Just noticed that you're fairly tech-literate and know what the heck you're talking about. You mentioned you were an architect, correct?
What's your background with programming/coding/software dev? Did you take a couple of computer science courses in college? I am genuinely curious
correct, i've studied architecture @ the technical university in Delft and one of the directions i took in the latter part of my masters is something called Hyperbody. Its basically architecture which is parametrically driven. Which means I had to take several courses in Java & Phython as well as Grasshopper (visual programming software for Rhinoceros3d). So i know how to read some basic code & program a little, but its far from me being able to program my own videogame lol.

@ the firm I work aswell as my own company i specialize in parametric/program solutions for architectural problems that require that (complex facade patterns, bridges/volumes with a lot of double curved surfaces etc.) Which is mostly Rhinoceros3d/grasshopper & Revit/dynamo. so not a lot of hard code though it does happen every once & so often. :)

I just realized I mainly use snopes for random stuff that circulates on social media, like those viral posts about chemicals for covid or whatever that you know are garbage but you just want to double check. Never really used it for politics except for maybe a couple of Trump's tweets (and anything Trump related will have a lot of supporting related articles across multiple sites).

I agree in that it shouldn't be the only fact-checking tool you use. I remember a post about the covid vaccine that circulated in Whatsapp in Mexico, and it seemed fake but it wasn't on snopes. Had to search for an official statement from the government office to "fact check" the claims in that post, which turned out to be fake and were debunked a few days later by the government itself.
This might be a bit late,
but i had to think of this thread when coming across this, and it add another layer as to why I don't trust so called "factchecker" sites.

the Balade of Snopes and The bee.

I'm surprised that the Snopes vs. Babylon Bee feud didn't blow up on reddit. The three threads I could find on that had 0 comments.
Snopes' fact checks for the Babylon Bee are labeled satire, but it's still weird that Snopes is fact-checking a satire website at all.

notable is also how they're only currently labeling it (after the facebook apology) as satire. It reeks of political favoritism, which is a nogo when you're (claiming to be) an fact check site rooted in (presumably)) objectivity.

What the actual fuck?

Facebook and Instagram threaten to charge for access on iOS 14.5 unless you give them your data

Okay, so the headline is very sensationalized, but still:

The audacity.

Facebook and (especially!) Instagram have become advertising platforms rather than social networks. Firstly it was passive (such as getting money to promote leggings or whatever), but now it's become active as well, a marketplace of sorts. Nobody knows how to milk it better than FB Group, but these choices (along with their data policies) will kill the networks. It will slowly turn into an ad catalogue.

Very manipulating to put a heart symbol next to "will you share your data with us" in the insta-screenshot.

As if it's a grand gesture a user makes when choosing for "yes"...

well..proclaiming to be a fact checker.. so basically the ultimate arbiter of truth is about as big as one can pretend to be. And the bigger they come, the harder they fall. I have a hell of lot more respect for publications who just go "this is our take on this" as opposed to "this is the truth"
I think there's still value in center-leaning publications like the WSJ (Media Bias), but with spell checkers specifically it's more like:

"Who the fuck are you to tell if this is true or not?"

Its simple, you dont have to go into that weird meta stuff. Simply dont sign up.

I wont...
The more I think about it the more I am more inclined to leaning towards moving away from technology altogether. Maybe I am just time worn but no doubt this kind of technology will be incorporated into games and VR.

I work with a lot of unreal for my job. its amazing, yet scary how quickly it seems to evolve to a point where it becomes seriously difficult to distinguish fake from real.

Yeah, I pretty much don't use Facebook proper. Only Messenger to keep in touch with classmates from college.

Saw this on r/oilandgasworkers, thoughts @Gagi @jetflag (and anyone else)?

In my honest opinion if you got hung up on the Left VS Right and Liberal VS Conservative scheme, you’ve fallen victim to the grift, let all the talking points get in your head and dug your heels in on one particular side.
Can you articulate what leftist anarchism propaganda is? What about socialist ideals? And what about traditional American values?
A lot of people are frustrated with what is being called “capitalism” in this country, because they’re getting the shit end of the stick and their frustration and anger is pretty valid if you ask me.
I’ve found that if you have any kind of moral compass and possess any type of ability to critical think, you’ll find that both sides of this fucked up spectrum are just self serving grifters praying on impressionable people.
Original thread. OP was a 6-hour account disappointed that an oil & gas subreddit leaned too much toward the left. The above is a comment in response to OP's "concerns."
