So then fellow producers: what's the one synth you'd never get rid of, or would like to own over everything?

For me, the Juno 106 is the one that will never leave my side. A lot of nostalgia, love, and generally a fantastic simple synth that sounds wonderful.

That'd be my choice.

The Triton, though it'd be a hard pick between that and my first synth, the x5d.

I have a lot of hardware but the virus ti snow is my favourite, it just does everything and does it extremely well. Something about it feels more fun to delve really deep into over other synths, for me at least

Surge/Surge XT. My go to synth until today and the easiest I can get weird with. I also like how plain sounding it is. Like a blank canvas inviting you to put personality into it. Glad SST continues the development and keeping it as freeware.

I love Surge too. Great stuff for freeware and really flexible too.

I recently sold my Virus after 20 years. The software emulation is nigh on perfect and I wasn’t using it any more, sadly. Bit of history in that as well - the day I bought it I took it over to Rich’s house and he immediately started using it on RSE album. He then bought one.

Jon Hopkins swears by the Triton, Jetflag. There’s a lot to be said for getting to know one synth inside out, and this often comes up in conversation.

Having never owned a physical synth, and as I don't produce anymore (and presumably no PC with DAW on the desert island - or hardware alternative), my answer would have to be either:
- a massive modular wall with infinite cables for the fun factor, or
- a versatile synth that could potentially be used to play my favourite melodies

If digital, I would pick something from the u-he catalogue, always loved them.

Wavestate is lovely. Still find the sound ‘of its time’ to a degree but always loved the Korg stuff.

Korg TR rack is a cheapish gem with beautiful pads.

I do love all the old rack modules. Aesthetically they’re amazing

That aside, my reasoning is it can do anything and do 99% of it well. The only thing it sometimes struggles with is an authentic Moog sound. Can be a bit plastic compared to Arturia Mini V3 which is the only Moog emulator I have

The UAD MiniMoog is a fantastic emulation. That or Monark in Reaktor. Both really nail the filter to my ears.

Behringer model D is also a great alternative if you want a cheap and fully analogue hardware version. No preset memory though so strictly old school

heh, glad to read i'm not the only one struggling with that, I do love the scope of the libarary. The Virus TI Polar I own has all the banks practically in there

Pretty sure I ended up using omnisphere for that, I mainly work on my laptop just so I can produce anywhere whenever ideas hit. Was originally planning to just use it as a placeholder til I got home and could record the model d but the tone of it was exactly what I wanted so I left it as is. Glad you like it mate, I'm proud of that too

My favourite synth is Dune 3 by synapse audio (vst) the first big soft synth I bought. I’d like at some point to commit to my hardware synths more, struggled sorting the midi with Studio one v4 for years.

in the 90s I used a Yamaha SY35, I still have it but it needs to be fixed. Strings to die for (or live for ) - if I save the money to get that fixed and studio space to use it ..it might be no1.
