Formerly know as the depression thread on the old forum. I personally loved the discussion there, so share your experiences with depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety and anything else. We're all here for each other. :)

My depression and social anxiety was caused by watching a lot of bad things and because I was glued to the screens during my call centres days . I got turned into an internet addict.

What are you doing to remedy that?

Because of my early days I struggle with confidence, judgement, self love, self esteem because of a fear of being judged by others.

You are not alone if that helps. I have suffered from the same issues my whole life. Sometimes is getting so debilitating to such an extent that is hard to show your nose out of the door.

I don't think there is such thing as porn addiction, internet addiction, gaming addiction...In most cases they are symptom not the cause. Do you think about porn and surfing internet when you're outside, going for a walk, hiking, exercise, playing sports? I noticed that if i change my environment i don't think about those things at all. As i spend most of my days locked between four walls, bored out of my mind, it's next to impossible to not beat the meat (i don't think masturbation in particular is bad, mostly porn) or surf mindlessly.

I had my first skype session with my therapist last Monday and i'm going to be a tough case for him. It's going to be a long, long process...
I liked him though. Met him in person once in his office but he will not be able to go there (didn't ask him why, maybe because the virus, he is 76 year old). So we are doing skype sessions...

@Progrez, don't you think you need some help from the outside - psychologist, psychotherapist?

Take care.

I have, thankfully, always had a pretty strong mental health. Never been depressed, stressed or anything like that and whenever I might feel like getting close to any of that, something inside me just goes "click" and I don't care about the stuff, which eventuelly probably will get me stressed.
A good example of that comes from my work-life; I'm a teacher and almost every day we get messages from angry parents and 95% of the time these messages are irrational and sometimes even personal or extremely mean spiritied. Some of these messages gets under my colleagues skin and can ruin their entire day. It might sound silly, but some of the messages are pretty damn extreme. Luckily, whevener I get a message like that, I laugh at it (if there's nothing to if of course) and I won't reply to it for a couple of days (sometimes done on purpose). I almost never get frustrated by things like that and since my social life comes from work it's pretty much the only thing, which has a chance of irritating me.

Now, one thing I do struggle with is sleep paralysis and night terrors, which can take a toll on my mood and even physical health at times. I've found a couple of ways I can limit these experiences, but never turn them off entirely.

Well, I went to over 4 different ones plus the ones from work. It's me who has to convince myself. My former boss is an asshole he took my perfect stats with him I got nothing he slept with some of the younger girls. I was laughed at, gas lighted, traumatized, bullied and mocked and people were gossiping behind my back. My bosses were calling me delusional. after I sent an email to the top secretary and the deputy prime minister the people left that entire site a week after I resigned from a permanent role and the most safest job you can get. I live in a country which was used as a prison camp I should not be surprised by the bullying involved.

Mental health is very important imo. A LOT of people suffer daily from derpession, anxiety etc. It is however very important that you do something about it yourself, not only reliing on drugs or even visits to the psychiatrist. Taking your medicine and spend time with other people is the best medicine you could get actually. Stay healthy, both mentally and physically (covid) people :)

I've had depression and anxiety for years but I manage it so much better these days. I use Music Therapy and Herbal Therapy and it really does work. I also got myself a puppy earlier this year too and since I've had him I'm alot happier these days as I go on long walks to beautiful places along with meeting interesting people when you're out and about.

I'm concerned that i suffer from eco-anxiety but i haven't been diagnosed as such. I have felt very depressed and stressed out at times in my life. Some times i wonder how i made it this far.

You can snap out of that very easily with facts and statistics. I wouldn't worry about it. The media and the big corporate giants are weaponising this by fear mongering the people with misinformation. Climate change in the way it is portrayed by them is all a lie, a theory that is alot of nonsense especially given that the sun and the solar winds influences the temperature of our planet. I have changed peoples perspectives on this and with the evidence to back it up I have cured their anxiety over this "Eco-Anxiety". I would strong advise to avoid the establishment backed media or the Mainstream Media as it is most commonly known as. I would be happy to help provide you educational videos about it if you are curious to know more.

I don't know whether you are taking the side of the fossil fuel industry and claiming climate change isn't real or man made or you are saying they are spreading misinformation and that it is real.

That could be a good college entrance exam question. What point of view is the author taking? (correct answer: without additional details, unclear because...)
Since he's from the UK, he's most likely taking the side of the fossil fuel industry. I'm assuming this based on an article that mentions the UK climate change act of 2008 and the country's net-zero emissions goal by 2050. With a government that supports climate change to that extent I wouldn't be surprised if mainstream media supported the theory of climate change, as well.
In the US you would have the exact opposite.

Its true that politicians, newspapers and other relevant parties portray twist and bend scientific evidence, stats and/or predicitions on AGW to suit their own narrative or agenda, for or against. One thing I for instance very rarely find in speeches or blogs is the § factor on a set of recent data/stats.
The earth/solarsystem is an immensely complex system and determining the precise effect of the athmospheres heath trapping factor is just one variable in the equation.

That being said.

We are definitly warming though. Pretty much all parties except for say, fringe creationists, agree on this. And 375 billion tonnes of trapped co2 emitted in the athosphere for the last 200 years, increasing its infrared "isolation" if you will, does have a (demonstrable) impact on the whole model. Thats just physics, its just incredibly difficult to determine precisely how much due to its aforementioned complexity.

The disagreements mainly lie in:
- how much of an impact the anthropogenic factor actually has (in exact terms)
- what we should do about it (or not) which is not a scientific question, but a political one.

all that aside.

Eco-Anxiety is a real thing and something i see in (a lot) of friends of mine. I was diagnosed with depression 2 years ago and though its root cause was mainly genetical and in terms of context related to things happening in my family, the overall trigger of "helplessness/hopelessness against a situation one can't change" was the same.

what helped me a lot is a buddhist practice called Vipassanā, literally, "special-seeing", in where you practice and train your mind to in essense step back, and simply observe the sensations related to the problem.

it, when practices long enough, trains your mind to the point where you're no longer have to be overwhealmed by the problem, but you can simply take a rests/recharge stop, whithout pretending it isn't there and in the long run, learn to accept it for what it is, whithout it dominating your life negatively.

About the global warming, most people are just arguing about the entire narrative, whether it's true or not, who's to blame etc. That's obviously bad and just prolongs the warming and delays the solution.

And that's entirely what the big polluters (companies and states) want. People arguing heavily and politicizing (which is always 50-50) the issue is what gives them more time to earn money. As far as I know, the industry is the biggest polluter, but they are so because there's the demand for the products that they give us.

So instead of arguing, people should just consume a bit less. Walk/ride a bike instead of a vehicle when they can, turn off all the devices when they are not using them (such as a PC/laptop), make your home one degree colder than you need (21 degrees Celsius is optimal, I think) - just save electricity and gasoline/diesel whenever you can. Nobody is forced to put expensive solar-panels on the roof or install a heat pump (which would be great though).

@jetflag I'm curious to hear about that practice, sounds incredible. Is it better than regular meditation? Can you do it sort of on your own or?

yeah though i have an app which sort of guides you through it. Just trains better that way. Most regular meditation has elements of Vipassanā in it though, mixed in with things like metta & Samatha

the focus on the latter does more for me then your average practice meditation app though. It emphasizes falling back, and observing, actively, rather then "calming down" if you will.

Which app is it?

I tried meditation a couple of times, never really made it a habit.

waking up by sam harris. (not the book, the app).

though its classified as a "meditation" app, the focus is for the most part on Vipassanā
