My approach to this has been to just save and invest (mostly invest) as much as possible. I’ve saved and invested enough money that I can take a year off to re-train for a blue collar physical job. If I get laid off from my engineering job, I would like to get into automotive repair and collision repair for Teslas/electric vehicles, since there are so many of them in the US and a lot of traditional mechanics don’t like working on them. There’s a very clear gap, in my opinion.Another round of huge layoffs in IT has already started, from Meta to other companies.
On a personal level, it's happening just as I was planning to buy a home, which would stretch my finances severely, having to take a big loan and empty my savings totally. I am one or two weeks away from signing a contract.
Unsure of how the industry will look like in the future and what it holds for us. They used to say, study so you don't have to work a physical job - now those are more in demand and often paid better. Go figure.
It's been a year since I got laid off and still searching for a new job. My biggest regret was relying too much on my day job, where I could have taken freelance opportunities, invested, or started a small business a long time ago. Having at least 2 sources of income seems like (or should be) the new default in this situation.Another round of huge layoffs in IT has already started, from Meta to other companies.

Unfortunately, the capital/investment market is not the same as in the US. Here, you either buy something that you think will appreciate in value (land, real estate, gold etc), or you save it in a bank. Everything else is not that accessible (or you have to trust apps and portals from who knows where). Besides, I'm very much far behind in that game.My approach to this has been to just save and invest (mostly invest) as much as possible. Thanks, man. I also worked at an ecom company, led their UX Writing/Content Design team. The role might be more common in EU and US, but still a niche here in SE Asia, even more so for senior positions.Oh man, feel sorry for you. What was your line of work? Are you able to find a source of income now?
My main fear is exactly that, since I also know some people who are in the same position. A friend of mine quit out of principle in July, still looking for a job. Not a lot of opportunities in a niche market (ecom development) - knowledge is hard to find, but so are the projects. In outsourcing, all you're doing is trusting your bosses to find you work.
I did have a 2nd job, so to say, via some contacts in the US. However they have also run into some issues a while ago so it sort of just stopped.
Some of my friends have some land, or family businesses (like carpentry) to fall back on. Not that lucky unfortunately. Freelancing - will have to explore that, but given my limited domain of expertise, it will be difficult to find work.
@dmgtz96 Dude, take a risk sometimes take it from someone who has played it safe and got screwed because I was afraid of taking risk or getting slapped.2 words:

20,000 people getting sacked is crazy. Both Meta and Microsoft are brainless zombies and double faces assholes.Another round of huge layoffs in IT has already started, from Meta to other companies.

Good luck buddy, hope things settle a bit for ya. My trick to handle market swings like that has been to diversify my income streams. So job, yes, but always have a (1man) company on the side, some small passive income streams, and in my case a partner who does the same (company + job).Another round of huge layoffs in IT has already started, from Meta to other companies.
