So I was just reading along the "Has your music taste stopped evolving? Why/why not?" thread started by @dmgtz96 and @Katadunkass had an awesome comment which resonated with me, so I copied it on here and I figured I'd start another thread since it would be an awesome thing to talk about!

"A genre of music I could never live without are game and movie soundtracks. Some of my best memories with music are from various game and movie ost's and some of them still gives me the chills. Now, many of these are for nostalgic reasons no doubt, but holy hell, NieR 2's soundtrack, which I discovered this year, might be some of the best I've listened to in years. So, thankfully I still discover awesome new music there as well."

So what video game soundtracks and film scores have reached you? These are the ones that come to mind for me:

Trevor Rabin - Long Distance Goodbye/Landing (Armageddon Soundtrack, 1998)

Michael Salvatori - Never Forget (Halo 3 OST, 2007)

Moby - God Moving Over The Face of The Waters (Heat Soundtrack, 1995)

Ellie's acoustic cover of A-Ha - Take on Me (The Last Of Us 2 Soundtrack, 2020)

.

Junkie XL - Distance Between Dreams OST (from the documentary of the same name). Synth heaven, I think you'd really like it.

Also, there are a couple more, I really enjoyed Layer Cake's OST, but it was just a collection of already-existing tracks. Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth OST, Olafur Arnalds' Broadchurch (both parts) are incredible. OST from In Bruges was also pretty great. Also the OST from Das Boot.

But no OST matches the brilliance of the Howard Shore's LotR trilogy. I'll never listen to it on its own (because I'd really want to watch the movie!), but it's probably the best I've ever heard.

Secunda, from Skyrim's OST. Probably one of the best and most immersive tracks from the entire game:

Solaris Phase 2 from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) OST. The game was really bad, but the final boss theme is superb. It's an awesome orchestral/rock piece.

I actually don't know that many movie soundtracks/film scores, but I thought Travis Scott's song for Tenet was great:

If we extended to TV series OSTs, I could contribute more!

Here's a sample track that still gives me chills:

That Junkie XL score is sooooo sick!! Never heard of the documentary and I will watch it now. And I also never knew the complexity of Howard Shore's work on LotR themes. Incredible video which breaks it down quite well.

Glad you like it. I was amazed after that video, HS is a genius. (Damn. Gonna have to rewatch the trilogy now.)

For me still one of the best soundtracks ever:

You mother f*cker, you beat me to it, haha!
Seriously, this is, without a doubt, the single best soundtrack ever created. I have it on red vinyl and I play it at least once every two weeks.

The only thing that could ever match this one is LoTR - what a masterpiece of a soundtrack.

I'll share some tomorrow man!

Hans Zimmer - Gladiator OST
Brad Fiedel - Terminator Theme
Hans Zimmer - Interstellar OST
Alan Silvestri - Back to the future theme
Hans Zimmer - The Lion King OST
John Murphy - Sunshine OST
John Carpenter - The Thing

..my faves!!
All amazing ones! I think anything Hans Zimmer touches instantly turns into gold. I had the Lion King on repeat as a kid when it came out back in'94, lol. Never realized it was Hans who composed the film score, I was too caught up in all the Disney singing!

Hahaha. That was good, mate :)
Cool that you can call the red vinyl your own, the prices at discogs for this piece are insane.

I agree with LoTR! Another soundtrack, which you can listen to from time to time! But there are some more names that are very interesting. For example, back to the future was not on my screen anymore.

I actually think his best track is from one the very best war movies ever made, but no one talks about it; It's always either Interstellar or Inception.
I think this is his most emotional and best track:

You can spot his signature quite clearly, and hear some (a lot!) of Interstellar/Inception in it. Really nice work.

Especially those two and this one was made in 1998, so he took a lot of inspiration from that on. For Interstellar he definitely took a lot of inspiration from Koyaanisqatsi as well by Philip Glass (Superb soundtrack btw.)

Here's a couple from one of the brightest composers out there, who, unfortunately, died way too young a couple of years ago. His style was pretty unique and fit whatever movie he did absolutely perfect. His own album Orphée was spectacular and whenever he did a score it always had a bit of a horror and eerie vibe to it. Just listen to these two from Sicario and one from Arrival (Two of the best movies from the last decade).
This man managed to create tension with his music which no one seems to strive for today - it's always about making you cry or getting goosebumps instead of actually looking at the scene and create something which fits it 100%; And Jóhann Jóhannsson managed to do that every single time.

Now, non of these tracks seems spectacular if you haven't seen the movies (or at least the scenes), but the mixture of visuals and sounds just lifts it to the next level. I will say that, Heptapod B is a small masterpiece imo.
