Yeah i've seen the vid, and kudos to the NYT for actually putting out a piece like this in this current media climate.@jetflag this is right up your alley.
The part where Palo Alto residents voted to get rid of the proposed high-density residential complex for the elderly almost made my blood boil:
Its no shock to me honestly. When I was in Nevada/California 2 years back i've seen it up close The big, 4 fireplace and a private pool mansions with 2 diesel SUV's and sign that said "safe the planet" and "help the poor immigrants" Its the thing that honestly annoys me most about progressive neo-liberals like those we're currently seeing in the US dems or the Dutch VVD etc.
Its not the candidates, Its not the direction/policies, some of which I agree with, its not the "pandering to the crowd" part and empty, unrealistic promises.
its the Hypocrisy. The not putting your money where your mouth is part. The "we need to help the poor and disenfranchises but not in my garden and need less people on the planet for the climate but not me and my family" bit.
Now fair, every party and politician and spectrum has some degree of hypocrisy or some sort of dual standard their whielding, often just for sheer pragmatism. but when you compare level of Dual Standard, this particular subset of often very wealthy pretenders stick out head & shoulders.
