Remixes sounding better than originals is largely subjective, but there are a few examples where the remix received more attention than the original.
Zwette's edit of
Tom Odell - Another Love is the first that comes to mind. It's that 2013 deep house track that became HUGE during its time and now has 510M views (the original has only half that). It probably helped that the uploader used Cara Delevingne's face.
Robin Schulz's remix of
Prayer in C was everywhere on the radio in 2014 and now has ~600M views, but the original version barely has 2.2M views. The original was a fine
indie track, but the deep house version won the public's attention.
A-trak's remix of
Heads Will Roll became part of popular culture when it was featured in the movie Project X, and years later it was also the subject of a meme. The
original is famous on its own, but the A-trak remix is several times more popular.
