See title, haha.
I'll get us started. My first big break from trance happened after I'd been listening for a solid 3 years. Started catching up on the pop music that I had been neglecting thanks to trance (2011-2014 era). I've also had times where my go-to genre was D&B, whether liquid or metal.

What about you? What do you hear once you get tired from trance and take a break?

Yes, I took a break from Trance from late 2008 and 2009. There were a lot of Underground Progressive House releases back in 2009. I took a break earlier this year. Hearing First aid by Nitrous oxide brought back good feelings of 2006.

Trying to be diversive in terms of listening to electronic music so I won't get bored, that's why now it's smth like 30% trance, 30% dnb, 10% psychill, 10% techno, 20% other genres.

But since I've started listening to trance I can't remember having a serious break, despite from 2016 to 2017 when I got into army and had just no access to music.

Damn that's a long break.

Yeah I've had a few, but nothing planned or too long. Just kind of hit the saturation point with it, and then for a few weeks or so I listen to something else entirely... But ultimately, I always come back to trance.

My first long break were around 2009-2012. I was tired of Team140 degga-degga stuffs and ended up digging underground progressive/breaks. The second one is around 2018 I think, where soulful house took over my playlist for months (but still following updates on trance through TF). But every now and then, there's always time where I switched my go to genre for several weeks, either DnB, Breaks, Progressive, or pop.

I started getting some massive Trance fatigue in the years before starting Uni (around 2014 or so), admittedly, I even started to hate it, but I'd say it was more about hating the direction/sound the big scene was going rather than the genre itself - I mean, around that time Armada was either steroids, poor mans Spinnin or Armins cheesy bullshit. Also M. Schulz (imo) dumpstered his label Coldharbour and his radio show, moving more and more into the "Festival" Trancer territory instead of the trippy, dark prog roots that made him memorable in the first place.

And of course, artist after artist jumping on the EDM bandwagon (Leon Bolier, Sander Van Doorn and so on) felt a bit disheartening. Of course, they'd argue that they are "evolving their sound" or "experimenting" or some other generic non-statements to avoid saying "EDM is successful and I want the easy paycheck". I mean, isn't it convenient that almost every time an artist "Experimented with their sound" they just happened to experiment themselves into the most generic EDM/a somehow worse EDM knockoff (like the Jochen Miller releases around these years, if you know, you know).

By the time I started Uni I was just done, I bought Spotify Premium and just started exploring everything their algorithm would throw at me. I discovered loads of new sounds for me like Shoegaze, Psych Rock, Experimental Hip-Hop, 90's Jungle and I could just go on but then I'd probably write a phone book.

I didn't return to Trance until last year
Sorry for the wall of text. Trance is still my favourite genre and has a huge personal meaning to me as I basically grew up with it, and I guess my brain wanted to vent frustration.

My eclectic tastes has helped me when trance has become less interesting or my life changed through friends, uni, fitness, work etc. I've been in that faze for the last 10-15 years. I love rock, prog rock, indie, metal, grunge, hip hop, DnB, trip hop, some 80/90s cheese classics (we have those moments right ?), ambiance, lo-fi, electronica ,the occasional techno, rave.

Acts such as Beck, David Bowie, Nirvana, AIC have been more relevant to me as I have got older. Trance and Prog trance no doubt has a special place, it's like that odd relationship with a partner that you know you want, doesn't always work, but you still crave and need. It's my go to for the gym and running but it's not the genre that excites me the most anymore due to the saturation of where it has evolved to.

First break was from 2006 (i absolutely forgot that this genre even exist) until i doscoverd this genre again in 2014 thanks to some youtube trance video
Then i take break from 2015 until 2020 because i make 65hour non-stop trance mix, and then 1200 trance selection songs that take me 7months and listening to trance 4-5 hours everyday (all my free time). My head started to hurt.
Just try listening to that genre every day several hours and do a project with it, you will take a break pretty quick.

Never had a real break but i have diversified a lot when it comes to the genres that i'm listening to now. Like most i started with uplifting trance but that became tiresome at some point. Also listened to a lot of vocal trance but when that became more like pop music i stopped.
Always been a big progressive breaks fan too but i always lumped that in under the trance umbrella. Progressive House, Techno and more ambient/chill stuff also came too play. And not to forget Pop music. Sometimes you just want to sing along ;)

Between 2009 - 2017 i really ignored the existence of Trance music (and it looks like i don't missed out anything(?))

but i still think the house/techno stuff that i'm into is more in the connection with the 90's trance than the modern trance, my taste have not changed, but the genre did, even Sven Väth says: “People are getting a wrong interpretation of what trance music is all about. Actually I think I play trance. I honestly do…because I don’t let people go."

I took a break in 2008 where the progressive sound had vanished for good and I just felt very frustrated with everything music. I had been listening to Trance too, but that was also leaving me at a loss I thought that it was over for good, that this part of music history had finished, but since then became more relaxed and open to other styles of Trance/Prog and rediscovered my love for it again 2016/17, ironically listening to lots of 2008-12 music and finally enjoying Anjunabeats releases and catching up with what I missed.

No matter how many breaks I take I always return back to Progressive and Trance. The best moments and memories of my life are with this music, I hope the genre goes for another 100 years.

Wouldn't say I took a complete break, but 2010-2014 or so, I didn't listen to anything new in the scene. Revisited a few classic compilations but that was it.

Listened to a fair bit of liquid dnb, classic rock and metal over that period.
Like some of you, I have very eclectic taste in music! It's the question I hate the most "What music are you into?" Because my 100% honest answer is "a bit of everything"

I think the technological change of DAW from hardware to software has had a profound impact on the way modern dance music sounds.

Many times, everytime it helps things get fresh. I remember two years not sure about period somewhere between 2010-2014 I listened only technobase.fm (happy hardcore/future trance, hands up techno). I opened it right now even and omg its playing a favourite of mine Ph Electro - San Francisco, its from my first 5 mixes ever made. My first mixes before I even started learning djing so it makes me very nostalgic. Also for some time future beats and house. I always liked LP so to some degree always some metal/rock/new metal, mostly 90's stuff apart from LP.

The last 4 months too I haven't listened anything new, just focused on producing as much crap as I can. Btw check technobase.fm, you can thank me later, listening atm...

I took a break from trance during 2006 when trance seriously went downhill with artist such as Daniel Kandi and Sean Tyas. At the beginning i kinda liked it to be honest but after a short while i got bored as fuck and realized trance wasnt the same anymore. The raw gritty sound was gone and now trance started to sound alot more polished and clean.
Instead i started listening to rock and metal music, alot of trash metal. It took 4 years for me to get back into trance when i discovered how fucking awesome old goa trance was with artists such as Astral Projection, Miranda, Doof, Etnica and so on. Since then i ditched rock and pretty much listened to only trance and filmmusic. Still today, most good trance being made is GOA. A genre that really embraces the oldschool sound instead of striving as far away from it as possible.
