Got through Gaspar Noé - I remember watching Irreversible some time ago, but had to revisit it; What a hard fucking movie to get through, one of the toughest experiences I've had in recent time. It's not a movie I'm likely to ever watch again, but at the same time it's so incredibly interesting and fascinating to watch unfold. The backward-chronological order of telling the story was great and really brought sometime unique to it.

I also had to see Enter The Void and Love for the first time. Enter the Void is the better of the two, but what a trippy, weird movie where you really have to be in the right mood to get through it. It's again in a non-chronological order from different perspectives, following various characters, which does make it hard to follow at times, but the superb way of filming it, a wonderful score and trippy visuals makes up for it imo. Love is his weakest movie imo, well, next to Lux Æterna. It's not a bad movie and it's really visual with its sexual content, but the characters are all rather unlikeable (by design), but it does make it hard to get through.

My favourite movie of his is still Climax which is an all out, nut-slapping, hardcore experience which will take you on a ride through hell and.... well.... not back.

Next up is Michael Haneke, one of my all time favourite directors, but I still haven't seen a couple of his movies.

Dune

Absolutely adored it. Great storytelling, visuals, acting, don't get the complaints about the pacing - 2h30 flew by IMO. Hans Zimmer's score - so-so.

Watched It in IMAX and the theatre experience was excellent. You can go to cinema here only with certificate for vaccination and there were very few people mostly alone. 3D was totally unnecessary.

If you like sci-fi go watch it!

Dune (2021)

Just got out of watching it, not much to say about it that you haven’t already heard but I am just going to say I could not almost believe what I was experiencing, it was that amazing. Don’t remember feeling like that since Blade Runner 2049, maybe 1917?. But I think Dune blows them out of the water and it is just the beginning. I am still going to wait for a final rating as the story is not yet complete, but it is definitely an amazing start and a must-see symphony of spectacle, sound, story-telling and visual artistry.

Finally got around to watching Dune:

Going to write my final review when part 2 comes out, as the whole thing (IMO) will either stand and fall on that.

one thing I will say on part 1: Money very well spend.

My take on Dune

Felt the world was incredibly believable and interesting, thanks to the amazing visual shots and costume design, both grounded and alien, which is rare for feat for sci-fi which often goes too elaborate, cheesy or over-the-top grand. They introduced everything with a nice slow pace and it really draws you in. The designs for the city, the ships, the weapons, the houses....so, so good! The film has to set up a lot and it does it well (a little confusing sometimes). Wasn't it a bit too dark in some scenes though???

The acting is good, but not great, simply because the script is very safe and predictable, lacking personality. I did enjoy Paul's performance a lot. The story and how it's handled via the screenplay is very predictable, to the point of almost being boring, and i'm not talking about the pace (which is fine). The action scenes in particular are completely void of tension, rawness, emotion and momentum. Let's compare it to another epic, LOTR. In The Fellowship recall back to the iconic scenes of that movie; Frodo being chased by the wring wraiths, fighting them on the hill, dying from poison... the whole thing is filled with tension and momentum. Then we get the journey through the Mines, and those scenes, combined with the most amazing music, give you so much emotion, action, tension, rawness and screenplay that you have never witness before. The battle where Sean Bean dies... so much emotion. It's simply incredible. Dune doesn't come close to achieving such scenes, not once. For a more modern example, think of Game of Thrones action scenes...they were gripping, unique and tense. You cant use those words for Dune action scenes, with seen-it-all-before combat and action screenplay, it could be from any movie.

The music is also pretty suffocating and over-done at times. Fog horns have literally become a parody reference in modern cinema, yet here with have them in abundance. The animalistic tribal singing is fitting but after hearing it blast 30 times it looses its impact and nuance. I think it lacked the odd track that was memorable. Kind of predictable approach to the soundtrack as well actually....

A good start, but really the film by itself doesn't stand up on its own legs, or against the greats before it. I have promise for the films that follow, which will rely less on laying the foundation work of a complex world. 7.2/10

Watched this last night to get into the Halloween mood.
Firstly, the trailer is very misleading. It isn't a typical 'jumpscare-a-thon' but more of a slow paced, atmospheric horror.

It does a lot of things right, but ultimately it tries to do too much and it feels like the movie as a whole doesn't know exactly what it wants to be at times.
It feels like the writing/director team were making bits up as they went along and trying to Frankenstein the plot together as they went.
It also gets quite metaphysical at the end and goes in a direction that kind of makes a lot of the films earlier scenes redundant.

That said, I did enjoy it overall. There's some really great scenes and the story kept me invested (despite it's many inconsistencies)

The Pentagon Wars (1998)

Still as hilarious as I remember it. Makes a mockery out of the entire US Army's bureaucracy in so little time. Fantastic cast.

Everything Must Go (2010)

Really good, Will Ferrell's acting is phenomenal and really makes you feel his troubles. Got me kinda bummed out haha.

Haha watched it as well last night. A bit too messy and confusing at the end. Could fit in less running time also. Still worth a watch indeed.

