Sounds like someone is going to get very little sleep within the next few days.Have to get something off my chest.
Been stressed out for weeks now. Don't have time to relax, unwind or even meditate, still have tons of shit to do and only 2 days to do it. If I don't, I have to pay the 'client' (a girl who can't pass a course) back, but I need that money for a new laptop because the one I have is utter crap - which increases my stress tenfold because it's so slow that I can't work fast at all. Oh, and the project I'm doing, I'm doing work for more than 2 students, instead of just one. My head hurts every time I have to wrap my head around the entire specification.
It's just overwhelming, and all of those days, even hours, when I didn't work as hard have come back to haunt me. On top of that, this wasn't the only deadline this month - I had another project to deliver past Saturday (which I did), and a Machine Learning project proposal due tonight. And there's just a small breather after this, I ain't done yet.
Sometimes, in times of such stress, I ask myself, am I really that weak? What happens when I get a job and it's like this all the time? Will I even succeed? I always thought I was capable of achieving much more - and was told so by many people - but am I? That's what's killing me the most. Well, apart from the fucking laptop.
Sleep, what's that? Is that a requirement in the project specification?Sounds like someone is going to get very little sleep within the next few days.
All I can say is that your work environment will depend a lot on your company. I am not familiar with working environments in Serbia specifically, but my impression of ML is that it can be hectic if you're at a start-up or a small company (& you're basically the in-house ML go-to person). On the other hand, if you do something more like software development/software engineering at a large company, chances are that you will have a good work-life balance. You can find out those things while interviewing and by reading Glassdoor reviews.
I had those same fears starting work, too, if I'd be a good enough (chemical) engineer. It turns out that at a large company there's a lot of downtime, and I've had days where I basically just chilled/read documentation while waiting for training to happen (b/c I don't know enough to contribute to larger-scale, pressing projects or don't have access to a specific company system).
Damn. But when I think about it, whenever it was hairy like this, I managed to succeed. I know how, just need time and a bit of luck. This project is not about ML, it's a store (pharmacy+) website, with a lot of different users and entities. It's just huge and packed with must-have functionalities, which makes it a pain in the ass to make.
Haha, right now I'm just like this because I can only do small-scale things on my own right now. I'm hoping to get more responsibilities within the next few weeks.I'm jealous of your job, my dream was to do nothing, get more and more money and be at some higher levels of hierarchy, among the decision-makers.
Also, did not know about Glassdoor, love the website!
Lol, I still listen to Tiesto's Club Life Vol 1 every now and then.it's like going through my electronic dance music journey throughout the first few questionable years full of trouse, sledgehammer uplifting and Armin.
Wait, so has she already paid you?The solutions, as it seems to me, if she fails, are:
a) do the entire thing again (but much better and much more) for the next September, ask for payment then, with better control and oversight over my project (which means I'll have to work again on an already tight schedule, but it's more right), and
b) say goodbye, try to keep the money I've gotten in advance (and be somewhat of an asshole)
Half in advance, and I was supposed to receive the other half when she passed.Wait, so has she already paid you?
It's incredible, discovering music I've downloaded from even 2010 (transferred from my old PC), it's like going through my electronic dance music journey throughout the first few questionable years full of trouse, sledgehammer uplifting and Armin.
What happens when I get a job and it's like this all the time?
Best of luck!!@Hensmon that's good to know. Gonna work on getting better at everything until I get a job.
I've done a month of internship, no interview though! They just called me and said we start soon. I'm not that scared about getting a job, but I am worried about the job itself.Best of luck!!
Have you interviewed for jobs/internships yet? Are you familiar with the recruiting timeline for those positions?
I don't know what it's like in Serbia, but in the US my classmates in computer science were among the first people to get jobs from the entire class. Although we all graduated in May, they started applying as far back as August/September and interviewed throughout the Fall semester. By ~December some people in that major had jobs lined up.
If you're graduating this May, it's probably no big deal - just keep applying and keep getting better at interviewing. It's a learned skill, and in my opinion it just takes practice and repetition. Took me a while until I finally left an interview thinking "damn, that went well."
One interview question you might run into is "Tell me about a time when you needed to prioritize multiple tasks" (or the related, "Tell me about a time when you worked on multiple tasks. How did you manage your time and prioritize?"). I think your recent experience dealing with all those software projects, including the one for your classmate, could make for an interesting answer for that question.
(... just don't mention that the project was for someone else, hahaha)
