Agreed that it might be easier to search. However, deep trance genre filter is already on Beatport. There's only a few tracks at the moment, but I'm seeing signs that once popular, its gonna get bastardized. Not sure if it's the right solution, but better than doing nothing though.

Anyway, do people (and labels) actually use these sub genre filters? Since they changed it into the new design I always feel the feature doesn't work as it used to be. Beatport classic does it better.

There's one thing breaking John's logic that as soon as Deep Trance sub-genre gets filled up we can get a new main genre.

This:

There are 17,5k tracks in the Progressive sub-genre and nothing has happened.

I created a ticket in my distributor's system to allow putting music into Deep Trance, hopefully it gets enabled and I'll go through the entire catalogue of releases of Forescape. I promise to never put 'plodding' stuff there! lol

Isn't it odd that JOOF and CO aren't spinning any of those labels in their sets? I 100% agree with your assessment they fit the deep trance label, but they are either missing this up & coming growth in the scene or ignoring it intentionally.

John only plays music that works or would work in a club, that's his main rule. He never signs anything on JOOF if it's not a club-ready tunage and not mixed well, to paraphrase his words. He's played quite a lot of Forescape releases over the years too, but that's quite obvious as I sign similar roster of artists.

I would've preferred a 'high quality' tag instead. Its almost like with every new added subsubgenre mediocrity increases +++

Just another slogan to use to sound cool, but sure, could be useful for some I guess, if you know what you looking for.

Deeptrance

Longer than 7:00
Armin doesn’t play it
No unicorn adlip vocals
No EDM-kick and fanfare synths
No steroids and Blueman-16th-plucks
Daysleeper thinks it’s not too generic.

I think I would have called it ‘pure trance’ though. That way quality melodic stuff fits a bit more than it will in ‘deep trance’.

I mean, Matahari kind of stuff, deep trance?

By tapping on a certain genre on the app, a user can explore all of the top songs related to that genre. The reason why so many people are curious about Spotify's genres, however, is the fact that they often seem to make up their own. So, what gives?

Well, according to Spotify data alchemist Glenn McDonald, there's a lot to it. He developed an algorithm that categorizes music based on "subjective psychoacoustic attributes," essentially, what they sound like. This categorization is based on factors he describes to be tempo, duration, color, modernity, and femininity.

Spotify music genres explained
How Spotify discovers the genres of tomorrow

Sounds like a fun job lol especially for the person who were assigned to come up with the names

I created a ticket in my distributor's system to allow putting music into Deep Trance, hopefully it gets enabled and I'll go through the entire catalogue of releases of Forescape. I promise to never put 'plodding' stuff there! lol
Just out of curiosity, when you're using distribution service, do you still have access to your own Beatport account and releases?

Got the DeepTrance playlist already set up I see Enlusion ;)

To be honest its a great description for the music you put out. I always labelled it Trance/Progressive in my Itunes, but always felt it needed a better term. JOOF music has some that fits, but most is progressive and techno, I dont hear any Trance personality.

As mentioned in a previous post here its good that industry experts push genre etymology and classification vs the spotify workforce, who have no idea what they are doing.

Good move by Mr. Fleming. Give the deeper side of Trance more breathing room from the wall of 140 pounders that overflow our scene.

Is there a Deep Techno or Deep Progressive classification in beatport, or even in general? That seems just as appropriate and with a lot more productions realistically fitting that mold, rather than Deep Trance.

Yup, 'Trance' is a dirty word these days.

That's why you have all these sub genres like 'melodic techno', 'melodic house' and my favourite 'future melodic' (FFS  ) whaen all of these are essentially prog trance in all but name.

I mean:

ARTBAT are one of the current 'cool kids' of melodic techno... but honestly tell me how this tune is anything other than Trance? 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Melodic Techno is basically Progressive Trance in disguise, in fact, Armin, Ferry, A&B, Cosmic Gate and a few others have been playing this kind of music in their radioshows for quite some time and when I sometimes listen to their radioshows I just think: "Ok, we're finally seeing the return of proper Progressive Trance, which is great!" but then again, people like ARTBAT, Stephen Bodzin, Cristoph, Space Motion and many others will never properly admit they play such kind of music because, let's face it, thanks to people like Giuseppe Ottaviani, Dash Berlin, Aly & Fila, Sean Tyas, Dan Stone, Allen Watts and all those trashy 138 producers, of course Trance as a genre has a pretty poor reputation, I mean, who in their sane minds will take seriously a genre which shows as a main example of "the best in it" tracks like these?

