30 years ago, one of the most legendary electronic compilations was released - „Northern Exposure” from Sasha and John Digweed. This year, together with LateNightTales, they present Redux edition :)

A new version of „Dark and Long (Dark Train) was made by Darren Emerson, a co-creator of original track from Underworld :)

This Autumn the lauded dance music legends Sasha and Digweed revisit, rework and expand their seminal progressive-dub-trance-breaks odyssey, Northern Exposure. This three disc set will finally debut on streaming platforms, alongside deluxe edition CD and vinyl editions and a Deluxe Box Set, with brand new art, packaging and extensive sleeve-notes.

The original version of Northern Exposure was released in 1996, as a putative successor to their hit compilation, The Mix Collection, which was the first gold certified mix released in the UK, and sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. “There was quite a lot of pressure to live up to that,” recalls Sasha. "But we didn’t want to just deliver a Saturday night peak-time album. We wanted to capture the whole environment – the atmosphere that’s around the dancefloor, around our peak sets, what goes on after hours, and what goes on before.”

The pair had slowly been building a following in the US, and whilst, most notably in Orlando, they gained exposure to a burgeoning American breakbeat scene. “After the “Mix collection”, we thought, we’ve got to do something completely different with this – and the introduction of all those breaks, we knew no-one would be expecting that,” comments Digweed. “Disc 1 would not have sounded like that if it wasn’t for the fact that we’d been playing in Florida, where those breaks were massive. Someone over there gave us the Young American Primitive album, and records by the Rabbit in the Moon, the Hallucination, and Hardkiss stuff, which had a big impact because it wasn’t just breakbeat, it was the atmosphere that went with it”.

Very much a product of now, for the newly added Disc 3, Sasha and Digweed utilised modern technology adding their own magic touch. The duo have created something new, somewhere between ambient reworks and dubs, where tracks pulse weightlessly, focussing on melody, mood and otherworldly sound design. “We rebuilt and reshaped the material using modern tools. But we embraced the character and beautiful imperfections of the original pieces of music. We tried to refocus it through a modern lens, drawing inspiration from reinterpretations by dub artists like Bill Laswell and Mad Professor. It feels like we discovered a forgotten version that was hiding behind the beats.”

In summary then, this is a classic, timeless snapshot of a time and place. “There’s something about the atmosphere of this album that really is wonderful. And it also shows the birth of a sound that’s turned into this behemoth of a music scene. It’s become this gigantic sound around the world. And some of the music that we put onto this album was the beginnings of it all. Sonically it stands up, too. The fact that 30 years later, it’s getting re-released is mental - and great!”

Purchased the 12's instantly on announcement, missed out on the signed ones but got North and South blue vinyl. Got the CD too. I have the original CD and x4 vinyl and have tracked down most of the tracks on vinyl that aren't on the original x4 set. But...... ones I was missing were 'Satellite Serenade' 'The gloom' and 'Dusk' and 'Phoenix' so I was absolutely F'ing stoked with these new vinyl releases.

The original CD was formative for me and then was the basis for the crew I got in with at uni who introduced me to proper progressive house and trance.

What's with the remastering of Dark and Long? My ears feels like they are drowning and being pierced by shitty percussions and poorly chosen samples synths ugh

My ears can't breathe in this new version fucking terible.

Well........... this CD arrived today. Hmmmmm
Some of these sound great, for example the Xylem Flow mix of 'Water from a vine leaf' mixdown is lovely and improves on the original, but some have had the magic ripped away. Some are also over-compressed (surprise surprise) and you can hear the dynamics banging off the limiter. Disappointing; I expected more from S&D : (
'Wavespeech' sounds far too clean and has no backbone anymore; the percs are pretty thin and poorly chosen and the iconic vox samples are set too far back. It sounds like stem separation has been used then new percs added in place of the old, and it doesn't work for me. What shits me the most is the meaty pitch snare FX right before the first kick hits isn't quantized correctly, its off time, as are the delays on the top frequencies of the bassline. Fucking ruined. If I didn't have the original 12" of the Junior Vasquez mix and dub I'd be magnificently pissed off when the new Redux 12" arrives with this version on. The vocal on 'Kites' sounds like someone else is singing it now, and she has asthma. Many of the others are respectful and well done cleaned up mixdowns - why not just do that with them all?
The Dub mix I need to go back to, as it was really washed out and reverb heavy in many places.
On the positives, the tunes I am very much looking forward to on the Redux North and South 12"s (being the ones I don't already have as they are too $) are are all ok so far (I'm half way through CD 2). I'm standing by to be on the 'nope' side of the fence when Emerson's version of Dark & Long comes in : (
Why fuck with that???

To be honest (and I realize this is one of my biggest blunders with electronic music), I don't think I ever listened to Northern Exposure. The tracklist is stellar though, and it just shot up to the absolute top of my TODO list.

Plus, it contains the best trance track ever!

I was also hoping that the 2026 remake of Dark and Long (Dark Train) would resemble the version they were playing live in recent sets, with the vocal addition (can be heard at 8:14 in the video below).
