Agree that they should be a bit longer, from both listeners AND DJ's perspective. I don't DJ for anybody besides myself, but still, I like my transitions slower. I'm also a BIG fan of good intros in tracks. And yes it is about content, but I personally love longer ones. Quite possibly all my favourites are longer than 9 minutes. Arisen - 11:something, Ladyblue - 10, When Things Go Wrong (remix) - almost 10, and there's the exception of Tonight Is Forever (Martin Roth Edit) which is 8:18 if I'm not mistaken. And that one is a great example of fitting awesomeness in as little as 8 minutes. Short even works, though. Just listen to Ferry Corsten - Sweet Sorrow (The Thrillseekers Remix). LSG - Netherworld anyone? They are only 7 minutes (which is an OK length), but nothing short of greatness. Just proves it's all about the content.

Progressive tracks should be longer, but energetic uplifters like the remix I just mentioned, and tech-trance don't need 10 minutes to make their mark. You can't really generalize with that although I just did, not all tracks are the same.

If labels are demanding shorter tracks, especially the big ones so that Armin can fit 2335345357 tracks in 2 hours of ASOT, it's just the part of the bigger picture: Making business out of art. And the side-effect isn't just having shorter tracks.

There is the original netherworld which is a lil over 11 mins.

The thing is with longer tracks, it lets the listener and producer 'explore' more of the track. When you are listening to a track song, you are going through a journey, personally I'd take a long and beautiful journey over a short, yet beautiful one.

Doesn't it all depend? Why must it be a one-way-over-another-thing ?

Cos you cant have a proper journey under 7 minutes - unless you want each element to come in every 10 seconds.

A musical journey isn't equivalent to song lenght. Thats ridiculous. To press on about trance needs to be 10-11 min to be a journey feels like real trance snobbery. Very cliche imo. With that said I don't support tracks under 6.30-7.00 min, if its not a special case. Its all relative anyways. Music is about content.

I havnt mentioned 10+ minute tracks - only certain producers can pull that off, like Laurent with the Planisphere stuff.
