Sandstorm release date: October 26th, 1999
John 00 Fleming's essential mix date: February 12th, 2010
Today: February 26th, 2021

There are 3759 days between Sandstorm and the essential mix. Meanwhile, there are 4032 days between JOOF's essential mix and today.
Calculation 1
Calculation 2

Discuss.

I think it's interesting because 1999 feels like a lifetime ago, but 2010 feels not too long ago. The essential mix is probably one of the better trance mixes in "recent" years after Trance fell from mainstream popularity, and it still feels fresh today.

Haha yeah, why Sandstorm, why not the first ever trance track? That would make more sense, but then the thread wouldn't be made at all.

Said no one ever
name me 1 other trance track that has had the same long-lasting impact on music as a whole for all kinds of listeners (not just trance or electronic music listeners, but in general people who are into rock/hip-hop/other genres of music).
i'll be waiting
this song went straight into the mainstream, well beyond the Euro bubble of clubgoers, and is "that one 'techno' song that everyone knows"
Most random thread ever.
That's what forums are for

Ha yeah this is a very odd discussion point. Sandstorm just a popular radio track and Fleming essential mix just one of many many good essential mixes, dont think his is particularly known or celebrated. And then some random time calculation? You must be high when you made this.

This essential mix from 2000 is arguably better than the one from 2010. Look at the tracklist on this, incredible. 🤯

Opens up with Shapeshifter here, the other one with Elemental Nature, both amazing tracks. He drops tune after tune here, but all with an underground and deep flavour and avoids any of the fluffy mainstream trance stuff that was around at the time. The variety in the tracks is huge. And he drops the records at just the right times to where their impact is the greatest. Examples, Definition of Tekto and Full Moon.

I'd say tracks 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17 are all classics and the ones in between are not merely random filler tracks but finely selected to complement the overall flavour of the set. Yep, JOOF is a legend.

0:00 1. Dominion - Shapeshifter (Part 1)
7:40 2. The Cybermen - Hydraulix (Sleepfreaks Remix)
11:45 3. Roland Klinkenberg - Inner Laugh (Steve Porter Remix)
18:18 4. Starecase - Not So Blue
25:14 5. Karova - Still Secrets (Manhattan New York Mix)
29:48 6. Manhattan - Psychomanteus (Chemical Dangers Mix)
38:18 7. Odessi - Moments In Space
47:38 8. Airwave - Innerspace
56:45 9. The Mexican - Shadow Stalker
1:02:10 10. Adelphoi - A Better Tomorrow (The Mexican Remix)
1:07:55 11. Area - Definition Of Tekto (Silvio Ecomo Mix)
1:14:55 12. Human Movement - Traveller's Theme
1:23:16 13. Body Shock - Full Moon
1:29:10 14. Digital Blonde - Legato
1:37:45 15. Faithless - God Is A DJ (Astral Projection Remix)
1:44:20 16. Krystal - Burning Flame (The Final Instrumental - Act III)
1:53:55 17. Reysan Khan - Shi-Du 2000 (Mark Shimmon Remix)

LOL it's all good
In reality I just chose Sandstorm almost randomly because it was the first popular track from the Golden era that I could think of.

Sandstorm is actually the most played Trance track of all time - on Youtube. I think by far & away aswell.
Armin's Bla Bla has 521 million views, well above the 201 million from Sandstorm.
Sandstorm has a much stronger "cultural impact", though. If Youtube had existed during the time of Sandstorm's release,

I'm sorry, and Sandstorm is?

They both have something in common with trance (the elements), but they are both far from it.

Sandstorm is a weird one. I've said it before. It really wasn't seen as a trance classic in the first decade of it's existence.

It was just seen as unimportant cheesy electronic dance music, like DJ Sammy - Sunlight. Or Sunclub - Splash. Or Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone. That sort of genre. It wasn't hammered by any trance deejay. Nor played as classic in that first decade.

In the past decade, big name deejay's, both "newer" ones and "legends", do play it during festivals. So somehow it actually does get praise and plays now as if it were a trance classic.

My conclusion is: this track had a very strange journey turning into a trance classic. I personally like the track, and it's a fun one when played out live, so I don't mind. Whether it's trance... or not... that's always a debate of course.

Sandstorm became a meme a few years ago. I don't know exactly why, but that's why it's so well known now.

Sandstorm was reasonably popular, but I don't think meme status is a fair reflection of a tracks impact at the time. It's like saying Never Gonna Give You Up was the definitive 80s pop track - maybe it feels like it now but that was never the case before 2008.
