Late onto this one. As someone who grew up watching Star Trek I wasn't sure what to expect. For me the movie begins brilliantly but sadly it seems the peak for me. Perhaps it was the early bout of nostalgia but the movie unwinds quickly into an incoherent mess. Cliches and nods to the past interjecting and forcing plot moments & character introductions which not only are untimely but jarring.
The film is shot well and some of the performances are stellar but the script and writing take chunks out of the movie. It tries to balance too much and becomes compromised in the process. As much as I loved the places of old I felt like this was a stage setter rather than a credible piece of the Star Trek universe. A sacrificial goat one may say for new adventures to come.
I'll watch Into Darkness before long I am sure, we'll see what comes of it. Saying that though I've been pretty damning, some may say unfair but I do understand it's intended role. The best is yet to come from the cast and the films. It has it's merits and in that respect I'll issue a 6.5-7/10.
