Doesn't have to be strictly "trance". Just something you discovered that brought you closer to it in a way (though of course pure trance works as well). Would be useful to provide some context as well.

------

Here's mine. It was 2011, I was discovering tech house, some radio/Romanian vocal pop-house, and all of that moving away from Serbian pop/folk music and rap. Most of what I was listening to was either superficial or simple. But when I discovered this track, I fell in love with it instantly. It had sort of a "deeper" sound for me then, wasn't so simple and had some real emotion to it. It was sort of a switch from entertainment to passion with music.

Soon after, it was Armin van Buuren for me and that was it. ASOT 2012 is when I knew I found something I'll love.

Still rate it highly and it's been one of my favourites for years.

Deadmau5 - Clockwork

led me to Cygnus X - The Orange Theme (and thus the rest of trance)

In 1996 this was a pop hit from JX in the UK - i had it on a 'NOW' CD,which collected all the years top selling chart records. Listening back now and it still has a really great Trancy melody, especially in the 2nd part where it has a really uplifting chord change - i can point to this record now and say this is what got me into the Trance 'sound' - even though youd probably say this was Euro Dance.

I could also go back to the early 90's and my parents used to play Enigma's MCM album...id say now that was a big influence for me considering ambient/chilled/breaks music, which ive eventually gone on to produce.

Good shout with JX and the Hooj Choones. Id add Felix in their too. They both gave housey understones but it was music I would dance too (badly I may add). Even as much to say 2 unlimited , Snap! and Culture Beat.

Orbital, underworld, prodigy gave me the insights to electronic music, but the emotional side of what I liked in trance didn't come until Papuea New Guinea, with its rave/dub step hybrid. Then I found Bonsai.... Push and Airwave

Sweden
I cant put my finger on it. My memories are so vague....:/

I think it was Bomfunk Mcs that led me to this one below. I used to sit and wait and pray for it to be nr1 on the swedish charts but shockingly if i Remember correctly it entered at nr2 and stayed there and eventually just climbed down :(

I also heard prodigy (mentioned above) ,robert miles etc but not sure that was what got me into trance.

Oh shit yeahhh. Completely forgot this one, and yeah these kind of 'NOW' CD's were massive part of circulating all those club land bangers. Radio was so good back then

I heard Chicane Offshore on the radio in 1996, and then BT Flaming June on MTV in 1997 and those were my beginnings.
Heard Robert Miles Children too around the same time but not really counting that as that was more of a pop song.

Probably songs like

Dj José vs G-Spott - House Of Justice
Cygnus X - Superstring (Rank 1 Remix)
Sunclub - Splash
Klubbheads - hiphoppin
Barthezz - on the move
G-Spott - N-R-G
Milk Inc, Lasgo, Sylver, Ian van Dahl

In 2001 some trance got into the charts, like Rank 1 - Such is Life, and Svenson & Gielen - Twisted. Those were the gateway to trance. The video’s with lasers during Sensation and Trance Energy were very memorable for me.

But I also kept liking the commercial euro”trance”, and still do. Gigi d’Agostino, Safri Duo, Aquagen.

31st of december 2004, well actually past-midnight, they aired Tiesto in concert (2004) on tv. That was magikal.

I didnt only discover trancey music though, but also hands-up with artists like Cascada, Rob Mayth. Also really liked Groove Coverage. And Special D, Sven-R-G, Rocco vs Bass-T.

All this stuff is still nice for me. Probably nodtalgic factor...

Heres a funny story - i was in the car with my dad when Robert Miles - Children played on the radio (mustve just been released) and the bit after the breakdown its just the kick playing - i remember i asked my dad 'why is just a beat and nothing else?'

I mustve been about 13 years old - little did i know id be making the same kind of music years later haha!!

led me to this one below

I didn't know Darude had other songs that made it to radio.

Funny how back then as a 'Trance' artist you could not only afford a video, but also have luxury sports car AND a helicopter involved hehe.

Today the heights would be some generic artist like Aly & Fila paying a freelancer €20 to make a lyric video on top of €10 adobe stock footage of a beach.:p

Im born in the middle of the 80's and i had a radio with casette player in my room from very early age. I dont remember the name but there was a radiochannel with electronic music that i used to record songs that i liked on an empty cassette lol. At the age of 9 years in 1994 i bought my first music. It was a casette named Yabba Dabba Dance that was being promoted on tv during commercials.

Mostly it was eurodance/house like this:

Then 4-5 years later Tiesto came to Norway and he made the song Theme From Norefjell, it was quite popular here even on the radio and it was problably the first trance song i ever heard. After that it was all about trance for me.

All is began from Scooter. Early 2000's & Scooter tracks thats was on my old mobile phone (I don't remember how they appeared there). But from these tracks I was interesting in electronic music (and trance after some time). Also I want to note "Darude - Sandstorm", "Cosmic Gate - Exploration Of Space" tracks and "Tiesto - Adagio For Strings" of course. It was the first trance tracks I ever listened.

So 2006-2009 was the period when I was listening to trance (mostly thanks to "Elements Of Life" by Tiesto and his "Club Life" radioshow), drum & bass (Noisia, TeeBee, Spor, Pendulum etc.) & electro-house. Still listen to the first 2 genres, but I remember electro-house was very trendy back then, especially loved Dave Darrell & Klaas xD

Scotty - Pirates of the Caribbean (Dave Darell Remix)

Dave Darell - Freeloader (Club Mix)

Klaas - Feel the Love (Original Mix)

Guru Josh Project - Infinity 2008 (Klaas Remix)

Also I absolutely loved this 2008 tune :)

Ian Carey - Red Light (Original Mix)

Sounds so cheesy now, but these type of tracks led me to Cosmic Gate, back when they have finished producing hard trance but still didn't go into bigroom sound after 2010, who led me to other progressive trance stuff. Near 2009 I've completely forgotten about electro-house and went more into dubstep

Btw, when Tiesto's "Kaleidoscope" album was out I immediately bought the CD and disliked it, realizing that commercial music sucks and began to stay trancy & underground. 2010 was probably the year of Roger Shah's "Magic Island" progressive stuff for me.

This was also huge for me when I discovered it in 2011. Once I realized I actually love this sort of stuff, it turned me towards Armin's more accessible vocal stuff, and soon after, proper trance. Still love it.

It was a house compilation, 'Ibiza' something from the ministry of sound boyz. I know that's kind of lame. But it had some serious tracks too, this one from the Sultan and The Greek i am now forgetting. But it was Three Drives - Greece and also Take me Away that really got my attention. I don't know how that pushed me into the darker sounds but before I know I had many albums of hard trance, goa trance and chill-out house. These tracks introduced me to a new world not known in my country.

I went deep into the party mode later on the yeats, but only Psy available for me so that led me to more of this sound.
