It was the first trance track I ever heard. This track bring me the love to trance music. I think, not only to me. All began from "Tiësto: In Concert 2", when I saw this video on TV. Original release also include remixes from Fred Baker, Danjo & Styles, Phynn. But original version is truly gold of trance music.

Original LP Version

Fred Baker Remix

Danjo & Styles Remix

Phynn Remix

Yeah, it's not a bad track. I'm pretty sure that's the general opinion about Tiesto's Adagio.

But every long term listener will always remind newcomers about Ferry's remix in 2000. That's the track that made Adagio For Strings what it is. I mean, it's likely that Tiesto would never have made his version, if Ferry's wasn't such a classic. Plus, this might be the first track where he "just put his name in front of it", eventhough it's clearly a remix. Since, we've seen it multiple times, and I've never liked it. I mean "Paul Oakenfold - Cafe Del Mar". No, it's a remix. But that's another subject.

Anyway, at the end of the day Tiesto's version is pretty good. It's banging, energetic, lovely. But.... Ferry.... :)

Ferry's Remix was in 1999. Funnily enough, that version exists mainly thanks to Tony McGuinness (Above & Beyond):

"...I worked at Warners on the original, aborted release of William Orbit’s “Pieces In A Modern Style” in 1995, and played the unreleased CD all the time: the first track was Barbers Adagio. I’d come home from clubbing and stick it on, and thought it might make a good trance record. My brother and I started mucking about with it in my studio, and with some other classical Adagios I had Midi files for, including Albinoni. After William became famous with Madonna, I started talking to him about releasing the album properly and maybe getting a dance mix of Barber’s Adagio done. He was very keen. This was before I met Jono and Paavo and so in the end I sent the midi files to Ferry Corsten and he did the mix to my brief: Gouryella but with classical music. He did a great job. I suggested Albinoni to William as another track for his album but he didn’t like it, so I thought I’d do it myself some day. It took a while to get round to it."

Skip Raiders also made a vocal version of Adagio For Strings in 1999 called 'Another Day', which was slightly less popular than the Ferry remix overall, but became Oakenfold's go-to version and was used in the film Kevin & Perry Go Large.

And Tiesto was playing his version as far back as 2003, it was the opener to his first 'In Concert' that year. Not sure about In Concert II, never watched that one. It was fully released in early 2004.

5 years ago Adagio For Strings was performed by Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík, Iceland.

This is my favourite version :)

Such a trance-for-beginners track ;)

I avoid all, and I mean ALL, trance tracks that has a famous classical melody trancified. Allthough ferrys adagio and pavane remix arent that bad.

I was jamming to PPk - Reload (or some other tracks of theirs) the other day when suddenly a classical lead appeared from nowhere and I had to turn it off right away.

This was "trance for beginners" like 10 years ago, back when Tiesto's Power Mix was one of the most viewed trance videos. :p
I think Tiesto did a good job with the remix. It's techier than other versions, and I personally prefer it instead of Ferry Corsten's remix.
Edit: I would argue that as a trance track it's pretty unique, and its sound is difficult to replicate.

Its a great track but prefer Corstens mix. They both have a different take but, I would hazard a guess your preference is dictated by when you got into Trance.
It did end up blowing up much more then I thought it ever would.

Yeah, probably. I've never "felt" the Corsten version, but that's probably because I heard the Tiesto version first and I somewhat have a bias against trance pluck melodies/supersaws. For me the more aggressive, tech, two-step sound of the Tiesto remix works better.
That's not to say either is better, I'm just saying that I agree with you, haha.

Gonna weigh in here with what might be, but shouldn't be an unpopular opinion.

For all the incredible music he produced; Tiesto's version of adagio for strings is trash.

Ferry Corsten's remix is the one. There is no other.

Lol I love how polarizing this track is. You either love it or hate it. Depends on your taste and how much you like the late '90s trance sound.

tiestos remix works very well. the bassline raped rapes and will rape. it's similar to prodigy breathe. actually a timeless classic.
