With tracks like these you kinda have to see them through the lens of not Armin/Push. Disregard their previous work, stop comparing it to Universal Nation/76/etc. and see the track for what it really is. Also, stop judging it from the viewpoint "well, at least it isn't X, Y, Z..."
I think the track has just the right amount of complexity - any more, and it would be overly saturated. The kick sounds fine. Bassline and climax are good. It's engaging enough. You can say the main climax lasts for about a minute, then the next 30 seconds provide a clever transition to the outro. Good vocal sample/chops at 4:54 and 5:08, and decent percs.
Is it super exciting, track of the year, mind-blowing forward-pushing trance? No. But it sounds modern, like it's actually from 2021, and like the producers made an effort to create something that stands out among the pile of garbage we see week after week. In my opinion, if it had been produced by anyone other than MIKE/Armin, In the Dark You Shine would not receive the same lukewarm reception that it's getting.