Sicario (2015)

Still as amazing as it was the first, second...third time I watched it. Love those black ops movies. One of the best movies of the past 10-15 years for sure.

Fans of District 9 kinda scary I think I will skip this one. But people into horror movies might like it.
That looks pretty good actually. Neill Blomkamp knows how to make movies, so trusting him for this one.

The Bar/El Bar (2017)
Simple yet interesting premise. The whole movie is so intense without any single boring scene.
Will definitely check other films from the same director.

1917 (2019)

Wanted to watch a movie about WWI, this was relatively short and had a good rating (and All Quiet on the Western Front was taking a long time to download) so I chose this one. Remember it had mixed TranceFix reviews, so also wanted to see it for myself.

Loved it. I don't necessarily connect to the main character or his struggle, but I don't think that was even the desired effect. We don't see a war through the eyes of an innocent child (like in Come and See), or the chaotic massacre (like the first 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan), or even the absolute tragedy of war through personal stories (too many movies to count here)...

We just see the war around one guy, basically. The war is indifferent to him, he almost doesn't matter in it, so he is almost like an active observer. Almost every shot is from his eye level (or thereabouts), and we only see what he sees; we don't see huge pieces of land or scenery, almost always the immediate surroundings. Every gun shot is a surprise (certainly shocked me) and there aren't that many of them, there are marks of war everywhere - dead bodies, rats, destroyed houses, cities, mud, trenches...and we get to explore that as he goes on with his mission. We basically experience World War I, to a point. I almost felt like I was taken along the way, like I was the main character, witnessing war. Very personal experience too, especially with headphones in a dark room.

And then there's the way it was shot, the way scenes moved fluidly from one another, followed the main character as he navigated the war and the land. And, of course, the music. Not intrusive, dramatic only when it was warranted (and to great effect!), and quiet when it wasn't.

Of course, there are minor things that might have bothered me like the house-clearing tactics (I mean these guys weren't special forces), the uniforms are sometimes cleaner than they should be etc. But it's all minor, really.

Granted, this is not a Great Film, but as an experience, it was great. I didn't feel like I wanted more of a story. In fact, I didn't feel like I wanted more or less of anything else. It kind of breaks off from any formulas, too. To conclude (and repeat), loved it.

The Harder They Fall (2021)

Had to watch this due to Western being a top 3 favorite genre for me and I can say I had a good time. Liked some features of this film, especially the style and the soundtrack and how it felt in Synergy with the scenes, gave me a lot of Tarantino vibes, the music really carried the whole film imo. The casting also was fantastic with some great characters being portrayed, but all that being said, it was not a very unique and special storyline, I couldn’t quite connect with it and it was simply because this type of western revenge narrative has been told before and so much better. I felt the two protagonist needed more characterization for us to care more. It was an OK film with some aspects you could enjoy and have fun if you like westerns, but fell really short in storytelling. 6/10.

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)

It's been dubbed as one of the best movies ever made.

Realistically though, it's not even one of the best (anti-)war movies ever made, BUT...

The production, for its time, is incredible. Japanese 50s and 60s cinema barely got anywhere close to this. I'm not sure if the sound effects were updated, but those bombs sound scary (and I think very realistic). Watching more than a few movies about this very topic, the influence this has over them is huge. It's the fucking 30s guys!!! That alone adds sort of an authentic layer to it.

Now the reasons why I feel this is not one of the greatest ((anti-)war) movies ever made are quite simple.

I feel difficulty in connecting with the main character(s), I mean who are they? It feels quite undefined, like, is this a movie about a unit, a group of guys or one guy only? At times it feels like it's any one of the three, but in summation it's messy. Just like the story itself. It's just some scenes from their war, in chronological order, and we don't really know the time, the place, or the background...or even what's happening in the war. Just some trench. I can respect that being intended, but it's not really executed as well as it should have been. The horrors of the war are depicted as quite "simple" too, like a bit of bombs, some hunger, a couple of amputations and deaths, and that's it. It just feels unexplored in a lot of ways.

And then there's the language. In a movie about the German side, you can not have it in English. You need German actors, talking German. When they meet French women, the women talk French, which makes it all the more stupid.

The Alpinist

Docufilm about a mountain climber from Canada, who is basically the most talented and badass climber ever to exist..and only 23 years old!! He free solos some of the tallest and dangerous mountains on the planet with just his bare hands and ice picks. It's completely mind-blowing. His mentality is 1 in 100 million, maybe 1 in a billion. You should absolutely watch this movie and do no research about it before hand. You just cannot believe what you are watching. Even Alex Honold (Free Solo movie) classes this guy as 'crazy' (what?). @Gagi you will like.

The Last Duel (2021)

Really a shame that this movie is not being talked about enough and people did not care for it, to me this will probably end as a Top 10 this year. Amazing mounted by Ridley Scott in which he presents the main plot in three different perspectives with brilliant performances all throughout that kept me glued to my seat, especially during the duel itself. But what really stroked me was how well they portrayed the psychological aspect of the time period, what was a daily/regular thing for men fighting for codes of honor and their dignity, it was a bleak reality for women. 8/10.
