Just bought the CD of this wonderful album. As I born in 2003 and started to listen to trance on 2019, I know very few about Platipus. I started to systematically search and listen to the label these weeks, before that I only know tracks like Viola (Armin van Buuren Remix), Madagascar (Ferry Corsten Remix) and the label is lead by Art Of Trance. I knew from here TranceFix that some @Narel and @Coredata tracks are inspired by Platipus, so it's time for me to rediscover.

Back to this album. When I listened to it for the first time, it might also be the first time I listened to the Original Mix of Viola, such a familiar and different melody.

Another track that caught my ears is 1AD, which has a recitation of an ancient Chinese poem: “银烛秋光冷画屏,一院香。” . That reminds me of the Shagohod in the @Coredata Wander album, with ”绿树阴浓夏日长,楼台倒影入池塘。满架蔷薇,轻罗小扇。” The poem in 1AD describes an autumn night and the one in Shagohod describes a summer day.

However, these words are not the full poem, so I'd like to post the full version of them, hope you can enjoy them. And I find that the "一院香" in 1AD is from the poem in Shagohod, when “轻罗小扇” in Shagohod is from the poem in 1AD. What a tribute! I think I am the few people in the world that can realise that haha.
秋夕 【唐】杜牧
银烛秋光冷画屏,轻罗小扇扑流萤。
天阶夜色凉如水,卧看牵牛织女星。

Autumn Evening - Du Mu [Tang Dynasty]
Silvery candle, autumnal light, chills the painted screen
With small fan, of light silk gauze, she swipes at the flitting fireflies
On the palace steps, the night is cool, like water
Laying down, she gazes, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl stars
山亭夏日 【唐】高骈
绿树阴浓夏日长,楼台倒影入池塘。
水晶帘动微风起,满架蔷薇一院香。

Summer Day At The Mountain Pavilion - Gao Pian [Tang Dynasty]
Lush green trees thickens the shade in this long summer day,
Image of the tower reflected in the pond.
Crystal beaded curtains swaying in the gentle breeze,
A full frame of roses, fragrant overflowing the entire courtyard.

However, my favourite track in the album is the title track. I can't explain how much I like it. Simple, progressive, trancy.. makes me listen it more than 15 times in a week and determine to buy a CD of the album. If I am a producer in the future, to make a track like this will be one of my goal.

That's it, hope you like the album too.

What a wonderful mention of the Chinese poetry!
As a Chinese person, I felt more than honored when I first heard the Coredata track.
These two poems are composed around 800-900 AD (only 100 years later than Beowulf), showing the rich tradition of poetry and literature of the Chinese language at that time.

A possible explanation of the use of poetry in both tracks is that the recitation of the two poems are included in the same sample pack, but sliced into sentences (or even half sentences). So the non-Chinese producers may possibly rearrange them completely.
But I'm not a producer, I don't know what pack it is or in which way they were ordered.

The poem by Gao Pian (mainly used in Coredata - Shagohod) actually describes a beautiful summery vibe. This is definitely not a perfect match to Coredata's themes, but the poem indeed adds an illusional / fantastical / magical (or "奇幻" in Chinese) atmosphere to the track. I think this is what we may all agree with, no matter whether you speak Chinese.

So, in both tracks, I personally like the use of poem very much.
If I became a producer in the future, I may also take use of some Chinese poetry (probably "锦瑟" or "李凭箜篌引"?) and make trance tracks of this old Platipus (or modern-day Coredata) style.

@NameLessYet check out this album. It has a lot of the Platipus classics and some lesser known ones. Definitely part of the DNA of my tunes, still a fav album. I was chatting to Anthony Pappa about it recently, was done on vinyl in one take. The guy is next level, and always has been.

I know very little about Platipus, so thanks for recommendation!
Is your music style influenced by (or trying to reflect on) the Platipus tracks?
As a person from the younger generation, I don't know about old Platipus, but I know the modern day Narel and Coredata, and the moment I listened to your tracks, I knew this is the type of trance that will grab my heart the most deeply.
If your style did show resemblance to them, I will start to dig more older classic tracks, and trying to find the gems.

Mate I’m 43 😂🤣. I got into Platipus records aged 16 I think. That sound has always been an influence, though doesn’t come through as much as it does with Coredata. But he is waaaaaaaay better than me on so many levels.
I got played Jarre, Vangelis, Oldfield as a kid, as well as hearing all the 80’s synthpop, then got into hardcore and drum bass, then trance so I think my influences are wide. I’ve never pinned them down.

Thank you! And this is the first time I know your age haha, only 5 years younger than my dad.
I'm 22 by the way, and I'm not into trance until 2018, and my place have very little atmosphere of electronic music. (So I feel a little bit envious of Europe)
I was planning to put your "On Surface Dances" into my new set, so I do know about the DnB influence.

I would listen to more classic tracks in the future, I promise.
I will never experience that golden age by myself, but I may work hard to get a grasp of the tracks back then.
The Platipus tracks are fantasic!

I used to have this album! Blast from the past, I’d totally forgot. Probably in a CD sleeve case, scratched to shit in an attic somewhere

Thank you so much for this as I've wanted to know the meaning of the poem I sampled since I made Shagohod over 5 years ago! That's very greatly appreciated. 🙏

So is the poem sample you selected in Shagohod a tribute to 1AD?
