Whoa, the Jan Johnston track caught me by surprise. I thought, "huh, this reminds me of Jan Johnston - Remember."

"Well as lovely as it is, I realised a lot of people don’t play trance because the records are eight minutes long, the breakdown is a minute-and-a-half and it’s 140bpm,” says McCartney, who started by experimenting with original trance records in his Ejeca sets, pitched down to the more appropriate speed. “Those types of dynamics don’t communicate so well with the crowd nowadays. Everyone wants a 30 second drop for Instagram, and people are too impatient for big breakdowns now too.”

'Everyone wants a 30 second drop to instagram and are too impatient'.... so why would you pander to that and continue that bullshit? Thats what radio edits are for, you can make beautiful tracks without having to worry about cutting down and then use some radio edits for the club. Personally I think people are still up for 7 minute tracks.

My thoughts exactly!

I agree and only on one thing - you don't need to pander to anyone or anything. This whole discussion about numbers (length, BPM) and stuff doesn't do much good in my opinion. It's always better to make better music, rather than getting 10-minute tracks that just do nothing. Let the music itself dictate that. I'm perfectly capable of equally enjoying a 4-minute and a 44-minute track. Just make it good.

That said, I don't know why I'm getting involved as I still haven't listened to the album. :D

@Gagi you are right, 4 minute or 8 minute, it doesnt matter ultimately, but give this a listen and you might agree with me that tracks end too abruptly and/or feel like they are lacking development.

He's also dropping this album in a time when clubs wont be open again for another 6 months or more maybe. It's the perfect time for tracks tailored for home-listening and not instagram culture.

Will take a listen for sure, and I definitely know what you mean even though I haven't listened. But an album isn't released in the year when it was produced, most of the times. It takes a couple of years, the last couple of months are just final touches, mastering, promoting and sitting on it until the release date. And the Insta culture is still there, albeit not streaming live from festivals.

Finally got around to listening to the entire album, and there's two sides to it.

Firstly, I think Bicep does this thing waaaaaaay better. I listened to this album, and then I listened to Bicep - Atlas. Even though this album is good, they are worlds apart IMO. I don't think I can put it into words, really, but I'll try. Even when you listen to Atlas, the emotions there are almost fleeting and elusive, you feel them but not fully, which makes them stronger because it forces you to search for them. Whereas with Trance Wax's work, it's all laid out in front of you. I kinda feel there's almost no subtlety.

But then again, the entire album was pleasant to listen to and not bad in any way (except for the aforementioned). Beachbreak is pretty good, and Calling For You would've been one of my 2020 TOTY, had I actually bothered to take a listen when it came out. What a great track!

I also don't mind the track length at all. Bicep's are the same. They are all filled with content, with no empty beats. No need to force more if it doesn't make sense. But then again, if the extended versions are better, I wouldn't mind.

I quite agree with this assessment overall:

I think this is a solid album - it is a fusion of several styles yet it flows quite naturally. It is fundamentally breaks but very melodic and condensed in its arrangement.

And i think it hits the sweet spot between being accessible for the mainstream crowd, whilst retaining enough musical substance for the more serious underground fans to relish. Ultimately what has to be compromised is the track length. There are some really promising ideas in there, and i could only imagine that they would be even better had they been fleshed out a bit more.

Looking forward to some of these tracks being released in an extended format!

I really dont see this as a trance album. More of a homage to the 90s.

He overdid the amen-break breakbeat tracks imo, and the arrangemnent/structue are too predictible/simple.
