Why is there an option for Facebook style likes for comments in these forums? This is something that is characteristic of social medial platforms. Forums like this are better off without it.

The option to like comments encourages popularity contests. It detracts from having a meaningful discussion. In fact, it puts some people off, those who wish to engage in discussion and exchange of opinions without engaging in popularity contests where popular opinion rules the roost.

Forums like this forum are few and far between and should, in my opinion, veer away from the type of shallow interactions the social media platforms foster and encourage. So, my suggestion, get rid!

We've had this option on the old forum for years. And it has never ruined any discussion. In fact, there were a lot more options when the forum was made, modeled after Facebook reactions, but we removed them. Plus, we're also known for having a lot of users with unpopular opinions. :D

Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely get your point, I'm just saying that in practice, here, it has never been an issue. Plus, having most likes on a post doesn't really alter anything forum-wise - there is no recommendation algorithm, you just have likes on your posts and that's it.

Alright, thanks. I see your point and glad it's not an issue.

I just really dislike anything that resembles Facebook groups, where there is total chaos and all the 'likes' and reactions make that worse. And so it immediately triggers a negative reaction in me.

But, I 'like' your comment ;)

Yeah I get what you mean to some extent, but its very subtle on this forum and doesn't really take the focus away I think here, and as mentioned doesn't effect the content you see via recommendations or sorting

I often just use it to show my appreciation of someone who is shared a great track, or maybe expressed a thought in a better way than I could have. Cant see it having too much of an impact on behaviour if i'm honest.... if anything it encourages me to be active and share more music (if people 'like' the stuff I share)

I personally like the system. Im also happy its ‘thanks’, and not ‘like’.

Its a good alternative when you dont want to write a reply per se, yet you want to let the poster know his post was good, funny, interesting, or you simply agree, or whatever.

So far I dont see it negativaly affecting the forum. So I’m with Hensmon on this one. It worked well on the old forum too.

I think it also keeps the forum clean from having too many similar posts. Now you can just thank someone to show you share their thought or taste.

We gave this more thought - Trophies, Scores and Reactions points were indeed pretty lame and too akin to modern social media bullshit. We removed all of those, and now just have a simple Thanks/Thanked option so users can still give appreciation, but without much fuss around it.
