A bit slow but decent sci fi movie. Would be better without those motivational dialogue.

Probably one of the few who actually liked this one a lot! Very atmospheric. Plot wise it's not the best, but definitely not the worst [like Interstellar]. Loving the mystery and scenery. Not for everyone I guess. And wow that soundtrack. Max Richter <3

Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood (2019)

I quite liked it! As usual, a fun, gripping Tarantino movie. He's, of course, had better, but that doesn't make this one bad. I enjoyed it a lot. Well worth the 2,5 hours.

Incredible, dark, mystery, haunting. Loved "The Witch" from the same director. Pattinson and Dafoe both nailed it. One of the best movies this year. Not for everyone!

    Joker (2019)

Didn't do anything to me. At all. No emotional response to it whatsoever.

First off, it's because what am I gonna compare it to than to The Dark Knight? If this is indeed the "Joker Begins" story, it is hard to make parallels between Joker here and Joker in The Dark Knight. If it's not, what's the point then? Joker works best as a perfect antagonist to Batman, as we've seen in TDK.

As far as I can figure it out, Joker as a character has been used as a tool to criticize society, to explore moral dilemmas, as a character study and whatnot. Now that should've been ok with me, but it hasn't been quite pulled off. First of all, you only have Joker and what he stands for, and the increasing unrest among the poor mob. The 'other side' is Thomas Wayne and the host Murray Franklin, both of whom are represented as rich jerks careless and oblivious of the struggles of the lower class. So there's no conflict between good and evil - the lines are blurred and there's just a lot of malevolence towards the 'order'. If you're gonna address serious social issues and do it right, represent both sides of the argument. Doing just one side (and especially one argument) is too easy and very cheap.

As a character study, it's still a bit somehow lacking. The guy is mentally ill/crazy and outcast, but even his sad (back)story produces absolutely no sympathy (or emotion overall) from me. There's no pity, there's no disgust, there's no awe, no understanding...it's just nothing. The script is all over the place and often times goes nowhere, and the character development suffers as a result. It also feels like it's trying too hard to catch on to its target audience, which I feel consists of mostly resentful people.

When it comes to philosophy, psychology and ideas, it's also devoid of any real substance - a hint of things here and there, but ultimately not much of anything. I'd rather have a lot, or nothing at all. Teasing and hoping it sticks is cheap.

It reminds me of Taxi Driver, and even though I didn't like that movie at all, I have to say that in its niche, it's still better.

All that said, Phoenix's performance is pretty damn good (even though I dislike the main character, though that's barely his fault), and the movie is at least watchable and not as bad as I might've put it. It's still a surprise in the whole superhero world, and a proof you can succeed by making movies about characters, rather than putting all superheroes in one movie and making them fight each other or whatever.

It's just that it's simply hugely overrated. IMDb's rating of 8.7/10 is abnormally high, even for that website's standards. I'd go as high as 7/10, just out of good will. Realistically, it's more of a 6/10 for me.

Black Christmas (2019) I know a lot of people hated it and fair play if you do but I had a lot of fun with it, not as terrible as people made it out to be. Last 30 minutes were absurd but I loved the last act and how pure crazy it was. I certainly enjoyed it more then the new Star Wars film.

Add to this, Fighting With My Family (2019) on Netflix. True story of Norwich born female wrestler who makes it into WWE. On paper not my jam but really caught me by surprise, bloody excellent!

I liked it as well! Definitely think Brad Pitt has had a pretty good year with this one and Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood.

Can't wait for The Lighthouse which unfortunately won't premiere in Denmark before early next year. But, the movie I'm most looking forward to is actually Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - so much up my alley!

That and Tenet of course. Nolan = GOD HIMSELF

Can't answer that myself. I'm just "catching up" on some classics and some relatively newer stuff - not many movies from this year. Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood was the only one I watched and really liked, so maybe that's the answer - but it isn't a good one.

    South Wind (2018)

A Serbian crime/thriller/mafia movie. I'm amazed by how far we've come in terms of production quality here. I wouldn't even bat an eye if someone told me it was a Hollywood movie. It's that well done.

In terms of the script etc, it all seems quite fine to me. It's gripping, has a nice plot, has a lot of great actors (legends, in fact, one of whom have unfortunately died before the movie was even premiered). I guess I could find something to criticize, but I won't, as I was really positively surprised by it.
