Yes but President Pedo is the only one who has threatened to destroy an entire civilisation in one night.

..and 2 days later we have a cease fire..

Never threat-mollycoddle a stubborn enemy in the middle of a conflict.

especially if it’s a regime build on respecting authority and strength.

I did end up talking to the Japanese cutie I mentioned (and posted on the babes thread), but tbh I became much more interested in someone else

anyways, I think that’s the end of my Japanese idols phase. Looking forward to whatever is next!

Promo from the last single:

We had a nice convo. Mostly talked to her about my trip, how I became a fan of her group, and that she became my favorite after meeting the rest of the members

2 words:

waifu material.
Except that she’s real and you can talk to her lol and she’s fluent in English

in her group, there’s a couple opportunities every year where you can buy tickets to talk to the members (it’s every time a single is being promoted). I talked to a bunch of them, but many don’t speak English

I’ll probably see her again next single online, then in person the next time I’m in Japan

Another round of huge layoffs in IT has already started, from Meta to other companies.

On a personal level, it's happening just as I was planning to buy a home, which would stretch my finances severely, having to take a big loan and empty my savings totally. I am one or two weeks away from signing a contract.

Unsure of how the industry will look like in the future and what it holds for us. They used to say, study so you don't have to work a physical job - now those are more in demand and often paid better. Go figure.

My approach to this has been to just save and invest (mostly invest) as much as possible. I’ve saved and invested enough money that I can take a year off to re-train for a blue collar physical job. If I get laid off from my engineering job, I would like to get into automotive repair and collision repair for Teslas/electric vehicles, since there are so many of them in the US and a lot of traditional mechanics don’t like working on them. There’s a very clear gap, in my opinion.

It's been a year since I got laid off and still searching for a new job. My biggest regret was relying too much on my day job, where I could have taken freelance opportunities, invested, or started a small business a long time ago. Having at least 2 sources of income seems like (or should be) the new default in this situation.

Unfortunately, the capital/investment market is not the same as in the US. Here, you either buy something that you think will appreciate in value (land, real estate, gold etc), or you save it in a bank. Everything else is not that accessible (or you have to trust apps and portals from who knows where). Besides, I'm very much far behind in that game.

Good for you though! Good thinking ahead. I have enough savings to not work for a few years, but if I invest in an apartment, that's gone forever.

Oh man, feel sorry for you. What was your line of work? Are you able to find a source of income now?

My main fear is exactly that, since I also know some people who are in the same position. A friend of mine quit out of principle in July, still looking for a job. Not a lot of opportunities in a niche market (ecom development) - knowledge is hard to find, but so are the projects. In outsourcing, all you're doing is trusting your bosses to find you work.

I did have a 2nd job, so to say, via some contacts in the US. However they have also run into some issues a while ago so it sort of just stopped.

Some of my friends have some land, or family businesses (like carpentry) to fall back on. Not that lucky unfortunately. Freelancing - will have to explore that, but given my limited domain of expertise, it will be difficult to find work.

Thanks, man. I also worked at an ecom company, led their UX Writing/Content Design team. The role might be more common in EU and US, but still a niche here in SE Asia, even more so for senior positions.

Luckily, I'm quite frugal and the severance package was fair enough, so I have a long runway ahead.

I'm treating this unemployment period as a career break, while starting my freelancing journey. It's progressing, even though very slowly. But this year seems going to be better (hopefully). I'm currently in the process of securing a deal with long term potential.

Anyway, I thought IT and software engineering were still in high demand? I saw a lot of openings on remote job portals. Industry knowledge isn't mandatory, is it? Because some engineers I've worked with have moved from ecom to OTA, ride hailing, and fintech.

20,000 people getting sacked is crazy. Both Meta and Microsoft are brainless zombies and double faces assholes.

Good luck buddy, hope things settle a bit for ya. My trick to handle market swings like that has been to diversify my income streams. So job, yes, but always have a (1man) company on the side, some small passive income streams, and in my case a partner who does the same (company + job).

It’s impossible to get absolute certainty in any financial endeavour, but you can spread the risks

my 2 cents
