What other music do you listen to (if anything) out with Trance?

Just wondered what other sounds you guys are into old and new really?

For me, out with Trance, I enjoy quite a lot of current Techno and am a sucker for almost anything with an acid line or with ‘old skool rave’ type vibes to it.

Gary Burrows is my main man there for now, releasing quite often on Spektre’s (another duo I enjoy) label Respekt Recordings.

I still spin older sounds from the likes of The Prodigy, Altern 8, Praga Khan etc too, but also love me some full on 90’s Eurodance cheddar.

2 Unlimited, Culture Beat, Snap, Cappella, Sash!, Haddaway....I have no shame.

Still dig out a lot of early - mid 90’s Hardcore too (mainly alcohol fuelled nostalgia trips lol).

Away from Dance music, I just love the 80’s era in general and will happily blast out those massive power/rock ballads as well as the sappier love stuff.

That 80’s snare drum was a thing of beauty 😄

Anyhow, that’s covered me and ruined any street cred I had (if any), what about yourselves?

I honestly don't think there's a genre I don't listen to; I care more about artists and the feeling of the track/album rather than the genre. I enjoy everything from Fleetwood Mac to Astronoid to The War On Drugs, Nils Frahm, Perturbator, Linkin Park and everything electronics (almost)

There are of course artists I follow more than others; Each time a new The War On Drugs single or album gets released I drop everything in my hands. The same goes for Perturbator and The National. I was raised with electronic music (mostly because I'm a 90's child), so pretty much every big hit from the late 90's and early 2000's had an impact on me; genre didn't matter.

Now again, there are genres I don't often listen to, but that doesn't mean I'm ruling it out; If you had asked me 5 years ago I most likely would have said hardcore metal/rock, but now I've found a couple of bands I really enjoy in that genre as well.

My go to genre for the most part is electronics (rather broad I know), but it can honestly be anything in that spectrum.

Judging from the latest playlists I've made (or tried to make):

House, more specifically the kind that tries to replicate the '90s vibe. Like this one.
D&B, generally liquid but also a good amount of neurofunk
Kpop, primarily from 2008 through 2015 with a few later releases
Trap. Used to be a lot into the phonk sound, but recently started getting into more commercial, chilled-out trap.

Same as Kata. Although I usually listen to maybe a dozen different genres, I'm not afraid of exploring anything further - if it's good music, and if I like it, I'll discover more from that genre. But mostly it's hip-hop, electronic music (house, techno, prog, ambient, synthwave etc.) and (neo)classical, film music and sometimes post-rock. And within those genres exist a lot of its different eras, phases, styles, sub-genres etc. - just like with trance - and I explore them as well.

I really love to dig deep into the various electronic music genres.

My 2nd favourite genre would be drum and bass, especially neurofunk. I know that it completely differs from trance, but that's the thing I like, the broken rhythms of dirty and deep neurostuff like Fre4knc, Noisia, Gydra, Alix Perez, Hybris and many more. Some of my favourites here, here, and here.

I also absolutely love downtempo and psychill, my 2 favourite subgenres of chillout/lounge music. Carbon Based Lifeforms I consider as my GODS. Also AstroPilot, Solar Fields, Aes Dana, Asura and many more.

Can't miss techno as well. During the last few years I've attended quite a lot of techno parties, and underground techno is probably my favourite now. Tunes like this, this or even the fast & hammering like this might be not emotional at all and far from trance but they just keep me dancing and energized :D

During the last few years I'm discovering synthwave and I really love it. Especially after I've seen Perturbator live at this festival in Poland. I think synthwave will be bigger, especially with the release of Cyberpunk 2077 game.

I also enjoy listening to atmospheric breaks and a relatively new style of electronic music called future garage.

Despite the electronic music sometimes I like to listen to neoclassical music, like Olafur Arnalds, Max Richter, Vangelis, Nils Frahm, Johann Johannsson (R.I.P.), Ludovico Einaudi (overhyped but still good) etc....

Sometimes I even listen to rock and jazz but that's pretty rare xD

I can't tell you how many times I've headbanged to this set - Perturbator was at 180% at that festival, it's amazing to witness!

Jazz is a fantastic genre and so is everything noir imo.

I listen to a lot of different music outside Trance, so won't go into detail about each genre.

However, for example, I really love 90s (especially eurodance) and 80s music in general. I think music in these two decades had the most infectious grooves and rhythms which is something I miss the most in modern mainstream music.

I feel like I love almost every genre, and in a big way too. All genres have gems to be discovered within them, that is fact. Trance is always my number 1, but I have strong passion for many other genres as well. Here they are...

Electronic

House - The only genre to never let me down and keep making good music over and over, in all its many forms. Great to party to and actually I found myself listening to more house-styles than Trance as the years have gone on. Its the perfect go-to genre, it can capture every mood you need, from chill to party.

Psybient/Psychill - Incredible spiritual feeling music, blending of every genre imaginable in the form of psychedelic. I meditate and sleep to it regularly and when I want to think deeply about stuff it is amazing music. The most creative and expressive I would say out of all electronic genres.

Trip-Hop/Nu-jazz/Downtempo - Best music to chill, relax, smoke with. All my most played tracks in my Itunes are Trip-hop i think. Its the Influences of jazz, reggae, hip-hop, soul all coming together with an electronic twist, and that is fucking wonderful. I listen to this stuff daily.

Drum & Bass - Must have been to nearly 50 DnB raves from age 17 to 24. Possibly most enjoyable genre to rave to. UK was the best place on earth for DnB at one point. I used to enjoy all the sub-genres but now I only listen to old 90's Atmospheric and Jungle now, as well as 00's Hits, Neurofunk and Tech. Liquid has become a cheese fest and I abandoned it sharpish, same as Jump-up which I stopped enjoying when I grew up and stopped necking pills every weekend.

Psytrance - I remember going to massive psy festival Boom 2012 and all of a sudden I realised how fucking awesome this genre is. I don't listen to huge amounts at home but my god in the forest with all the visuals, craziness, energy...it's the best festival music around in my opinion.

Breakbeat - This genre deserves a special mention because any of the above genres incorporate breaks then I am in love i.e Ambient-Trance-Breakbeat, Downtempo breaks, Psybient with subtle breaks, Jungle (aka hardcore breakbeat). Actual breakbeat genres like UK break acts Stanton Warriors and Prodigy are big for me too.

Dub Techno - I enjoy Techno but only listen to the regular/banging stuff at parties and thats always pretty good. But at home its strictly dub/atmospheric stuff.

Non Electronic

Rock Music (1970 - 2010) - My first rock CD was Jimi Hendrix Experience as a young lad and since then I never looked back. Been to countless gigs from all sub-genres of rock and never grow tired of it. I truly love everything from this genre; Heavy/Death Metal, Grunge, Blues, Alternative 90's/00's rock, Chill-rock. Red hot Chilli Peppers are my favourite rock band of all time I think, followed close second by Incubus and Audioslave. I dont listen to any new stuff, just revisit the amazing albums of the past.

Hip-Hop - One of the few genres that leaves me speechless with the talent and authenticity, 1988 - 2005 is the only years worth listening although sometimes I can allow a pinch of modern, but honestly 95% modern hip-hop is a disgrace.

Reggae & Soul/Reggae fusion - One of the best genres ever for putting you in a good mood. Love Bob Marley as cliche as it is, but also most reggae classics from 70's, 80's and bit of 90's. There's probably about 10 artists I go to regularly and also the fusion stuff i.e Fat Freddy's Drop is special to me. New Zealand style is big for me from 90's to 2010.
