The Last Duel (2021)

Really a shame that this movie is not being talked about enough and people did not care for it, to me this will probably end as a Top 10 this year. Amazing mounted by Ridley Scott in which he presents the main plot in three different perspectives with brilliant performances all throughout that kept me glued to my seat, especially during the duel itself. But what really stroked me was how well they portrayed the psychological aspect of the time period, what was a daily/regular thing for men fighting for codes of honor and their dignity, it was a bleak reality for women. 8/10.
Saw this today, wanted to watch a movie and decided to go with this one.

Very much influenced by Rashomon. Overall, liked it. It was a nice movie. The acting was good and the story interesting enough to keep me glued to the screen. That said, I don't think it's really a memorable one, and yeah, it may be in top 10 of 2021, but what else is in there, really?

The Alpinist

Docufilm about a mountain climber from Canada, who is basically the most talented and badass climber ever to exist..and only 23 years old!! He free solos some of the tallest and dangerous mountains on the planet with just his bare hands and ice picks. It's completely mind-blowing. His mentality is 1 in 100 million, maybe 1 in a billion. You should absolutely watch this movie and do no research about it before hand. You just cannot believe what you are watching. Even Alex Honold (Free Solo movie) classes this guy as 'crazy' (what?). @Gagi you will like.

8.7/10

Will see it yeah, but I'm not one for extreme sports (or I've never given them a proper chance - now's a good time though!). I only love the Himalayas and mountains in general.

Definitely not much, some of the most anticipated films of this year are releasing this month due to the whole “Oscar Campaign” thing. Today we got Power of the Dog on Netflix, will check it out. But yeah, in terms of “Released solely in 2021” there is not much really and TLD should easily be a top 10 or top 5, maybe.

Mortal Combat (2021)

Quite surprised this managed to keep me entertained. The fight sequences were done really well. The story and dialogue obviously lacked depth and was very simple which is kind of expected when it's a game to film. It's also less cheesy than I expected.

Overall a dumb but fun movie which I enjoyed. Definatley helped by the 15 rating as the blood was in full flow.

I watched Dune part one yesterday in IMAX. The movie was really fantastic. I've always been a dune fan having watched the the original movie, a fan edit of the movie, the sci fi channel directors cut of DUNE and I own the DUNE original trilogy. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt it was too short. The pacing was really great and all the major stuff was in there, but a lot of little stuff wasn't, so hopefully one day we can see a directors cut. I also wished it was rated R so we could get more realistic deaths with blood from stab wounds and such.

Also watched The Last Duel amongst other; It was fine, the actual was pretty good, especially by Jodie Comer. My main problem with movies having a structure like this one is that I never feel like I actually get an attachment to any of them. All of them were rather bland and unforgettable except for Comer's portrayal of Marguerite. The overall settings were great and costume design as well. 6/10

Also watched Finch - again, a fine movie with a strong performance, as always, by Tom Hanks, but nothing really stood out for me. Only recommended if there's nothing else on imo. 5/10

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:
What can I say, another Marvel movie. Except for a couple fun action scenes it was bland, generic and completely forgettable. Still, I think some of the actors did a fine job and it had a couple of cool settings. 6/10

Été 85 -
There are much stronger movies out there trying to say the same things about love, life and what-not. For some reason it constantly felt like a lesser version of Call Me By Your Name. 5/10

Venom: Let There Be Carnage
- Just.... no 3/10

Tick, Tick, Boom
- perhaps Andrew Garfields strongest performance yet. What a fantastic role for him with lots of dept, incredible singing skills and a fun background story (not all true, though) of one of the best play-writers out there who died way to young. Definitely recommended! 7/10

Red Notice -
Well, it's Ryan Reynolds playing Ryan Reynolds with The Rock playing The Rock and Wonder Woman looking hot in a red dress. Nothing more. 4/10

Nitram -
Fantastic movie about one of the deadliest shootings in Australian history which made them change their gun-law. How much of it is true I have no idea, but the movie is focused on the young man who did the shooting, who he was before it all happened and how fucked up everything was around him. Not an easy watch, but definitely recommended. 7/10

Spencer -
Whoever says Kristen Stewart is a bad actress just because they only know her from "that vampire movie!" should definitely watch this one as it will make them shut up for good. What a fantastic performance by Stewart who have been working with lesser known directors recently, playing more body-type rolls with lots of nuance; Just like Robert Pattinson. Spencer is almost like a dark fairy tale about Diana's mental issues before her unfortunate death. One of the best movies of the year. 8/10

