so youtube in all its wisdomness decided to recommend me a song from TDJ. Never heard of TDJ until today. I was certain it's some old-school band or something, given everything I've listened to in the past week.

Well to my surprise I found out she is a young producer from Canada and I think there is something going on here guys. I've spent the last hour browsing through her albums and sets. Here's a sample:

My God. Im only listening on my phone. And. This music has something ive not heard. Hard to describe. The only thing i can think of is, there’s something advanced about it. Almost everything about it. Now slow it to 125-132 bpm and I wonder what it will sound like? @Hensmon. You may not like vocals in most ’ trance ‘ tracks but you should examine this. Especially the music. Personally i quite like the vocals in this track. In some trance of the past (4 strings ) the vocals in my opinion reall add to the feel, but definitely not always. @Daysleeper. I’d be fascinated to see what you think too.

Is this actually trance? …..I say. Yes.

Not familiar with this particular producer/artist, but I can say right from the start its one of these "y2k" aesthetics artists that you can find in especially random playlists on spotify or in niche reddit threads or on tiktok. Kinda "underproduced" but with a nostalgic throwback vibe. I dont like the big bunch of it, because its not meant to be taken seriously. Cant say im a big fan of this production either, it feels very underproduced to me, almost like a "uglier" copy of those they try to mimic or draw from.

Cool. Interesting response man & thank you for responding. ( I thought you’d probably say something like that but wanted to ask just to see if ive missed anything or if I just hear something differently)

Im about to listen on my headphones so can provide better feedback for what i think about it. ( I only listened on my iPhone 13 last night)

Il edit this comment when I have. Perhaps il be disappointed. But i don’t think i will. I initially thought it sounded like some other stuff, perhaps what you described, but there wss this indescribable vibe to it too so maybe my headphones will make it vanish or present it clearer. Will edit this comment in a little while with feedback added.

OK I listened on an old pair of monitor headphones ( £25 Roland closed back, R5 i think but pretty decent despite the price) I currently listen to everything on them when not in my studio.

feedback:
@Daysleeper. I think you could be correct on a few points, but im not that familiar with y2k stuff. It certainly sounds less impressive than it did last night on my iPhone 13. Maybe that phone does clever stuff with frequencies and sound /space dynamics. Or maybe i was just feeling rather high on life and let emotions creep in a bit much. ( moi - emotional? Hmmm, I think we all know Im occasionally a bit too affected that way)

In saying that, I don’t hear the cheapness or underproduction. I also hear a bit of the vibe i felt last night. And, I actually rather like it in a way. I feel my phone speaker may have enhanced a certain aspect of the sound that effected my response. But i also feel, if the track, or this style coukd be done with greater depth / or actual’ enhancement of the partical sound/vibe i mean, with certain musical trickery and fx it coukd sound super fantastic! Perhaps it’s already being done with certain y2k. Il investigate. But the resonance / atmosphere im talking about is quite eerie, its quiet but if brought out and seriously advanced and expanded on, it might even sound Alien. Cheers for your thoughts though pal.

2nd edit.
Svenson & Giellen appeared on a y2k type mix i heard on YouTube. The beauty of silence. It kinda has a part with the fx i mean, but is better than above track. I like it a lot. . ….. il investigate further.

3rd edit.
Had a goid search, reddit & mixcloud. I actually still feel there is something different in the original posted track. A vibe, an atmosphere that if enhanced correctly coukd be quite ditictly different from anything ive heard. Perhaps in in the herz she used. The key, the pitch, the notes. But something in the atmosphere is different. And actually it’s different to the svenson and giellen track I mentioned. Its a similar reverb ush thing but just more eerie hertz or pitch in the track from the original post. ( maybe it’s because i experience synesthesia via sound into images and this original post track creates something strange. Who knows 😁heres an interesting link on the phenomena of various types of Synethesia. How Do You Know If You Have Synesthesia?

This sounds real good. I remember when I first heard a square pusher Record in year 2000 in a pub in Winchester UK. A dj was playing this track which i just thought was someone trying to be Aphex Twin, but lacked all what made Aphex Twin unique. I know that is a elitist opinion. Although In saying the above, the fact Square Pusher has such a passionate following must mean he has something of his own. Unfortunately because of my first experience of his music I haven’t listened to a full length track of his since, seeing as Aphex Twin changed the way I see sound.
Its about time I shook off this childish attitude tho as he is involved in this track with Mr D James himself. So this record has triggered my wish to investigate Sq Pshr. Such many fans surely can’t be wrong im thinking. So im hoping il learn something.
And eat some self induced humble pie.
