I mean, if you look at Chicanes 4 biggest tracks: Don't Give Up, Saltwater, Offshore & Poppiholla, only 'Don't Give Up' is an original track.
Saltwater is a cover/reimagining of The Theme From Harry's Game by Clannad, Offshore is very close to Love on a Real Train by Tangerine Dream and Poppiholla is a remix of Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros.

Yes I know they were done with permission (Not sure on the Tangerine Dream one though), but it's amazing how blinkered he's being here.

I think he had such an uproar from his fans about this,he was kind of forced to make that video reply about it. I mean,as us artists, what would we do if it happened to us?

"Muh intellectual pwopurty!"

in a music scene 50% build on sampling.. 😑

edit: I just remembered something. Helstrip did a 100% remake of Halcyon for his album and Nick was fine with that. Maybe its not even "muh intellectual property" that Nick is flustered about, but the lack of decency. Harris is a competent producer and Dj, who, no doubt, was inspired by Offshore for this track.

I actually reccon this whole drama could have been avoided by him just giving a shoutout "for inspiration" or something like that.

New female DJ Rozie on the latest ASOT episode is probably the "shocking stuff" . This is why I don't like video stream.

Well, it's not that its more along the lines that Nick is allegedly accusing Calvin Harris of stealing his track. I mean this could mean all those xpander sample tracks should be taken down for copyright claims then. I hear a similar sounding guitar but I have a bias towards to the remix by Nick Bracegirdle.
I think I may have been misunderstood because it sounds like we're arguing in agreement. I don't see any correlation between these two tunes, hell Nick even had to jump through a few DAW hoops to even get them sitting in a similar phrasing/pitch which is what I meant by reaching

Of her dancing and lip synching the vocals? It sounded like a typical set that I might hear during the skitz mix.

Re: the Offshore debate. If this is copyright infringement or plagiarism then we're all screwed. Pretty much everything in music and especially electronic music is derivative.

I'm in the curious position of having written a track nearly 25 years ago (Bass Tarts - Summer In Space) that some have claimed was ripped off by Calvin Harris for My Way but I'm not rushing to sue him because I think any similarity there is most likely coincidental. If it influenced him then great.

Summer in Space itself also isn't completely unique. It's a bit tongue-in-cheek (5' 42). Lange and I had a laugh making it. There are hints of Three Drives - Greece 2000 which is an absolute classic. No one ever had a problem with it because the main melody and chord progression are very different.

I honestly think Nick B doesn't have a case here especially because of the similarities between Offshore and Tangerine Dream's 'Love on a real train' from the 80s. Offshore almost certainly influenced CH's decision because familiarity is actually an important ingedient in most of the biggest tracks (read KLF 'The manual'). It's a much abused shortcut in making music. Why try to reinvent the wheel? There wasn't really any need for the abusive language from CH though. It's that 'insta culture' that I hate in dance music. Give Nick the respect he deserves. He may not have reached the heights you have but the very fact that you reference his music in your own is testement to his influence!

One thing's for sure. This wont hurt either of them. Offshore is probably climbing the charts as we speak and CH is laughing all the way to the bank as usual. I'm not a fan of much of his music but there's no denying millions are. Anyway, I'll be selling 'It's not the fucking same!' T-shirts (or are those words, in that order, copyrighted?🤣)

I dont hear much resemblance with Basstarts and the CH tune - both very simple plucky melodies.

I could list 20 Trance tracks which have that two chord plucky melody (not similar to your track, you know which one im on about).

That's pretty much my point. If we start trying to claim copyright for a style or a vibe then it's over because the zeitgeist of music and most other creative arts is built on that. There is very little true originality and even if you do create something completely original it's more likely you'll be ignored because people only tend to want something familiar. There are landmark tracks in dance music like when Zombie Nation or Loneliness blew up right in the middle of trance? It was a seismic shift but there were a ton of other tracks at the time that could have impacted like that and didn't. We all take influence from what came before us and to deny that is just ego.

BUT, I'll add. Even if you don't get recognized for that tune you made that is just weird or different you should absolutely do it because someone will always find it and love it. Whole genres have been built on that. Better do that than download a template and kick a few notes around in Ableton.

LOL you're all good mate! I can hear a hint of My Religion and a few other tunes but how is that a bad thing? I'm flattered if I influenced you in any way. I'm sure My Religion was probably influenced by something else at the time but I'm so bad at copying that I accidentally made that ;)

Also the book ‘How to Steal Like an Artist’ by Austin Kleon.
Essentially, even the most avant garde, experimental artists are still the product of the art that inspires them, therefore all art is technically theft ;)

Anyway, I’ve been inspired by this Chicane/CH argument and am currently working on a track using that same 1-chord technique they both use.
not a guitar patch though, so it’s definitely not the same 😆

Just been going through some of my unreleased ideas and I might have 'accidentally' ripped off' BBE - 7 days and one week, Green Martian - Industry, LFO - LFO and about ~10 other famous tunes. I'm tempted to test this theory because these are ideas I didn't copy but I can tell they share some similarities with well known tracks. It's probably not for this thread though.