Petite Maman -
From the director of one of my favourite movies this century, Portrait de la jeune fille en feu by Céline Sciamma, this is like a childrens fairy tale about loss and how to cope with those feelings. It's a short movie, only 1 hour and 12 minutes or so and what really stood out were the performances by the real life twins Joséphine and Gabrielle Sanz - really great job from both of them considering their young age. 7/10

Last Night In Soho
- Well.... it's.... new, I guess. I really can't tell if I like it or not.Thomasin McKenzie is fantastic in it and it's definitely her movie, but at times it felt so messy and all over the place, yet it still had me interested in where it was going with everything. When it did, though, it didn't feel that great of an ending. Still, I had somewhat fun watching it. 6/10

Nine Days -
One of my favourite movies so far this year about a reclusive man who interviews human souls for a chance to be born somewhere on Earth. Winston Duke is fucking phenomenal in this movie and so is Zazie Beets. It's a small movie with no action, but lots of strong performances, a great, fitting soundtrack and with lots of various themes about life and if everything's worth anything in the end. I haven't watched After Life (1998), but I've read it's much similar to that movie, so I definitely have to watch that one as well. 8/10

I watched the new Wes Anderson movie, The French Dispatch. I'm a fan of his style and this film has bucket loads of it, but oddly assembled in the form of 3 short films tied together with some intro, mid points and outro's. It has humorous and poignant moments and a lot of character. A all-star cast when you check the bill, but most are very short appearances. It was charming story telling but too boring when all said and done.

After tackling Frank Herbert’s speculative classic Dune, Denis Villeneuve is set to direct an adaption of another sci-fi story from genre staple Arthur C. Clarke.

Villeneuve will helm Rendezvous With Rama for Alcon Entertainment, which worked with the director on the Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Prisoners and Blade Runner: 2049. Along with Alcon co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary will produce via their Revelations Entertainment banner, with Freeman having previously held the rights to the 1973 novel.

The story from Clarke, the writer behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, follows a group of human space explorers who are tasked with intercepting an alien starship that is hurtling through the solar system. It is believed that the missions will lead to mankind’s first contact with alien intelligence.

“This is one of the most intelligent works of fiction in the genre; it poses as many questions as it does answers, and is a work for our time,” said Johnson and Kosove. “It’s perfectly fitted to our friend and collaborator Denis’ brilliant sensibilities and specifically to his love and passion for science fiction. We are also pleased to work with Morgan and Lori, who have a long-standing passion for this IP.” Alcon will finance the project.

This movie looks absolutely insane, can't wait

Looks great, but I'm afraid it will be over the top. Loving the director, so got high hopes for it. Still am a little sceptic about it. Perhaps all those a-list actors are a bit too much? We'll see.

The director is one of the best working today, but definitely; Having a lot of a-list actors can quickly spiral out of control. I don't think many of them will have that much screentime though. Fingers crossed for a shit ton of crazy Dafoe, though!

I watched the new matrix...

I have so much love for the first and even the 2nd and 3rd kinda of at least had a direction and purpose.

This new one, some of the art is lovely but the story is just a cash in Hollywood movie. They plaster over the omitted actors from the first 3 (who obviously didn't want to do it or read the script and thought, no) needed to be acknowledged but it didn't work for me. Trinity flying as well had me laughing.

Anyone else seen it?

Haven't seen it yet, but I guess it's because of Marvel fanboyism and young people not being able to give anything other than 10 or 1
as someone who's totally onboard with that statement.

Spiderman: No Way Home is a genuinly good movie.

Best movie of the year for me was definitely Dune (except i'm sad there is no directors cut...yet). Followed by No time to die. Halloween kills directors cut is also good. I love the Matrix trilogy but Matrix resurrections was awful. It was a lousy, unnecessary movie that is better left forgotten about.

Honorable mentions: The justice league snyder cut, the green knight the last duel.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

I saw this film days ago and was completely blown away by the visuals more than anything. I think everyone that is a fan of Shakespeare must watch this. It gets really confusing sometimes and it is easy to get lost during the dialog, but I watched it with subtitles and also the film itself got really interesting and I was able to follow along the plot just fine. The whole film is a work of art, practically every scene is stunning. Denzel and McDormand killed it. Denzel could win the Academy, but I think it’s Will’s time. Anyways, if you liked The Lighthouse, you will probably like it as well. 9.5/10.

Brendan Gleeson in it - I'm convinced.
