I agreed the fuck out of that. Was just saying to Narel yesterday about how it feels like people don't write musically expressive riffs anymore, it's more about the mood or the vibe

I'm always dubious about the attitude that "things aren't changing". Do they have to? House music and rock & roll haven't changed much (I don't think they need to) and they're both popular as ever. It's a weird way to criticise a trance track of all things

Rock n Roll/Doo-wop (50's). Surf, Folk and Blues then came in 60s, and Psychedlelic rock emerging later in decade. 70's then saw Heavy Metal, Progressive, Soft, Glam and Punk. 80's then got New wave, Hair Metal, Death metal, Gothic, and loads other stuff. Then came 90s with Post-Punk, Grunge, Brit, Shoegaze...and before the decade was up Nu-Metal, Alt Rock and Indie creeped in becoming huge in 00's, joined by Emo and Pop.

House was exactly the same, as was Trance, Drum & Bass, Jazz, Classical. All modern genres up until around 2010 went through aggressive changes and evolutions in roughly 5 year periods. It was constantly changing and that was the natural way of things before globalization disrupted it all. Trance changed or added new sounds every 5 years from 1990-2010.

What new genres have we had in Trance or Prog in last 15 years? Maybe Deep Trance/Prog sound (which was kind of already being done in 2010 (mystique music), and then the Nu-trance stuff which is more or less trying to revive old sounds.

as someone who has closely followed 'House' and 'Techno' for the last 25 years, I have to disagree with you. both genres have gone through powerful waves. in the early 2010s, 'House' saw a strong -deep dubby analog- wave that dominated clubs and festivals, acting as a counter-movement to the heavily digital and melodic sound of the 2000s. + by the mid-2010s, a distinct 'Lo-fi House' wave emerged, characterized by its raw, unpolished but cheesy sound and, represented by names like 'Mall Grab' and 'DJ Boring'. some of their tracks have even racked up more views on youtube than well-known 'Trance' classisc. currently, now is 'House' scene in a another era where 'Progressive' is the most talked term (hated by many old heads, but loved by youngsters). even more has happened within 'Techno', but I don't have the energy to get into all of that right now.

It always depends on how you see and feel 'trance'.
For me, it's a vibe, a flow, it's always spiritual. A 'trance state' as the name suggests.

I am long done listening to the same production method ever and ever again. The fucking same programmed beat in every new production. It's frustrating. That's why I lost interest in most of todays trance music. Even in Activa because it also sounds generic just more melodic and traditional. But He use this style for over 20 years now. It might be hope for some people here because he doesn't jump on the big Psytech/Technotrance train. but 20 years ago we would say it's boring. That's what it still is, just boring. Sorry to say.

Yes I also loved the bombastic riffs from the likes of System F, Gouryella and so on as a teenager but nowadays it just sounds like a big cheese. It has nothing to do with trance music in a traditional way. It's music for the commercial fanboys and girls in swimsuits (same with the so called 'balearic trance' of whom I was never a fan of). I cannot take it serious despite of great memories in my youth.

For me, this is trance music in the 2020s. Nearly everything from Anton Maikos SOME1 is amazing and he delivers quality since 2019 meanwhile (not to forget his old project Mindwave which was also very good):

My comment is more about acknowledging that all genres have historically shown to be very transformative and susceptible to change, and it was the natural way of things. Around 2010 the pace and scale of that definitely regressed (broadly speaking), but I agree with you that House and Techno escaped it better than others. I'd say Trance, Psy-Trance, Rock, Drum & Bass, Dub Step and some others stagnated a lot more.

I feel like this conversation on where the genre should be pushing and how some sub-genres sound samey has been going on for decades.

I decided a while back that it is pointless trying to please everyone, so I just make music that I enjoy and if other people like it, or labels want to release it, that’s a bonus.

I will say though, some producers take themselves far too seriously.
If you wanna put out a Spice Girls bootleg, then do it, Queen, I’m not gonna judge 💅
