04. Tri-State - Above & Beyond

This is not an easy list for me I have to say. I only know my top 3 :D

1. Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
2. Paul Van Dyk - Out There And Back
3. Astral Projection - Trust In Trance

Best electronic OST has to be Solar Fields - Mirror's Edge Catalyst, this is simply a masterpiece in IDM/trance/breaks

It would take me quite long time to really think which would be the top 10.

For me the clear number one would be Way Out West's Intensify though.

Not sure on favourite but having just listened to it earlier for the first time in years, LTJ Bukems Logical Progression has to be 100% up there somewhere for me.

If you aren’t familiar I highly recommend for some amazing atmospheric vibes.

It's been a while since I last heard music in an album format. In no particular order,

Clazziquai - Instant Pig [2004] (YT link to playlist). According to Discogs this is "future jazz." Think of it as really funky, jazzy house from a Korean electronic music group. Some of the lyrics are sung in English!

IU - Chat-shire [2015] (YT playlist). Chat-shire is what happens when you give a very talented kpop artist full artistic reign over her music. This coming-of-age album was a deviation from the typical commercial sound and instead feels more underground (though with enough appeal to be successful).

Natalia Lafourcade - Natalia Lafourcade [2003] (YT playlist). The debut album of now one of the most talented singer/songwriters from Mexico. According to Wikipedia, "Natalia Lafourcade" spans rock, latin pop, bossa nova, and acoustic. Some of the songs honestly feel like '90s house, and in general the album reeks of late '90s/early 2000s energy.

Can't really think of much else that I've heard recently, was in an album format, and stood out.
Trance-wise, I liked PvD's Seven Ways. It's been forever since I gave it a full listen.

Let me just give you my favourites, in no particular order. If I listened to it a lot, and if I appreciate something unique about it, it's here. I will omit some of the more recent amazing discoveries because I want to give it time to settle. Also, I am omitting albums by my favourite artists (like Airwave), because they feel more like a selection of tracks, rather than studio albums, regardless of whether or not it features some of my favourite tracks ever. So, even though I like a lot of the tracks on Airwave's Believe and I Want To Believe, I will not include it because I'm looking at an album, rather than the tracks. I'm also separating my favourites into standouts, so I'm not including my other favourites that might not be objectively as good, even though I love them. Hope it helps in understanding my criteria.

Anyways, the albums are:

VA - A State of Trance 2006 (Disc One - On the Beach, Mixed by Armin van Buuren)

If we're including compilations, this is clearly #1 for me and will never be topped. Incredible collection of tracks, mixed incredibly. Absolutely perfect in every way.

Eco - M(You)Sic (2011)

A masterpiece of an album. Every track is amazing, and even those I didn't like at first I love now. A proper journey, and one I love listening to over and over again.

Armin van Buuren - 76 (2003)

Sounds like it was made in a single studio session. The tracks sound very much alike, but at the same time they sound different. I don't know how to describe it, but I love it. And it's also the same with Eco's album, the tracks I didn't like I love now.

Junkie XL - Distance Between Dreams OST (2016)

Incredible, orgasm-inducing synthesizer heaven. Just amazing. Fell in love with it on first listen, and still love it now. I listened to it before I saw the documentary (of the same name), and I could just imagine the lovely scenery, with the ocean, waves etc.

Dousk - DIY (2005)

One of those that has a certain style to it, but manages to stay fresh throughout, and ends beautifully. It's sort of sweet, summery progressive house/trance and chillout. It doesn't evoke a lot of emotions (like M(You)Sic or 76 does) - well, apart from the final track - but it's just so good regardless. It's always a joy listening to it.

Including Your Loving Arms in a compilation is just a cheat-code, which instantly boosts its rating to a 8/10 at least. I'll never get tired of that track.

Just out of curiosity why Meteora instead of Hybrid Theory? Don't get me wrong I love all their albums just most people put Hybrid Theory as one of the best rock albums of all time.

It's honestly a coin toss between the two - at some weeks I like Hybrid Theory more, some weeks Meteora. For some reason I like the flow more on Meteora, but some of their absolutely best tracks are on Hybrid Theory. It might be odd creating a top 10 where one album can change from week to week, but that's just the case with these two albums.

What about you, got a top 10 lying around?

I totally get it. Hybrid Theory to me makes more sense as an album, but Meteora was very much an art piece, and you can tell just from the album art. I feel like Hybrid Theory is the more polished of the two, while Meteora is more raw and exposed.

But top ten albums...whoo boy. Um...that's so hard to quantify. Sometimes there are albums with really good tracks, combined with some not so good ones. Well, unabashed, some favorites are as follows.

LA Style's self titled album. (goes from goofy to absurdly serious at the end...sampling Richard Nixon? Also, James Brown is Dead is a classic)
Pandora's Box by Blue Stone (Instrumental, but in my opinion tells a crafty story purely through sounds)
Jesus Freak by DC Talk (I'm a sucker for story-telling albums, and this one I feel does.)
Storm the Gates of Hell by Demon Hunter (need some metal, yo)
Reprise by Vangelis (Gorgeous sounds)
Discovery by Daft Punk (technically not my most favorite, but it's too objectively good to be denied)
Another World by Paul Oakenfold (guilty pleasure, hate on me all you like for this one)

I don't know if I'm enough of an album person for this.

I get it Meteora was a good album, although they lost a lot of fans by that time, who just wanted metal/rock. I mean I can't even do a top 10 for the same reason as you I am not interested in albums for the most time. Though my life I followed just 2 artists/groups - Atb and Linkin Park, maybe a bit of Limp Bizkit. At best I can do a top 3 :)

  1. Hm Atb... Not sure which one... Either Distant Earth or Future Memories because I was going through a very rough time of my life and these albums kept me sane, definitely not as good as the his previous 10 years, but still amazing.
  2. Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
  3. Limp Bizkit - The chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavored water (I am surprised I got it right actually when I checked)
