Compare number of people who had DAW, quick Internet connection and studio in 2006 to 2023, same with labels. There goes the quality.

Im talking about many years, and not just music. Look at clothing. Styles come back in fashion that were in fashion 20, 30 ,40 years ago. With music and equally i feel in culture in the 1990’s, the late 60’s were the main influence. Look at all the good indie rock music and then compare to what was happening in the mid to late 60’s. And, so many in the 90’s were heavily influenced by Hippie type culture too. (including me). In history, similar trend repeats have happened with Punk too and probably others in music. So. Why not Trance?

Great tip guys… If enough people say its changing, or going to change.

IT WILL.

(amongst other things, stock markets work like this). People are influenced by what they ‘think’ is going to happen. So if enough recognised DJ’s and Producers market, promote & advertise the beginning of the ‘Change’ then it fuels the future development by influencing many, some of whom will be new to ‘good’ trance. Others who ‘once’ were into it, will get their passion re-lit. And those for who the fire never went out, will see the continuation in a more global way of what they already know, that this music, is GOOD for you.

It's for sure a big news which satisfies both producers and label owners.

Seeing your music released on a Electronic Music store under wrong sub-genre categories was certainly not exciting and this was a common feeling shared by some producers who signed with my label too: does this mean that now people can do better music? No. If you made bad music there are still chances you may still make it bad....unless you find this change a good opportunity to see more exposure in the store, knowing that people can find you/your name/your productions easier than before.

So that is, instead, a big thing as some people might find this exciting enough to produce more works (hopefully quality ones) and be heard and supported(a.k.a. bought) by more people than before.

Some people have said "So why this has not been done for the uplifting vs steroid side of Trance?"
Well, raise same petition with major label under that scene to see this changed in that sense too, since JOOF surely can't be bothered to change that side of Trance. I don't think something will be done on that side, actually, I do suspect there might be a different music policy applied by those majors trying to 'conquer' the newly created Beatport deep/raw/hypnotic side by either creating a new (well thousandth) sub label solely focused on that or by asking some of their prog producers to change style and start making this style so they can easily go back to #1 in there too.

BTW: same should be done also on the Techno side, imho, which, to me still looks like very messed up due to the commercial-mainstream techno (ops..hard-trance?) ruling over the real underground techno.

Sticking on the main topic though, I am honoured to have been invited to join this new Beatport section with my own Chart that describes what do I think "deep" Trance mean and what to expect by my label, Landscapes Music.: happy browsing on the new catalogue of tunes in there, there's a lot of good stuff finally to listen to imo! ✌️

My opinion on this is that it's a good step for people who want to find really good songs, because right now it's a mess (even though most of the hidden gems are on youtube rather than beatport or spotify).

The question remains who will classify which song belongs to which genre?

What if someone still includes songs (remixes) like Kamaya Painters - Wasteland | Nifra & Fisherman Remix, or Andre Visior - Island Of Dreams (Miroslav Vrlik & Andre Visior Rework into "Raw / Deep / Hypnotic"?

Beatport Curation team listens to every single track sent to the stores and checks the classification. This way all Trance tracks from the previous years will be re-classified in nearest future.

Great!

Now, if only Beatport was usable, I could really enjoy browsing genres... instead we have that absurdly slow mess, since I don't know how many years.

Luckily there is crates.co
It's gotten so slow i use Google now to find something on BP.

Great to see the genres now divided and reflecting the different sounds more.

Exactly my friend, we must have a system to allow us to find what we are looking for, especially when so much is released today. Categorization is very important in music. I will now use Beatport more to find Trance because of this easier discovery for a style I like

I wouldve thought the label releasing the track would fill out a form, choosing which sub genre it goes into? They would know better than actual BP staff....

Where did he say this? I am trying to find it where he exactly said this?
