Its a tough question, but I think having the labels is very important for nurturing artists and getting the most out of them. They will then often drive promotion through available marketing resources/connections and also create more abstract benefits as they build relationships between fans and artists, almost bridging the gap between them. I mentioned before about Hooj tunes being an example of this, which worked wonders for them back in the day and still gives them a cult respect to this day.

So I'd say that its not the ideal situation that promotes good music but the ideal environments. Although it looks like free music could be the future, to me its benefits don't come close to outweighing the benefits a label does for artists and fans, so it would be a shame if they would be lost because of it.