I mean, I'm ok with a bit of cheese from time to time, there's no problem with that but there's a limit and tracks like these go way beyond that limit yet the mainstream Trance community keeps celebrating these musical abortions as if they were the next big thing in the Trance scene and once again, I ask: When this kind of tracks are apparently what's celebrated as "the best Trance music has to offer" do you really expect any producer with a single shred of dignity to want to be associated with a genre like this? The answer is obvious, of course, I don't really think I need to explain that for anyone who can add 2 +2, if you ask me.

UPDATE: FROM JOHN 00 FLEMMING
(from Facebook)

New main Trance Genre.

I’m ending the year with a Christmas gift to the Trance community, I want to reassure you that things are still running full steam ahead regarding our project with Beatport to make a new main Trance genre focusing on the specialist/underground side of the Trance genre thats been neglected for a long time. If you missed my original post, the link is in the comments below so you can see what we’re up to.

We’ve been reading your valuable input, comments and support so I’ll keep giving you regular updates here of whats happening so that you can keep contributing and we can all work together as a team to ensure we create something special, so please keep your feedback coming. We’re not 100% set on the final genre tag (always the hardest part!), we’ll be announcing soon ideas and again your feedback will be welcome (as things stand code named Deep Trance). For your peace of mind and to ensure this works we’ve already found a curator that will ensure the right vibe music stays in each genre, its important for it not to get diluted with the wrong music something that can often happen when something new arrives.
We also spoke internally regarding the vibe/BPM etc, though we all agree the ‘feeling’ is most important over everything else, but also felt a Bpm range of 125-135 Bpm (+) fills a void thats really missing in the Trance world inc Psy, so this seems to be a sweet spot to create something new, fresh and original + its organically happening at this tempo too. It also takes a step away from the Trancy feeling Progressive House/Melodic Techno releases that sit around 120-125 Bpm, its a really challenging area as there will always be a crossover between genres.

I’ve already spoken to many of my close DJ/producers colleagues from across a range of genres and they are super excited with the news of the new specialist/underground Trance genre, although many have established careers in Techno, Progressive House, Psy, mainstream Trance etc, their roots and introduction to the electronic scene was in the original underground Trance world, and are itching to expressive this side of their musical roots knowing there’s a genre that compliments their work. We also need your help to spread the word to as many producers as possible (tag them into your replies) letting them know that they too have an outlet to express their Trance side and play their part in investing into the future of this new chapter of Trance. We’d also love to see more females leading the way as the Trance world has always seemed to be heavily dominated by males, this is the perfect timing to not only make change with music but culture too.

These things take time to set up and will take a few more months until launch, this gives plenty of time for producers to get to work making new music in preparation (also moving Deep Trance thats currently sitting in other genres), hence why I’m giving you plenty of notice and frequent updates. From my previous post I saw producers and labels asking how to deliver their music, once we announce the official genre tag next year, your distribution companies will add this to their portals. For now lets focus on making the music in preparation for this movement, its one of the main reasons I’ve delayed my artist album and 00.db album revisiting many tracks so they fit perfectly into the new genre.
Also feel free to send me your new tracks so I can road test them, many producers have done this already and its awesome seeing the reactions on the dance floor being blown away as they’ve been transported into the musical future. You’ll also see me playing on a few more Trance events this year playing peak time sets showcasing this new powerful sound.

I’ve never felt so excited and motivated, this truly is a beautiful movement thats organically been happening over the past few years and proud to be playing my part in its growth. Please keep those comments and input coming.

Have a wonderful Christmas and holidays.

PS. Producers that know me well…get busy and make me some music and send it over!

Me:
Im glad the name is up for debate. Deep Trance is not quite clear enough and I agree with you guys that i feel its already been a genre for ever.
Hard to know what to call it but hasn’t Solarstone’s Pure Trance already started a kind of thing like this years ago? Can’t wait to see how this movement begins. ie first genre defining release.

If enough people contribute and pull together for John’s movement its more likely to get the right music.

Some are not hopeful but lets stay positive guys. Proof is in the pudding, so lets…. make some pudding. Lets in whatever way we can, steer it in a good direction. For Music’s sake. For Trance’s sake.

Probably a silly suggestion but maybe it should be calked. “Actual Trance” if it follows the idea of being proper trance and not an abomination like much so called and actually hard to type for fear of thinking about it a lot - EDM!!!😤

🫶

Merry Christmas

Actual Trance
Oooh that's a bit iffy, knowing it will probably be a bit more on the ploddy side of trance. Pure/Actual/Real/etc. are definitely not the right choice. Hell, someone (like maybe myself) would even debate the "trance" part as well. But let's wait and see where this goes. Would like to hear a reference track.
