Yeah, I get that their livelihood is at stake, but it does seem a bit stupid. I mean, even if they are allowed, you just can't even decrease the risk of infection.

It's irresponsible except for maybe if you're in New Zealand or Taiwan. Even then, it'd be best to wait until there is a widespread vaccine, which likely won't happen until early next year.

Most of the big festivals attract a crowd from places all over the Earth, so I guess that's a definite no. Clubs are still problematic - clubs were opened in Serbia for a month or so (in June), and we've hit a second peak since. Until people get vaccinated, nothing is permanent.

If youre struggling to get by financially,go out get a normal temporary job for a while!

Exactly this.

I've seen many DJs participating in this. But face the fact that large (dance) festivals are amongst the last kind of events that will be re-openened.... for a reason obviously.

Damn, that really sucks.

What do you think of the controversy surrounding the Chainsmokers concert at New York City? According to the New York governor himself, this concert will be investigated. Yikes.

Cos theyre 'desperate' to play out again - isnt this a bit of selfish POV with some parts of the world still in lockdown? If youre struggling to get by financially,go out get a normal temporary job for a while!
Better yet, go back to school or maybe pick up a book to learn something and pick up another skill to learn. They are accustomed to that kind of lifestyle hence why they are complaining.

Easier said than done? It's not as if the Job market is booming at the moment. My company is hiring receptionist and HR and for each position nearly 1000 people applied. Possibly the hardest time to possibly get a job.

Then if you are a DJ and you see pubs, bars, beaches, buses filled with people every weekend you must think 'why not a clubs too' - on top of that when the death rate in the UK is less than 0.001% per day and you are wondering how your gonna afford basic stuff like food or a mortgage then I think it's understandable that people want to try and get back to work

^ can confirm, getting a job right now is awful.
These DJs with presumably few skills have to shoot for the positions that are available, at warehouses/distribution centers (ex. Amazon), fast food, and grocery stores.

Theres loads in the warehouses.

Yeah I'd say working for Amazon warehouse is the type of job people could find. Thats less than 20k a year though, so if you have kids, live in the south, have a reasonable mortgage or live in the city then that's not gonna cut it in the UK. These jobs are also notorious for degrading people emotionally through immoral work conditions and/or lack of rights. I understand why the unemployeed are not flocking to this kind of work.

As I said its a less than 0.001% daily death rate in the UK. so if youre going to stop one specific sector working, whilst letting pubs, bars, sport, public transport, schools, gyms etc open then there must be a huge reason for it. Can you honestly say that the risk of infection is lower at a gym than it is a festival?

One certainly can. There aren't in excess of 10000 people in the gym, close to each other. Also, gym-goers are easier to supervise, and correct their behaviour (not wearing a mask etc). I think our military epidemiologist (who's leading the "fight" against the 'rona here) said that the transmit rate is 2.7 or 2.8, and that's not a small number. Especially because festival-goers are mostly young, healthy people who wouldn't get the symptoms but still unknowingly transmit the disease.

The goal is not to make the entire public health system collapse, and increase the death rate as a result.

There absolutely is. Speaking from the UK we have 1 big gym company called Pure Gym which operates 260 gyms. If 100 people visit a day then that's 26,000 people per day all touching the same 20 pieces of equipment over and over again across the country. Thats just one gym company, there are 1000's of others. It's essentially 50,000+ per day interacting in small places, sweating and sharing the same equipment. Festivals don't even come close to this level of interaction. With all the gyms in the UK I would guess over 100,000 people per day interacting.

And in terms of health systems collapsing, again I can only speak for the UK, but the critical bed rate is less than 0.001% so at this stage of the pandemic that cannot be an excuse.

Your math is wrong. Not at the same time, and not at the same location, and not the same equipment. We have rules about regular disinfection and maximum number of people allowed by square meter of indoor space etc. so that could also improve the situation. And from what I've heard (from our state-appointed doctors and epidemiologists), transmission by "touching" is not as easy as once thought.

I don't think the numbers being in one place or spread out over multiple places is relevant, you could even argue the latter is worse. My point overall is that 100,000+ people may be going to the gym every single day in the UK, which is a huge number per week, in an environment which encourages the sweating and the sharing of a handful of equipment. If people are going to make the case that's safe, whereas going to festival is unsafe then I i'd like to see the criteria for the seperation, but have a feeling any attempt to define that will fail. Collecitvely gyms outweigh festivals in terms of people in rooms per day....by far.

That's what I was thinking. The level of spread described in @Hensmon's post could be true if a substantial population at each gym visited different gyms, but generally people stick to their own gym. Rather than 100,000 infecting one another at once, you really just have hundreds of people infecting one another at hundreds of locations. Not exactly the same, but my bet is that infecting 100,000 in the second scenario would take much longer.

There's no doubt that it can be unsafe, going to the gym, but festivals are much more unsafe. Much, much more. You can't control 10000 people at the same place at the same time, but you can monitor and control 10 people at a single gym at a certain time, measure their body temperature before letting them in, you can disinfect everything occasionally, not use the AC, make them wear masks etc.
