Im not sure what youre getting so worked up about - yeah i dont agree with some DJ doing a generic set somewhere - but if an artist wants to go out to their favourite secluded spot and play their own tracks, which means something to them at that place, then it shows a bit of individuality imo.
I'm not, I just find it cringy and to a degree laughable and am wondering if others feel the same way. To me this is the edm trance equilvalent of duck faced selfies on instagram, and those are also a form of individuality and self expression if you really want to...

I never argued against their free choide to do whatever the hell they want music wise. They are as far as i'm concerned completely free to in a manner of speaking, swing their private parts around on camera with a prerecorded set on autoplay 😅 hell, pure production wise i'm quite the sunny lax fanboy for example..

What I'm saying is I find it rather narcistic, creatively flatlined, mindless trendhopping and genuinly don't understand the appeal behind this novelty. 🤷‍♂️

again, what is creative about this? where's the artistic appeal/ quality. the pattern they choose the drone to fly maybe?

But if amount of effort an artist is perceived to be putting in is the deciding factor or what is or isn't good, then that feel thats a bit silly. We spend money to go see DJ's play, it's the same effort. Boiler room has been very successful on Youtube, the only difference is that people dance around them, it's the same effort for the DJ just with people.
It's not just the effort, though, but also creativity. Adding on to what @Hoplite and @Peenuts mentioned, authenticity is also a big factor.

My frustration is that It feels like style over substance has become the ethos of modern music. So much money in marketing, promo shots, shows with the best lasers and visuals, HQ drone footage, extravagant locations, stylised music videos...I would sacrifice all of it for a single incredible uplifting track. I watch Anjuna channel and sometimes I feel like they are having to compensate for how average things have got with all this flashy stuff. But they are trying to run a business and YT revenue might even make them more than track sales, so can we blame them?
I can see where you're coming from. In Tchami's case, he is great at what he does. His set can stand alone without the video and drone footage. I would argue he has both style and substance (but then again I'm a fan of his deep house sound).

I have nothing against these outdoor sets. Most of time I'm just listening without watching the video.

I thought it was Cercle who popularized this trend, and they succeed getting millions of views on YT. But their goal is clear, as stated on the description: to showcase cultural heritage & landmarks through electronic music & video. Of course they could have done it differently and do something more creative with it. But the current format seems works for them.

What others did in my opinion, is just trying to repeat Cercle's success.

I think it's a sign of our times. The trend caught on when half the planet was in lock-down. It gathered enough views back then, so others started doing the same thing. And it will fade away when the views start going down.

It can be quite cringy - I've seen Thrillseekers a couple of times and even if his sets are great, the videos are not.
I think the famous producers and DJs were set to have viewers from the start. Among the more unknown ones, the female DJs are gathering most of the views. Somehow they can make it seem a bit less awkward.

I would rather see the occasional vague silhouette of the DJ amongst all the lasers and smoke, than watch someone posing and gyrating behind two laptops and a mixer somewhere idyllic, in some sort of safe-for-work Chaturbate session that swaps out tits & bedrooms for tunes and castles.

I can understand the pandemic giving DJs the nudge to try something new. I enjoy the sets that have visualisations synced to the music, because that is more of a trance thing. It's good to whack these sets on the TV in a dark room and trip out whilst huffing the wife's incense and supping on Horlicks.

The whole DJ'ing to the camera idea takes away from the music making its impact. Some of it is the viewer's choice of watching a man with a logo on his shirt with three cameras and a drone on him, rather than going clubbing or slipping on some headphones, resting your eyes and letting a mix take over.

It's an instant turn-off when I see people perfecting their twinkly arms & fingers, miming along to vocal tracks, and eyeballing the camera. You're in it for the followers, not for the feeling. On the plus side, it's a vanity filter for modern trance music that helps me skip even more of the shit that gets released today. Not only do the template tracks and the steroid tunes get skipped and the producers names remembered, but the sets played by vain DJs compensating for lack of actual trance feels also get skipped and blocked. Just like with this sickly motherfucker.

Haha! Ive got to say that is pretty vanity based - is he even live mixing? looks like a pre recorded set and hes just adjusting the EQ.

As i said my level of acceptance would be a place special to them, and if they are playing their own productions...makes it have a meaning more. But yeah, most of it is about DJs just posing and fishing for comments. I do loads of producer sets, but never feel the need to show myself.

Regarding your question - it's the typical case of seeing it for the first time and thinking it's interesting, but after 25 other people do the same it gets kind of generic. Overall, it's almost like every other video set broadcast - just with a different background. Absolutely not interested.

* this.
On an occasional basis I find it nice. Some sets and locations are pretty cool. But now that almost all DJs do it, it's just getting boring and meaningless.

Jesus, I thought the 2 laptops and a mixer was a piss-take, then I clicked the video...
The Beats headphones, the pretentious shirt and the "twinkly fingers" make it even worse

An early heads-up for anyone wanting to catch this performance by the son of the Monopoly Man on Saturday. I'm curious to see how many people he's trying to get to jump along with him. When he bounces backwards like so, I like to imagine Jim McDonald walking down from Parliament Buildings in his army fatigues, taking the safety catch off of his loaded M60.

Well, something has to power all that equipment out in the wilderness, plus transport there and back. It doesn't seem very environmentally friendly when you could achieve 95% the same effect back in your house.
Hadn't even considered that. Good point.

Honestly makes me wonder now that you've mentioned that, if there's actually one of those "charity for global warming esq" sets out there that follow a similar format. 😅

This is how you do it. Truly spectacular location combined with real instrumental talent and performance.

Guetta did it on top of the 7 star hotel. What it cost to purchase he probably gets within 30 minutes.
