New major change on Beatport: The Trance Genre is divided in two

So, I was recently checking out Beatport and I just realized that a new major change regarding its music genres has just happened: If you check out the music genres available on Beatport you'll see that, similar to the current division of Techno in two major branches (Peak-Time / Driving and Raw / Deep / Hypnotic), Trance has also been majorly divided more or less the same way with the "Main Floor" section dedicated to the more commercial/mainstream sounds of the genre and "Raw / Deep / Hypnotic" for the deeper, more progressive and more hypnotic sounds of the genre. This must be a very recent change, it probably only has a few hours as of now because I was on Beatport early this morning and I didn't notice anything different so this must be absolutely brand-new at the moment.

I personally applaud this move on behalf of Beatport and I must say that I'm quite impressed with how fast this new Deep Trance movement is growing to the point that there is already a channel on DI.FM fully dedicated to this kind of music called "Deep Progressive Trance" and now with this new proper division on Beatport I believe this can be promising as we're finally seeing the genre officially properly splitting in two which, in my very honest opinion, was something that was more or less happening already, this new move on Beatport just cemented that once and for all.

What do you guys think?

I saw Flemming's FB post on this, it's fucking good idea if you ask my opinion. How does every other genre on there have so many sub-genres, yet Trance, arguably one of the most diverse genres, lump all the bullshit together into one mess. But I am surprised uplifting trance doesn't have category yet.

Finally this has happened and me and my label got a home on Beatport. All the artists who put their hard work has got their own genre. This is an absolute game changer, fantastic change from Beatport. I was proud to contribute my part into this and I still do help them.
I don't mean to be negative but this is similar to someone labelling and bringing in 'progressive house' in house music. Personally, I don't think this actually solves the problem this will become a giant mess like progressive house has become.

Technically you can choose it as a subgenre in the "Trance (Main Floor)" genre, but I agree with you, it should just be its own genre and that's it.
What the hell is Raw Trance....
It's basically the oldschool sound of the genre produced nowadays, something like this:

By the way, this is easily the best track I found while searching for tracks there:

This is exactly what Hypnotic Trance should sound like!

Does anyone still use beatport?

Jokes aside, Trance should be split, but Mainstage, Raw, Deep and Hypnotic were never sub-genres so I find it odd they go there first. The irony is that listening to a recent JOOF there is very little I would put in the new Trance area anyway.

There's so many questions to answer, so will cover some here.
I don't work for Beatport, just got hands on campaigning, helping and advising for the more specialist side of Trance so it has its own place including 'Trance' tracks that are in other genres like Techno, Progressive House. We all felt the frustration trying to find the music we wanted.
Regarding the names of the genres, a survey was sent to all labels and these are the results, the industry picked them. I don’t play mainstream Trance, nor uplifting, if some are unhappy with the naming of the regular Trance genre, instead of words, take action like I did. I can only speak and try and represent the world that I know, and change came along for my world
😀

Some are asking for more genres to be included like Hard Trance etc, I think baby steps first and those will come as the Trance scene grows again, lets keep collectively keep working together putting Trance back on the map, the same thing happened with the growth of Techno, eventually they had six genre homes.
Re Progressive Trance, the true meaning of this derailed years ago, for example John Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren pioneered this back in the day, and its nothing like that today, so will continue to cause confusion, its wise to start fresh to stop these debates.

Let me just leave this quote from John 00 Fleming here. I agree with every single word there.

If people want new genres, they need to work on it, not just rant on social media. It was mega hard to separate the underground sounds from the commercial asot stuff. These guys like Armin and Ferry don't give a F about the darker, hypnotic sounds of Trance, they don't play this kind of music, so we (JOOF, Forescape, Landscapes etc.) don't need to have anything common with them.

This change is exactly what we all needed. Just check out the Top 100 tracks in the new genre, the quality is there right away. I just couldn't be any happier now.

At the end of the day. Beatport listened to the people who were making the effort to create both clarity and are attempting to bring back a type of music we love to more people. And that might help a lot of people, in particular producers. It was never going to please everyone, but then as John says on his Facebook post.

wow.

the problem is rather on obsessing over sub-genres and making "music to fit a style" intead of making good music. just spreading out the genericness more. The priorites are totally shifted.

Not that i can speak. ( having not released dance music yet) but its bought about an interesting question. When a producer goes to their studio, do they try to write a style, or just go with the flow and direction their inspiration is taking them without restricting it by only creating a sound or melody that fits a specific genre.
I think restricting in this particular way ( for me but perhaps not everyone) could bring about more predictable results and less creativity.

Maybe there should be a genre called, “Freedom Trance” . But whatever genre is tagged or labelled there will always be blurs. But in order to search a kind of tune that ‘ might’ have the feel we desire. There has to be a communication system of description, and a way for a website to categorise in order to help a search otherwise many are in the dark.
