Not fond of the rhythm of the bassline and percussons. Its stale, slow and sterile. Sounds like he got inspired from the Adam Beyer stadium techno. Those stabs are pretty unusual sounding, and thats good and I give him credit for it, but unfortunaly I dont like it too much.

I want more drive, flow, groove and subtle elements in my trance, and emotion. Even that this has all "trance" elements in it its not that trancy for me believe it or not.

I like The Clutch a lot, bought it a few months ago when it came out. Oakey played it a lot on his radio show. The stabbing sounds are pretty cool and original.

I agree with you once more @Daysleeper about the percussion here and also the need for more flow/emotion/drive, but I think you would be surprised at how amazing tracks like this can sound in a club environment. The context of the experience changes, and elements are intensified and brought to life. Even through a personal HQ speaker system there would be noticeable changes. Just from listening again in my £200 headphones compared to my PC speakers I find the percussion sounds more appealing/enjoyable.

But really there is no reason Trance like this shouldn't work in all environments and contexts, no matter how dynamic or HQ the speaker system is. In the past there was never this issue. I think producers today are working with these incredible studio speaker set ups and sound-optimised rooms, where everything comes to life easily, but does not translate that experience to the average listener/speaker experience. That's just one guess. When I design interfaces for apps and websites this is a similar issue in which the designer may use the latest retina, high resolution screen to build visuals, yet when we ship the product it will be viewed on many types of screens, often medium to low quality. This causes things like sharpness and colour to be effected, changed and often ruined. It does not work for the average experience. We are encouraged then to make are designs beautiful for average quality hardware, which will usually work on HQ hardware with no issues.

Clutch reminds me of a slow M.I.KE push production, equally with odd elements that just dont fit (base, drum, percs)

Remember the past has a very good and interesting synth lead that i like, but any build up just goes out the window when he decides not to kick right into it. The synth lead deserves more.

I think Junkie XL reiterated something similar, himself and Hans Zimmer not working in fully sound-optimized/whatever rooms, because if you can make it amazing using a decent enough setup, it will sound even better in a perfect world. Could be wrong but then again, he doesn't make EDM anymore, which has been touted as the hardest to mix actually. Plus they have a lot of sound engineers and other pros that work with their stems later.

The tracks are really decent, I have to say that. I like the style of both of 'em, though I think I also prefer The Clutch. There a couple of arrangement tweaks, especially in the build-up that could've made it better, like introducing those stabs earlier on and transitioning into the climax a bit more naturally (I despise these stop bars before the climax).

But ultimately, regardless of how it's mixed and mastered well, the beats are kinda stale. But that may be simply due to tempo, or the more spaced-out approach. They seem like they don't evolve much, and they don't really make me move at all, although I like the ideas and sounds. And also what DS said here, no flow, no groove...and also no subtle elements - and in a production so clean, you could've really gotten creative with lots of different background elements.

Seems kinda harsh to take this all out in a thread where the tracks are good, yet leave all those generic uplifters alone, but it is what it is.

All things considered, I usually find The Digital Blonde's beats much more stale, and Activa's more sterile.

P.S. You got a typo there in the artist name.

Am I the only one hyped up for Remember the Past? I liked it much better than The Clutch. Its ambiance is the right kind of dark and spooky that I enjoy in lower-BPM trance, it feels rich in sound, it's cohesive, and its synth is nice. Yes, the track doesn't immediately go to the climax, but I didn't mind that because it hits damn hard and we still hear a climax later.
The Clutch sounds like it would have been better off as an old tech-house production rather than trance. Its individual elements just don't sound good together.

Tracks like these are at least trying to be authentic in ideas or production, and they have potential. They are interesting enough to get the mind thinking about certain things. The generic uplifters I find there is nothing to say that hasn't been said many times, its all obvious and not asking for any deep thought. These tracks above are 'good' tracks, but I am wondering what they need to become 'great' tracks. Seems so close, yet so far ha

Yeah, I still don't know how you can hear Remember the Past and think "nope, this has no emotion/drive/flow/groove."

Decent release. Nothing standout but they are ok. Hope someday he'll replicate the success of his Radiance tune. That was a massive release. I like the Remember the Past better.
