Honestly never heard that word before in my life. What does it mean? Is it a sub-genre of Hardstyle?

IMHO Schranz is a sub of techno and used to be a thing arround the same time as hardtrance was a thing.
Take a look for Sven Wittekind, Robert Natus and Chris Liebing their sets and tunes end of the 90's and the really early 00's :)

Both faded away as soon as hardstyle became a bigger scene so I understand you'd call it hardstyle

Schranz was and is a terrible buzzword that describes monotonous, hard dance music. Schranz = in German a combination of the words scream & dance, Implemented by Chris Liebing in the late 90's. Nowadays, Omega Drive, David Moleon or the technoid tracks of Stoneface & Terminal would also be included.
But you should not confuse Schranz, Hardtechno and Hardtsyle

Mostly genres come and go. Imho with schranz going more to the background, it made room for hardstyle ;-)
Of course hardstyle has grown, you are absolutely right. But the hype was created earlier, I don't think that this is due to the shrinking of the hardtechno scene. Most of the scene has turned to Techno. On the one hand, the listeners have become older, and the music is getting too fast. On the other hand, more money can be earned with techno. And not to forget the everlasting minimal hype. But now we are drifting away from the topic.

Still can't believe this is not trance, found this one in a dj pool by shear luck. One of my favourites for sure such pure and deep melodic sound. I played it in a few mixes including a guestmix this week.
