Honestly, yeah.
There are times when you want to hear well-crafted, balanced trance with finely-tuned layers and structure like Hoopoe - Matahari.
Then sometimes you just want the balls-to-the-walls, sheer insanity of steroid trance like Indecent Noise, Sneijder, John Askew, and so on. 💪

My next contribution to this thread is Indecent Noise - Cerberus [2014].
It's nuts and would give "Ace da Brain - Depths of Doom" a run for its money.

Played live at Dreamstate:
Haha, I remember hearing Cerberus that night at Dreamstate. It felt like being in one of those Halloween movies where you know you're next to get brutally killed. The recording has a big hall effect to it though, not the best setting to hear it live.

I dont know who takes the cake these days, because when you avoid this shit more than your neighbours, its really hard to post something "good", but it seems fredjan turned this around again into something that doesnt mean steroids and instead just banging? Steroid trance has a negative connotation, it doesnt suppose to be something you banging your head to once in awhile when you had too much caffein, been working out or had too much booze.

I really dont think it did exist before 2006, def not before 2004, and most certainly not before 2003/2. Then it was banging or hardtrance, and techtrance. I challange anyone to post something from 2005 that could be considered steroid trance.

To me it came with Seb Brandt,Sean Tyas,Björn Åkesson etc. And I think Devine especially is a really great example of something that could the birthchild of this style, thats why I first mentioned it in the old forum. Its all about the foundation of the track. I challange anyone to pic a more fitting track, that came earlier. Some say Lift but not as much imo, although it shares some of the steroid charahteristics, and I understand why oldschool trance fans from back in those days looked down on it. It all comes down to this more broish foundation of the track. It got more bare, the arrangements were simple, the drop took the centerfocus, The focus was on making it sound as robotic as possible basically.

It was several years later it took the next step into becoming more of the sound most reference today. FSOE,Monster Force,ASOT took over what Discover,Vandit,Somatic Sense in a way started.

My pick is UCast - Jump. To be fair, anything done by Photographer, UCast, Harmonic Rush and early Sean Tyas had a unique wall of sound construction so I was and still am a big fan of their tracks. I'd say these are artists that at least brought enough originally to make them stand out.

For me Discover and their slew of new artists at that time (Tyas especially, but also somewhat Askew to some extent and the Irish gang) started the wall of sound. However, productions from the 2006-2009 period, while highly energetic and raw in it's nature, still had a lot of thought put into them in terms of forming a melodic continuum.

Nowadays, there's a huge discrepancy between the intro/climax and outro which is nothing but an overcompressed mess filled with as many layers as possible without any cohesion, and in the middle a melody that has no place in such a stupid musical construction.

It's a matter of interpretation I'd say, but some early 2000s S&G tracks do somewhat also fit into this mold. Although, with hard trance being at its peak back then you can also just consider the productions as part of that sub-genre

Metta & Glyde is the current champions of the style. Listen to that, just ridiculous.

This actually raises a very interesting point. I've always thought that a lot of steroid tracks would be better if they just went full-on tech/banging instead of tech intro, random melodic section in the middle, tech outro. We're Ghosts and Cerberus are straight-up no bs bangers that leave zero room for melodies, and the outcome is a largely coherent track that isn't really steroid trance.

Dang, that's awesome you got to experience it live. And yeah, there are no good recordings of Cerberus live unfortunately.

S&G were big room-y (the equivalent of big room in 2000 anyhow), but they were not steroid.

hmm, but that isnt steroid-trance is it? :p TECH?

That sounds more like simon patterson style. I think he was the first with this.
There's a point where both genres sort of merged, and virtually all tech-trance was also steroid trance. Tracks like Cerberus are more like the exception.

Not much steroid at all imo.

Just a big phat kick. But that doesn't mean steroid per se. There's a nice bass around it too, and various hats 'n stuff that are all very subtle.

Lot of tracks posted here are not much steroid, or just average steroid. This topic shouldn't be used to post any remotely steroid 138. It's created for the "worst" cases.

The production value on some of these is far better than what you think.

technically most of them are well made, it's more a question of aesthetic taste.
