If we go back to 1992, we are still at the very early stages of the trance timeline, technically still in the final phase of the proto-trance era (1990–1992). At this point, it’s hard to think of any trance hits that achieved mainstream attention or chart success, with the clear exception being the Jam & Spoon remix of The Age of Love. Landmark tracks, such as Cybertrance, Café Del Mar, or Scooter’s Cosmos, all appeared only in 1993.
However, from 1992, Transformation may be worth noting. While it features a clubbier, more mainstream and house-friendly foundation, dominated by a strong bassline and a female vocal that runs through nearly the entire track, the overall structure is decidedly trance, progressive, building, and quite euphoric. Since its release over 30 years ago, the track has appeared on 16 compilation CDs, and its emphasis on bass and vocals allows it to fit easily into modern mixes without any remixing. Alongside the Jam & Spoon remix of The Age of Love, it remains one of the most listened-to trance tracks of 1992, while it also likely served as an inspiration for later popular works, such as Country & Western’s Reincarnation, which appeared the following year.
