It's a very specific flavor of pop-EDM. Only some age ranges will be drawn to it.
As a producer, you need a special talent to create a track like Forbidden Voices that attracts hundreds of millions of views. Anyone can create a catchy melody, but without the proper layering, arrangement, and production quality you won't get anywhere near his popularity (heck, not even 1%). This is not the same talent that makes for a great trance track by Trancefix standards. They're different skillsets.

do you produce some music?

I know this forum doesn't really care about EDM, but don't you think we should all be concerned that the biggest names are gatekeeping others from reaching the same / similar levels of success? That it's too difficult for newcomers to become "big names" even if they are talented enough to do so? and that, ultimately, the gatekeeping is driving down the quality of the most popular music?

its a bit like any hierarchy really...one way or the other a topdog rises to the top and "protects" its position there and/or sets the tone. which by all means makes sense..

the question isn't about caring or being concerned.. The question is, What to do about it other then supporting the scene/artists you love?

Capitalism… 🥲

Its cringy though, to see ASOT, supporting crap all the time just because it’s from house-hold-names.

in 2002-2003–2004… Armin made ASOT because he loved the music. Now he makes it out of a business perspective. It’s a clear change.

And that ‘service for dreamers’, which replaced the classic, is the worst of all. It’s mostly selfpromotion. This week it’s Ferry and Ruben de Ronde. Usually it’s recent Armin singles. Cringy…

but in the end it’s what jetflag said… you can support who you like, that’s all there is to say about it really…

I never listen to asot btw. I do get emails with the tracklists and I always look to see if there’s any new stuff from names I like.

Yes this is what it feels like. Love and business can still intersect together though. He seems to enjoy himself on the ASOT streams I sometimes watch.

For the topic I would guess that we see less edm pop stars as because commercial music is very transient in nature and the trend has moved to other styles. The radio doesn’t want Garrix it wants Nicki Minaj. I think EDM is less wanted at the commercial level, or that we have enough satisfying that need to stop looking for more
